Comments and reviews on this website suggest that people should AVOID the following companies with  in front of their names, although this list is not all-inclusive. AVOID this company with MC #521897. It has complaints all over the Internet, including on RipoffReport.com and here - http://americanvanlineseast.com/Home_Page.html A sales rep who posts on MovingScam.com told a moderator in a Private Message that one of her customers had been victimized by this company on an interstate move--he had been waiting for his items for more than a month. As of 8/08 American Van Lines East has 9 complaints on www.protectyourmove.gov, including one for Hostage Load (serious red flag): http://ai.volpe.dot.gov/hhg/SearchDetai ... d=30976223

In 6/07 "debyac" posted a favorable report for a move from IL to FL that was booked by Nobel Van Lines with Sasha Transport as the hauler:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14128 (interstate)
However, Sasha's record is so bad that Nobel's use of Sasha throws its own quality into question.

Consider calling the Florida Movers and Warehousemen's Association in Tallahassee (850-222-6000) for recommendations. They were helpful to someone - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7625

In June 2006 the FMWA gave someone the names of the following five companies as good ones to consider in the Miami area:
1. Bekins of South Florida
2. AA Varco agent for Allied
3. AAA Gold Coast Moving & Storage in Sunrise, FL
4. Griffin Moving and Storage
5. K & S Moving and Storage
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 2306#62306

In March 2006 the FMWA pointed someone to Daniel Moving Systems (Atlas) in Miami:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7625

Also, for intrastate (within FL) moves, Tim Walker posted that people can contact the Florida Division of Consumer Services about any mover they're considering, and also keep its phone numbers handy in case of problems during the move. The phone numbers for the Consumer Services Hotline are 1-800-435-7352 (1-800-HELP-FLA - Florida only), 1-800-352-9832 (Spanish), and 1-850-488-2221 (out of Florida). See http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/onestop/cs/move.html

In addition, Florida has a No Fraud Hotline for reporting improper conduct by movers, such as holding cargo hostage until higher fees are paid: 1-866-9-NO-SCAM. Consumers can also contact the Division of Consumer Services at www.800helpfla.com/moving.html to file a formal complaint.

NORTHEAST COAST (Jacksonville area)

Allied Van Lines agents

--Vision Moving Systems (Allied) in Jacksonville.
No reviews but good comments by "PMueller," who was at that time a sales rep for another Allied agent. As of 11/8/10 this company had one complaint with the BBB over the last 36 months, however this company had a "D-" rating for failure to respond to this complaint.

Atlas Van Lines agents

--Reads Moving Systems of Florida, Inc. (Atlas) in Jacksonville.
The company won a quality award from the van line (Milton Hill Award) in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Among other things, this means that it had a "customer satisfaction" score of at least 4.10 out of 5. As of 11/3/10 this company had no complaints and an "A" rating with the BBB in the past 36 months.
"lisainflorida" moving to CO posted in 6/07 that she liked the estimator (Donn) but he seemed somewhat less thorough than the Suddath rep:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13889

Graebel service centers

--Graebel Jacksonville.
No reviews but good comments by "PMueller," who was at that time a sales rep for an Allied agent. As of 12/07 this company had no complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. As of 11/3/10 the BBB reported that "The BBB has information indicating it is out of business."

Stevens Van Lines agents

--Baymeadows Moving and Storage (Stevens) in Jacksonville.
This company has the website www.baymeadowsmovers.com and the phone 877-849-0064 or 904-737-3530. Note that it is not the same as Old Baymeadows Moving & Storage with website www.wemovejax.com, an independent company also located in Jacksonville. As of 11/83/10 this company had an "A+" rating with the BBB and 0 complaints in the past 36 months.
Researching a move to Memphis, "wfay" posted that the Baymeadows sales rep seemed less professional than those from two other companies,--Hill's Van Service (Mayflower) and Beltmann (North American)--and he ultimately decided to drive a rental van:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 3586#13586
On the other hand, on the same thread "jambulingam" posted that he used the company for an in-state move from Jacksonville to Tampa and they did a good job:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 2970#52970 (move within FL)

--White Lion Van Lines, Inc. (independent) in Boca Raton.
There was an "alert" for this company, which had MC #298528. See these threads for why:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=945
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3663
As of 01/26/2011, this company was purchased and is under new ownership. Currently (as of 3/20/12), this company has 1 BBB complaint over the last 14 months (since it started). The company's new location is 1900 NW 1st court, Boca Raton Fl 33432, with phone number 800-944-8354. It's new DOT# is 2148696 and has MC# 748923. The company has recently become a Steven’s Van Lines agent and seems to be in the process of rebuilding the company image from the previous ownership. We currently have no reviews since the new ownership took over. They received their household goods license on 10/06/2011. According to Judy Butler of Steven’s Van Lines, the reason White Lion was accepted as an agent, was due to the good industry reputation of the new owner.

United Van Lines agents

--Sentry International/Suddath (United) in Jacksonville.
Sentry is the international division of Suddath (United), which is HQd in Jacksonville. As of 11/3/10 this company had a "B-" rating with the BBB and 2 complaints in the last 36 months (resolved). The BBB explanation for this rating -- "BBB does not have sufficient information to determine how long this business has been operating"
"paulj" gave it a rave review in 10/08 for his move from Orlando to Australia, singling out Chris J., Mike R., and Tara B. for special praise:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17411 (forwarder for international shipment; Suddath Orlando was the booking and packing agent)

--Suddath (United) in Jacksonville.
Industry people have made excellent comments about Suddath as a whole, and Jacksonville is the company HQ. The phone number of this office is 904-256-5540 or 800-333-8100. As of 11/3/10 it had an "A+" BBB rating with 4 complaints in the past 36 months (0 in the past 12 months), all resolved. The General Manager at this location is listed as Mark Chesser.
"ArchieWhite" (owns a Mayflower/United agency in Atlanta) posted in 5/07, "I've known the President of Suddath for a few years, and the President before him for about 20, they will do you a fine, professional job, you can't do any better." - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 8752#88752
In 10/08, he and another industry person spoke very highly of the recently retired president of Suddath (United), Quinn Bell: http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 143#116143
"lisainflorida" moving to CO posted in 6/07 that she was poised to go with Suddath even though its quote was Nonbinding (because she had a storage unit) and a little higher than the one from Reads because the estimator (Frank) was very thorough and inspired confidence:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13889
"paulj" posted an excellent review of Suddath's international division (Sentry International, located in Jacksonville) in 8/08 for handling his shipment to Australia--"I have the highest praise for this company . . . They are always contactable, friendly and helpful and also provided the most comprehensive written quote out of the 4 or 5 companies that I contacted at the start.":
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 823#115823 (forwarder for international shipment; Suddath Orlando was the booking and packing agent)

http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 753#105753

Atlas Van Lines agents

"Rick" (industry expert) posted in 5/08 that it used to be a Mayflower agent. "JMillerFL" (his family owns a National Van Lines agency in Orlando) posted in 3/08 that A-1's Andy Newitt, a former president of the FMWA, is "a good guy and runs a good company.":
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 516#104516
We have couple of good reports on moves with this company:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3524 (interstate)
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5731 (local)
There is one more good report about an interstate move, but the poster complained in 12/05 that A-1's driver failed to pay him for furniture he sold to the driver and the company did nothing about it:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6839 (interstate)
"esager" moving to San Francisco reported in 3/08 that his move booked by A-1 and hauled by an Atlas Van Lines driver went very well:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 515#104515 (booking agent on interstate move)

Independent moving companies

--Crystal Coast Moving & Storage (independent) in Riviera Beach.
The phone number for this company is 561-863-8343 and the owner is Dan Harvey. When I spoke with him in 12/07 he told me that 85% of his work is moving furniture for interior designers. Crystal Coast is a small, family-run company that has been in business for 25 years. As of 11/3/10 it had an “A” rating at the BBB with 1 complaint in the past 36 months.
We have a good report:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6481 (several within-state moves)
"friedman29" posted an excellent review of a local move with Crystal Coast in 8/06, saying that the price was reasonable and the service was professional and friendly:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9908 (local)
"Arthur" was unhappy with Crystal Coast for a local move in 12/07, saying that a worker accidentally broke a glass lampshade. However, the owner compensated him with $30, much more than his legal liability since the customer had not paid for extra coverage beyond 60 cents/pound. People also pointed out that the owner held to a fixed price of $600 and didn't charge for packing materials although the move went hours beyond the estimate:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15252 (local)

Auto transporters

--Ron Bailey Auto Broker, Inc. in West Palm Beach.
This company with phone 800-637-6969 or 561-686-3001 has MC #183424. As of 12/07 it had a “C+” rating at the BBB with 2 complaints in the past 36 months. As of 11/3/10 this rating had dropped to an "F" based on 2 complaints that had no response from the company. Judging from www.safersys.org, it may have some of its own trucks as well. However, in 11/06 another auto transporter told a MovingScam moderator that Ron Bailey no longer hauls POVs (Privately Owned Vehicles). She asked why and the answer was, "They probably got tired of customers' bitching."
We have one good report:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4474 (move from CA to FL)

"Big Dog" (FL mover) said that they performed well for him in terms of supplying workers:

On that same thread, someone posted that a friend had used them for an interstate move to CO and was pleased.

--AA Varco Moving & Storage (Allied) in Pompano Beach.
This company has excellent quality scores from the van line. A person who works for another Allied agent ("PMueller") posted that the owner, Joe Varco, is a quality driver who left the agency he was with to start his own company several years ago. As of 11/8/10 this company had an “A+” rating with the BBB with 4 complaints in the past 36 months. We have no reviews as yet but people have been pleased with the estimate process. http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16985 (origin agent for interstate move)
"r.tennison" (driver for NAVL) chimed in on the same thread to say that in his opinion, Griffin is a shining star in FL--he had never had a bad estimate from them.

This company has the website www.danielmovingsystems.com and is HQd in Atlanta. As of 11/8/10 this company had an “A+” rating with the BBB with 1 complaint in the past 36 months.
For a move within FL, the FL movers' association recommended it to "TanKatLuvr," who posted that the contact person at Daniel, Raul, was very nice:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7625
"miamisunshine" was going to use it for a company-paid move to Dallas and said Daniel was going to have a very good company in Dallas serve as the destination agent, but she never came back to report:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4572
"mseeler" posted an excellent review of a move to Atlanta--"my contact was Raul . . . an absolute pleasure to work with, and the movers were a delight. The move took 3 days, they arrived on time each visit. Not a penny more was charged. Everything arrived safely. I can't express how charming and nice the movers were."
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 3802#83802 (interstate)

--LaMar Transfer (dba Morales Moving and Storage)(Atlas) in Miami.
Good comments about an interstate move in a private message to one of the MovingScam moderators from "Newlyblond" in 11/05 - "I had [a] great experience . . . when I moved up here [to Long Island] from Florida 6 years ago! For the record, the company I used was called LaMar Transfer (out of Miami) and they are still in business. If you see any posts from anyone moving from the Miami area, I'll be happy to correspond with them about LaMar."

In 12/10, "lovemyboat" posted that her move from Ft. Lauderdale to Tampa with Sunset went well and that she was very impressed with Sunset's informative explanations about moving at www.sunsetmovers.com/blog/moving-company-quote-types/- http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19823 (intrastate)

http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5721 (move within FL)
"Kent G." posted that Bekins gave him his lowest quote (by far) for a large move to northern CA but he went with Broadway Express:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1458#61458

http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1888#71888

--Omega Shipping (FL.), Inc. (Mayflower) in Miami.
Comments on this website suggest that people should AVOID this company. See the listing for Omega Shipping under "New Jersey - Northern Area" for why. This office of Omega has the website www.omegashipping.com and the phone 305-888-0337 or 800-239-3190. Someone posted in 6/08 that its owner is the brother of the Omega (Mayflower) company in Secaucus, NJ (formerly located in NYC) and the two companies operate under the same Mayflower licensing authority:

This company has the phone numbers 561-395-4444‎, 561-734-4531‎, and 954-426-0088‎. It has a bad review on citysearch for an apparently local move saying that not many of its workers speak English - http://national.citysearch.com/review/2617448/2320622
As of 11/8/10 this company had a "B" Rating with the BBB and 11 complaints over the last 36 months.

North American Van Lines agents

--Beltmann Group (North American) in Pompano Beach/Fort Lauderdale.
As of 11/8/10 this company had an “A+“ rating at the BBB with 4 complaints in the past 36 months. A couple of drivers made bad comments about this branch on a drivers' message board in 1/07 - one called it "a joke":
http://householddrivers.com/PHP-Nuke/mo ... opic&t=391

--J & B Movers & Storage (North American) in Pompano Beach and Deerfield Beach.
In 11/06 a MovingScam moderator was told that J & B was in receivership. As of 11/8/10 this company had an “A+” rating at the BBB with 0 complaints in the past 36 months.
They told "ecolman" that he might not qualify for their minimum (NAVL had a 1000 pound minimum at the time) when in fact he had 2200 pounds, which "East Coast Mover" (NAVL driver) found strange:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8067

Paul Arpin Van Lines agents

--Joe's Moving and Storage (Paul Arpin) in Miami.
This company has a website of www.joesmoving.com and a phone number of 305-888-3963. They were given 2 awards in 2003 - “Superior Customer Service” and “Lowest Claims” by Paul Arpin Van Lines. As of 11/8/10 this company had an “A+” rating with the BBB with no complaints in the past 36 months.
There is one good review by "FrustratedMover" (Gabriella) for a move within FL:

Stevens Worldwide agents

--Cousins USA (Stevens) in Fort Lauderdale.
This company has the website www.cousinsusa.com where it is listed as located in Lauderhill, and the phone 1-888-300-6683. As of 11/8/10 this company had an "A+" rating with the BBB and 6 complaints over the last 36 months.
An industry expert posted in 6/08 that the owners, cousins Clem and Joe Pollio, "operate a smaller, well managed agency [and] have one of Stevens' highest "use again" quality scores from past customers. Most of their trucks stay east of the Mississippi.":
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 106#112106
He repeated his praise of the company in 10/09:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18712
In 9/09, "birojac" posted very favorable remarks about the Cousins estimator and added that a friend had used the company three times with excellent results:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 501#126501
He updated his review in 10/09 to say that his move from FL to Chicago went very well--the cost was $4200 for approximately 5000 pounds and the three men who picked up his shipment were the ones who delivered it:

United Van Lines agents

--Armstrong Relocation (United) in Pompano Beach.
Armstrong is a huge and well-respected agency for United. As of 11/8/10 this company had an “A+” rating at the BBB with 0 complaints in the past 36 months.
This branch gave "gobrons" a Nonbinding quote for a move to CA and then raised the price 10% to make it a Binding quote (not a BNTE, which would have been more desirable). Not illegal but "gobrons" noted that an Armstrong rep in Chicago did the same thing when he moved to FL:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8187 (interstate)
"cpc25" gave Armstrong a very good review for a move to CA in 2/07, praising the move coordinator (Heather) and saying that the company president, Steve Brown, was helpful. I have also heard from a competitor that Steve is a very good person:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12586 (interstate)

:alert:--Johnny's Moving & Storage (United) in Hollywood.
BE CAUTIOUS about using this company. Moderators deleted three posts by the company praising itself. As of 11/8/10 the BBB reported "This business has no rating because BBB has information indicating it is out of business".
"David N" moving from Seattle warned aga.inst Johnny's, which delivered his shipment when a United long-haul truck broke down. "Their workers were very crude, talking and joking about women with me just standing there, thinking I’d participate apparently. . . . they scuffed my couch and nearly broke my dresser.":
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8255 (interstate)
"gobrons" got a quote from Johnny's for a move to CA and it came in higher than Armstrong's or Suddath's, but he said that the estimator was professional:

--K & S Moving Systems (United) in Ft. Lauderdale.
This company has the website http://www.movingsystems.com/kands/ and the phone 954-835-0069 or 800-426-1919. As of 11/8/10 it had an "A" rating with the BBB and 1 complaint in the past 36 months.
Praised by "joesgarage39" (retired driver) in 4/08:

--Suddath (United) in Ft. Lauderdale (actually Deerfield Beach) and Miami.
A VERY GOOD PERFORMER with at least 5 good reviews and no significant bad reviews as an origin agent on this website. (These two offices are located so close to each other that they are being considered as a unit for MovingScam's rating purposes.)
As of 10/10 the Deerfield Beach location had an "A+" BBB rating with 4 complaints over the past 36 months (all resolved or administratively closed). Its General Manager is Julie Cobb and its phone number is 954-596-4000 or 800-999-5466. Also as of 10/10 the Miami location had an “A+” BBB rating with 2 complaints (either resolved or administratively closed) in the past 36 months. Its General Manager is John Trevathan and its phone number is 305-885-8161 or 800-327-9351.
An industry expert posted in 2005 that "management holds positions on both the United Van Lines and AMSA Board of Directors. The general manager of the Deerfield Beach office has held the office for more than 15 years. They are a good company." - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 2146#42146 He added later that Suddath-Miami purchased Withers Van Lines back in 1984.
MovingScam has many good reviews of interstate moves booked by these two branches.

http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8187 (interstate - an excellent report by "gobrons" praising Vicky in the office, the driver, good communication, and a fast 7-day delivery to San Diego)
"natinstl" gave Suddath a very good review for a move to Seattle, praising Vicki in the office and the Mayflower driver from Ohio, Art Brown:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9457 (interstate)
There is a vague complaint by "KGUMM" about a move to CO, but without more information it's hard to say what really happened and this complaint should probably be disregarded, especially since it's not certain that he is talking about this branch of Suddath (he posted from Arizona):
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 3948#43948 (interstate)
Someone posted an excellent review of a move to CA in 12/06 praising especially the sales rep Tony de la Torre and the punctuality and efficiency of the Miami packing crew--Raul, Jose, and Jimmy:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10744 (interstate)
"gatorinmn" posted a rave review of the Ft. Lauderdale office of Suddath for a move to MN that took place in 9/06--there was a tiny amount of damage which the company took care of right away. The customer adds, "I work for the federal courts, and I was pleased to learn that the Fort Lauderdale federal courthouse uses Suddath when items need to get moved from chambers to chambers within the building (or when judges move from the courthouse in WPB to the one in FTL or MIA, or vice versa). I figured they've gotta be good if the court uses them.":

"cancan42" (real name Carol) reported in 11/07 that a United Van Lines driver (Tom N.) apparently screwed up the weight tickets on her move to TN. A Suddath-Ft. Lauderdale employee initially declined to intervene but when its General Manager Julie Cobb heard about the situation, she made everything right and the customer ended up satisfied:

Independent moving companies

--Coral Springs Moving (independent) in Coral Springs.
AVOID this company. As of 12/07 this company had a “B” rating at the BBB with 21 complaints in the past 36 months – which is too many. As of 11/8/10 this had improved to an "A+" rating with the BBB and 5 complaints over the past 36 months
The manager, Bob Murphy, is nice, but several service failures and other problems have been reported on this board. See these threads for a discussion:

Their FMC license is current with the number 021051NF, as is their MC# of 729978. As of 11/3/11, the BBB gives them a rating of a "B-" with 22 complaints in the last 36 months.

--Flat Rate Moving & Storage (independent) in Miami.

--K & S Moving and Storage (independent) in Sunrise.
This was one of five companies in the Miami area recommended to someone by the FL movers' association in June 2006. But as of 12/07 this company had a “D” rating at the BBB with 2 complaints in the past 36 months and 1 complaint unanswered:
http://www.bbbsoutheastflorida.org/BBBW ... ID=4004201
As of 11/8/10 it had improved to an "A" rating with the BBB and 1 complaint in the past 36 months.

--La Rosa del Monte (independent) in Miami (also NYC, Puerto Rico, and elsewhere).
This company has the website www.larosadelmonte.com. As of 11/8/10 this company had a “A+” rating at the BBB with 4 complaints in the past 36 months.
"aranaria" posted in 9/06 that her family had used them many times over the past 22 years and was always very pleased, although "they charge by piece, and that can get expensive" - her parents were set to use them again for a move to GA:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 2108#72108 (local, interstate, and international)
"smartkitten" posted in 5/08 that she was happy with her shipment to Puerto Rico involving a 1BR apt and a car--the price was very good although delivery was rather slow:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16158 (to Puerto Rico)

--Superior Moving & Storage (independent) in Pompano Beach.
AVOID this company, which has the website www.superiormove.com and the phone 954-978-9999. As of 12/07 it has 40 BBB complaints over the past 36 months, far too many, and a "B-" rating - As of 11/8/10 this had improved somewhat to 30 complaints, however the BBB rating had slipped to a "C-" -
http://www.bbbsoutheastflorida.org/BBBW ... ID=4003963
The company also has some bad comments here on MovingScam.com: http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3237
They were blacklisted on www.movingadvocateteam.com.

:alert:--Sureway Moving & Storage of South Fla., Inc. (independent) dba Sureway Moving and Storage in Fort Lauderdale.
BE CAUTIOUS about using this company, which has the website www.surewaymoving.com and MC #299962. Its phone number is 954-523-5999 and its president is Robert Buto. According to www.safersys.org it has 10 trucks (may be out of date). Safersys.org shows a high driver-out-of-service rate when Sureway’s drivers were pulled over for inspection--46% vs. the national average of 7%. The FL Division of Consumer Services told me that Sureway had 8 complaints between 2003 and 2007. (According to the owner, Sureway did well over 1000 moves a year during that time period.) As of 11/8/10, Sureway had an “A“ rating with 4 BBB complaints over the past 36 months. Reports on this company and its owner are decidedly mixed.
"aharris88" posted a complaint in 11/06 alleging overcharging on an in-state move:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10579 (within FL)
However, in 2/07 someone reported having had several successful moves with the company over the years, adding that "Sureway's owner is one of the nicest and most honest men I know, along with the office staff.":
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1005#81005 (several local moves)
A person considering Sureway for an intrastate move posted in 2/07 that Sureway's owner had impressed him as an honest, "up front" person:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 0618#80618
However, in 2/08 "smart consumer" posted that the owner, Robert Buto, was so pushy, unprofessional, and dismissive when negotiating an interstate move that he/she decided not to use the company, at which point the owner became vulgar and abusive:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 781#103781
Also, in 1/08 Mr. Buto came on the messageboard to complain that another company had cheated him, but it turned out that he had illegally brokered a move to that company without having a broker's license:

SOUTHWEST COAST (includes Sarasota and Fort Myers)

Allied Van Lines agents

--Robert Flinn Moving & Storage Co. (Allied) in Naples.
This company has the phone number 239-643-4440. As of 9/06 its overall quality score from the van line was in the "Excellent" range (4.48 out of 5):
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1889#71889

Atlas Van Lines agents

--J.W. Cole & Sons (Atlas) in Fort Myers.
As of 11/8/10 this company had an "F" rating witht he BBB and 1 complaint within the past 36 months. The BBB states this was due to the company failing to respond to that complaint.
"lahtiji" decided to use them for an in-state move in 9/06, reporting with relief that their sales agent did not present himself as a "relocation specialist." In a PM she elaborated that "the staff at both Vernay (who referred her to Cole) and Cole listened to what I needed rather than talked about what they'd do--a big plus." (italics added). She later came back to report that her move with J.W. Cole went very well:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9769 (in-state)

--Spirit Movers (Atlas) in Sarasota.
This company has good comments by industry professionals and it won a quality award from the van line in 2005 (Milton Hill award). As of 11/8/10 this company had 1 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months with a rating of an "A". We have no reviews as yet.

:alert:--Suncoast Moving & Storage (Atlas) in Fort Myers, Naples and Pt. Charlotte. Also known as Atlas Suncoast.
BE CAUTIOUS about using this company, which has website www.suncoastmoving.com and phone number 239-337-5550. As of 12/07 it had 13 BBB complaints in the past 36 months. An industry expert posted in 12/07 that Suncoast has a "conditional unsatisfactory" rating with the BBB and that it was a Mayflower agent until late 2006:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 746#100746
As of 11/8/10 this company had "F" rating with the BBB and 3 complaints over the last 36 months.

Bekins Van Lines agents

--Bekins A-1 Movers, Inc. (Bekins) in Sarasota.
This company was formerly known as Gates Moving & Storage and was located in Venice, FL. It has the phone 941-951-0660. It reportedly became a Bekins agent in 2003 but was an Allied agent before that. In 7/08 a MovingScam moderator was given the following information about Gates by an industry person working elsewhere in FL:

This location provides good services. Steve Gates is an estimator there and the son of the previous owner. The current owner is David Caruso, who owns several Bekins offices (Bekins A-1 agents) in CA, IL, and elsewhere. He elected to keep the name Gates Moving because of the good reputation that had been built up under Steve Gates' father. The general manager, Ken Speroni, has been at this location since the office became Bekins. The customer service rep/move coordinator is Carol, who has worked for United agents in the Washington DC and Orlando areas. The company has outgrown the Venice building and is planning to move to 1755 University Parkway in Sarasota, FL.
As of 3/11, this company had an "A+" BBB rating with 4 complaints over the past 36 months. No further information.

North American Van Line agents

--All the Way with Bill Vernay, Inc. (North American) in Cape Coral/Ft. Myers.

According to "Nancy" (works for NAVL), Vernay has been a NAVL agent since 1963 with multiple locations in FL and the company is family owned. Their legal name is Vernay Moving Systems and they have MC #425349. "ArchieWhite" (owns a moving company in Atlanta) posted in 6/07 that they stole their name from a now-defunct mover named "Van der Ahe" in St. Louis:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 9318#89318
We have a very positive review of this company by "perri p" for her move to Kansas City, MO:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3328 (interstate)
"lahtiji" told a MovingScam moderator in a PM that she had heard good things about them and they referred her to J.W. Cole when they couldn't do the move themselves.

United Van Lines agents

--Peluso Movers, Inc. (United) in Naples.
This company has the phone 800-741-8663 or 239-643-3303. As of 11/8/10 this company had an "A+" rating and 1 complaint with the BBB in the past 36 months. "ArchieWhite" (owns a Mayflower/United agency in Atlanta) posted in 7/07 that they are a good company owned and operated hands-on by the Johnson family:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 4054#94054
"chconnor" posted in 9/07 that a small shipment booked by Peluso and hauled by United to WA State went well--the sales rep Jeff Flowers and the Peluso workers who picked it up were nice and there was only a very small amount of damage:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14419 (interstate)

Mentioned but little information. This company's phone number is 239-332-3878. As of 11/8/10 this company had an "F" rating and 1 complaint with the BBB in the past 36 months.

Independent moving companies

--SPS Moving (independent) in North Fort Myers.
AVOID this company. As of 11/8/10, it had a BBB rating of a "C+" with 3 complaints over the last 36 months. It has reportedly operated under several different names in the recent past, including Sunshine Pack & Ship and Around The World Moving & Storage. According to www.safersys.org, its legal name is Thomas Logistics, LLC. It has the phone 239-489-1899 and the MC #517745 and has had two interstate license revocations since 7/05.

CENTRAL FLORIDA (includes St. Petersburg, Tampa, Lakeland, Orlando, and Ocala)

Allied Van Lines agents

--Berger Transfer and Storage (Allied) in Tampa. (Also many other locations nationwide.)
Early in 2010 Berger took over the Tampa facility formerly occupied by Cook (United), which no longer operates in the area. Berger's website is http://www.berger-transfer.com/berger-t ... ystems.htm and its phone is 800-817-2640.

--Blocker Transfer (Allied) in St. Petersburg, Tampa, and Ocala/Gainesville.
We have good remarks by industry people but no reviews. This company has a website of www.blocker100.com and a phone number of 800-237-8534. As of 11/30/11 it had an "A+" rating with the BBB and 1 complaint in the past 36 months. A volunteer who has made many valuable posts here as "PMueller" (Pam Mueller) used to work for this company.

--Coleman American/Sorensen (Allied) in Orlando and Plant City.
See discussion below under Sorensen. "JMillerFL" (works for a National agent; see below) posted in 5/08 that the company gives low quotes:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 165#109165

--Sorensen Moving & Storage (Allied) in Melbourne.
This company has the website www.sorensen-allied.com. It was mentioned as a good company by "PMueller" (then working for Allied in the Tampa area). It used to have branches in Orlando and Plant City but they were taken over by Coleman American in September 2006 and are now known as Coleman/Sorensen (see above). The office in Melbourne is independent and continues under the name Sorensen Moving & Storage. It was started by the father of the present owner, Scott Sorensen. As of 11/30/11 this company had 3 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months and a rating of an "A+". As of 9/06, Sorensen Melbourne had an overall quality score from the van line of 4.35 out of 5 ("very good") while Coleman/Sorensen Orlando had a score of 4.29 (between "meets standards" and "very good") and Coleman/Sorensen Plant City had a score of 4.00 ("needs improvement").
"Minnz21" moving from Orlando to Albuquerque decided on Sorensen Orlando largely because of the good impression made by Erin Schilling at that branch (phone 407-851-2770 or 800-700-2770 x112):
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 8503#58503 (interstate)
He also posted a rave review of the move itself, especially praising the driver (Lee), who hauls for Sorensen, as well as the unloading help from Albuquerque Moving and Storage:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 0912#60912 (interstate)

--Tredway's Moving & Storage (Allied) in Daytona Beach.
This company has a website of www.tredwaysallied.com and a phone number 386-274-5000. As of 11/30/11 this company had 1 complaint at the BBB in the past 36 months and a "D" rating. Formerly they had a Sanford office but that office reportedly closed in late 2007.
"PMueller" (then working for another Allied agent in FL) said that they had some good drivers.

--Werner Donaldson (Allied) in Tampa and Clearwater.
Mentioned but no information. This company has a website of www.wdmoving.com and a phone number of 813-886-8110. As of 11/30/11 this company had 4 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months and an "A+" rating.

American Red Ball agents

--Allways Moving and Storage (Red Ball) in Orlando.
This company's website is www.allwaysmovingfl.com and its phone is 407-290-9244. It is unrelated to the Paul Arpin agent Allways Moving in Kingston, NY, or to the dubious company Allways Moving in Chandler, AZ. As of 11/30/11 it had an "A+" rating with the BBB and 0 complaints over the past 36 months. "JMillerFL" (works for a National agent; see below) posted in 6/08, "I know the owner [John Davis] personally and he is an honest hardworking guy. He runs a clean operation." - http://www.movingscam.com/viewtopic/pos ... 428#112428

Atlas Van Lines agents

--Ace Relocation Systems, Inc.(Atlas) in Orlando.
This company has a website of www.acerelocation and a phone number of 407-855-9922. As of 11/30/11 this company had 0 complaints and an "A+" rating with the BBB in the past 36 months. The company won a quality award from the van line (Milton Hill Award) in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Among other things, this means that it had a "customer satisfaction" score of at least 4.10 out of 5.
"kdsykes" posted that Ace Relo did an excellent job on a shipment to GA in 6/08, singling out the estimator (Mike Cray) for praise:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16452 (interstate)

--Atlantic Relocation (Atlas) in Tampa and Sarasota.
This company has a website of www.atlanticrelocation.com and a phone number of 813-886-7726. As of 11/30/11 this company had 3 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months and an "A+" rating. It has good comments by industry professionals and it won a quality award from the van line in 2004. As a carrier, Atlantic Relo has other locations nationwide, several of which (Phoenix, Denver) have very positive reports posted on MovingScam.com.
In April 2005 "jnelsonufl" moving to PA posted a complaint having to do with a delivery delay and lack of communication:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4258 (interstate)
He told a MovingScam moderator in a PM a year later that his things were finally delivered 3 weeks after the end of the delivery spread. The reason for this is unclear. In any case, he said that he blamed both Atlantic Relo and Atlas.
"SundaySilence" gave Atlantic Relo-Tampa a rave review as an origin agent (inventory, packing, and loading) for his shipment to France in 9-12/06:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11029 (origin/packing agent for international move)
"frustratedandtried" posted a negative review of Atlantic Relo-Tampa in 11/07 for a move to VA, describing damage, delayed delivery, and attempted overcharging (people in the industry have said that Ace is currently better than Atlantic as an Atlas agent in the area):
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15178 (interstate)
"mama4jc" posted a complaint about Atlantic Relo-Tampa's poor communication and disorganization during her move to NJ in 7/08:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16965 (interstate)
"promover2" (owns a moving company in FL) jumped in to say that he knew the sales rep and company involved and her complaints were justified, although he pointed out that the move went OK overall:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 177#115177

--Lakeland Moving & Storage (Atlas) in Lakeland, about 35 miles from Tampa.
This company's phone number is 863-666-2700. It was mentioned as a good company by "PMueller" (then working for Alled in the Tampa area). The owner is Dan Druen, and he sometimes does estimates. They are a small office and rely on Atlas haulers most of the time. As of 11/30/11, this company had an "A+" rating and 1 complaint at the BBB in the past 36 months.

Mayflower Transit agents

"smartyaleck" gave this company a rave review for a move to Atlanta in 8/06, praising especially the driver (Virgil):
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9987 (interstate)

--Alpha Moving & Storage (Mayflower) in Orlando.
This is the "sister company" of Hilldrup (United) in Orlando and the companies share an address. Its phone is 407-982-1121. As of 11/30/11 this company had an "A+" rating with the BBB and no complaints in the past 36 months. No further information. Do not confuse this company with Alpha Moving (independent) in NJ.

National Van Lines agents

--A Royal Moving & Storage, Inc. (National) in Orlando.

It was formerly a Global Van Lines agent before Global was dissolved. Someone who posts here as "JMillerFL" is related to the original owner of this company, which was sold in 8/08.

North American Van Lines agents

--First Class Moving Systems, Inc. (North American) in Clearwater.
This company with MC #405647 has the website www.movewithclass.com and phone 727-446-0308. It was formerly a National Van Lines agent but changed to NAVL in 2008. As of 11/30/11 it had 4 BBB complaints over the past 36 months with an "A+" rating. "JMillerFL" who works for another National agent in Central FL (see above) told me in a 3/08 PM that he had had a good experience working with them.

--Schuman B-Line Moving & Storage (North American) in Largo and NY State.
This company had the website www.navlagent.com/schuman-b-line and the phone 727-535-0705. As of 11/30/11 this company had 0 BBB complaint in the past 36 months. However, in 8/08 people posted that this branch of Schuman had closed and its facility was now being used by Callahan Bros., which is owned by Joyce Van Lines (see under independent moving companies below). Reportedly Schuman (North American) is still operating in Oneonta, NY.

Stevens Worldwide Van Lines agents

--Tampa Bay Moving & Storage (Stevens) in Tampa. (Also dba Greg Dolphin Enterprises, Inc.)
This company has the website www.tbmoving-storage.com and the phone 813-740-1444‎. Industry people have posted that this agent "leaves a little to be desired." As of 11/30/11 it had 2 BBB complaints over the past 36 months with an "A" rating. Prior to 2008 it was a North American Van Lines agent.
We have a so-so review by "cardsfan" for his move from Tampa to Houston saying that Tampa Bay is a smaller agent. They showed up late and didn't protect the floors very well, but nothing was broken and they gave him the lowest estimate of the major van line agents:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1292#51292 (interstate)

United Van Lines agents

--Armstrong (United) in Orlando.
Armstrong is a large agent for United, and Armstrong Orlando finished in the top 10 of the Armstrong offices in 2005.

--Browning Moving & Storage, Inc. (United) in Lakeland (also in Tallahassee).
This company was formerly known as Fister Moving & Storage. It is owned by the same person, Randy Browning, who runs Browning Moving & Storage in Tallahassee. "JMillerFL" (then working for a National agent) posted in 5/08 that Randy is the current president of the FL movers' and warehousemen's association - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 200#109200 The company's website is www.browningmoving.com and its phone number is 863-683-6494 or 800-722-6683. As of 11/30/11 Browning-Lakeland had an "A+" BBB rating with 2 complaints (both administratively closed) in the past 36 months.
We have very good comments about Browning's performance on interstate moves from "23" (a sales rep for another United agent) and also very good comments from "PMueller" (then a sales rep for an Allied agent): http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6405
In 8/10, Browning-Lakeland came to the rescue of a local woman whose money had been taken by another mover who kept her goods on his trucks but failed to haul them. Working with the UniGroup organization www.moverescue.com, Browning stored her goods and moved them across the country for her at no charge. Browning's owner tells the story in this video - http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/dpp/consum ... elp-082010
"anoneemouse" moving to MD posted that personnel from Browning were very nice on the phone and offered to do an estimate within 48 hours, while Suddath never called her back: http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8254 (interstate)
"txtoco" who moved from TX to CO in 5/07 on a company-paid move gave a good review to the agent (Conlee-Garrett Moving & Storage in Bryan) and "top ratings" to the United Van Lines driver Kelly Wynn from Browning and Kelly's right-hand man, Terry:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13810 (driver/hauling agent for interstate move)
"MsVicky" posted a rave review of Browning-Lakeland in 3/08 for her move to CA, praising especially the "professional, polite, informative, helpful" sales rep Steve Chapman, whose estimate was the lowest she received, the office manager Wendy Klukowski, and the Lakeland moving crew Rob, Jason, and Willie--"They were fabulous! They were clean, well mannered, and polite. They really knew what they were doing and we had a great time while they were doing it!" There was minor damage but she had a check from Browning within three days:

:RIP:--Cook Moving Systems, Inc. (United) in Tampa (also in Sarasota, St. Petersburg, and Buffalo and Rochester, NY).
This company's Tampa facility was taken over by Berger (Allied) in early 2010. Cook no longer operates in Florida. --Hilldrup Moving and Storage (United) in Orlando.
See the entry for Hilldrup under VA for information about the company in general. As of 11/30/11 this company had an "A+" rating and no complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. We have no reviews of this branch but good comments by industry people. For example, "PMueller" (works for Allied in FL but used to work for United) has posted the following about Hilldrup in general--"The Hilldrup offices in the United system were always top quality providers. They handled many of my special needs high end executive account relocations either on the origin or destination end. These transferee's always received full packing and full unpacking with maid service to put items away and Hilldrup performed perfectly. They also had a decent hauling fleet with good drivers. As always, times do change and service issues arise with the best of companies, but I feel safe in saying you should be treated right and be able to receive a good relocation with Hilldrup.":

--Suddath (United) in St. Petersburg (Clearwater) in the Tampa area, Orlando, and Melbourne (Palm Bay).
For MovingScam's rating purposes, these three offices are being considered together since they are fairly close geographically. As of 11/30/10, the St. Petersburg office had an "A+" BBB rating with 1 complaint (resolved) in the past 36 months. Its General Manager is Ed Fitzgerald and its phone number is 727-573-0000 or 800-288-2808. As of 11/30/11 the Orlando office had an "A+" BBB rating with 2 complaints (all resolved or administratively closed) in the past 36 months. In 6/07, "PMueller" (working for another United agent in FL at the time) praised Bill Cook, a sales rep in the St. Petersburg office:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 0309#90309
She joined Suddath Orlando as a sales rep in 2008.
"paulj" posted a very good review in 8/08 of the crew in Orlando that packed his international shipment destined for Australia. He said that the actual forwarding was handled by Sentry International (Suddath) in Jacksonville, which also did an excellent job:

Independent moving companies

--Able Moving Company in Largo. Its legal name was A-AAA AAble Moving Company of Florida, Inc. and it also went by AA-Able Moving Company and A-Able Moving Company.
This company was reportedly out of business as of 2008, after being dropped as a Stevens Worldwide agent in 4/07. It had MC #443102, the website www.ablemoves.com and the phone 727-897-9211, 727-524-3936, or 888-455-7993. As of 12/07 it had 22 BBB complaints over the past 36 months, way too many. “On November 5, 2007 this company's accreditation in the BBB was revoked by the BBB's Board of Directors due to failure to respond to one or more customer complaints filed with the BBB.” http://westflorida.bbb.org/WWWRoot/Repo ... m=11002293
Safersys.org indicates that its drivers had a 31% out of service rate and some of the violations were for drug and alcohol use.
"jonbug" posted in 6/07 that he had a very bad experience using Able for a small shipment to CA. The goods were damaged on pickup by an inexperienced driver and held in Able's warehouse for weeks. Able also gave him the wrong weight for the shipment, although he later got a refund from the van line, and some of his belongings were temporarily lost in transit. Throughout, communication was very poor and there was never any apology from anybody:

:alert: --Florida Van Lines/Mid-State Moving & Storage (independent) in Clearwater (Tampa area).
BE CAUTIOUS about using this company. Although its website is at www.flvanlines.com, its legal name is Mid-State Moving & Storage Co., Inc., and its MC # is 133152. As of 11/30/11, it had 10 BBB complaints over the past 36 months. This company has been fined twice by the DOT for using a driver who has tested positive for a drug and using a driver before receiving a pre-employment result. --Martin Relocation Specialist (independent) in Ocala.
This company is listed on www.eMove.com and also allegedly on the www.gosmartmove.com website.
"Craig" used workers from this company to unload a U-Haul truck on his move from NH to FL and was pleased. He said he found them on emove.com. They would not be licensed as a mover and probably don't have either workers' comp or liability insurance, since most eMove companies do not:

--Modern Movers, Inc. (independent) in Lehigh Acres.

"Bonnie B" gave them a good review for a move from MI to FL in 7/05:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5244 (interstate)
However, there is a bad review of them on the Internet from 2006, also for an interstate move:

As of 11/30/11 ProtectYourMove listed its MC# as 583326, and the BBB listed the company with an "A" rating with 3 complaints over the last 36 months.
"SinDonor" posted in 10/08 that he used to work for Shurgard and had referred 10-12 customers to them for local moves with no major complaints, and that his own mother had used them successfully for a within-state move:

As of 11/30/11 this company had an "A+" rating and 3 BBB complaints in the past 36 months, but Two Men and a Truck has three individually owned locations in Orlando. However, "canajo" moving to CT posted in 4/06 that she had severe communications problems with AAdvantage Pensacola during the move, although they packed well and her valuable antiques arrived apparently undamaged--she said the NAVL driver was good:

This company has the website www.haynesmoving.com and the phone 888-434-2751. It was a Bekins agent at one time, but as of 6/07 was a Stevens agent. I like the way the website looks and the testimonials sound real. It seems to do a lot of military work. As of 11/30/11 it had an "A+" rating with the BBB and 1 complaint over the past 36 months. See this thread for a little bit of discussion:

This is the link to this post - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 7595#57595

Here's a thread where someone discusses Suddath, Armstrong, Freeman (NAVL), Berger, and a scammer or two (just for background): http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3548

Here is a thread discussing many Atlanta moving companies, large and small, giving useful information and links - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3698 Note that someone says to avoid Peach State Movers.

A moving company owner told one of the MovingScam moderators that most van line agents in Atlanta don’t do much local work if the job is small because there are too many ‘fringe players’ doing such jobs for cheap to make money.

Here is a GA Public Services Commission website where you can check out the number of in-state moves that companies have done and the number of complaints received:
http://www.psc.state.ga.us/transportati ... rsdata.asp

One person who is registered here who knows a lot about Georgia movers (he was scammed by Investment Planning Group) is "Doug." People could send him a Private Message to ask his opinion. Doug has posted this about Robert West at the GA Public Services Commission:

He wishes more people would contact the agency directly with these types of issues. As is with almost all of the governmental agencies they are short staffed and anybody who can supply them with documents and information involving these scams they will file a complaint and bring them in for a hearing. Generally once you are givin a hearing date you are not going to talk your way out of it. - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 9753#59753

Comments and reviews on this website suggest that people should AVOID the following companies with  in front of their names, although this list is not all-inclusive:

ATLANTA AREA

Note: this is an interesting post comparing estimators from five leading companies in Atlanta: Berger, Suddath, A.C. White, Armstrong, and A-1 Freeman:
lizard1 wrote: 6/9/06 - Am moving from Atlanta to Midland, TX next month so I interviewed a few of the larger carriers this past week:

Berger/Allied - Nice gentleman. Arrived early and gave me a very reasonable quote. Had a good experience with Berger in TX.

Suddath/United - No complaints. Interestingly had a littel higher wieght approximation than Berger but the price was lower? Maybe Berger didn't give that big of a discount percentage(not indicated on their estimate)?

Now it get's hairy!
AC White/Mayflower - Wouldn't give me an estimate after he inspected my house & belongings. Wanted to think about it and was interested in what other companies I had solicited bids from. He then started to tell me NEVER take the lowest bid as they are usually trying to pull a fast one. I agreed to an extent. He then faxes my estimate to me today(3 days later) and it's about 35% higher than my previous bids.

Armstrong/United - Guy called me at 1pm to confirm our 3pm appt. I told him that I was glad that he called in that when I made the appt, I told the lady that I could not get home until 3:30pm that day but the latest she could schedule was 3pm and that she would have the rep call me to set up the "unofficial" time. So I ask if 3:30pm is OK and he says not really but he'd "work late" for my business. Feeling bad for him, I say I can make it home by 3:15pm to help him out and he responds with, "3:15, no later right?" I say sure. Of course, I have to pass off a patient to a colleague and owe him one now so I can get home for this mover. I literally pull in my garage at 3:15pm on the dot and am surprised that nobody is out front waiting. I wait 5 min and call the guy on his cell but it eventually goes to VM so I leave him a msg stating that I've been home for 5 min and am ready whenever he is. I then check caller ID to see if he called and notice a call from him @ 3:04pm but no message was left. I wait until finally 3:45pm and call his office where the lady I originally spoke to told me that he's been waiting for me at my house and just left so she'd try and reach him. Of course she can't reach him either but left a msg. I confirmed the address with her and she wants to reschedule to which I politely said no. I never heard from that guy. I'm glad i didn't possibly move with them as I can imagine what kind of an operation they run by this example. DON'T USE ARMSTRONG IN ATLANTA!

Last but not least
A-1 Freeman/NAVL - Kinda of a sketchy dude comes over and he's really digging through my house, telling me how he's a band mgr but does this as well. He starts saying how I've got approx 10,000 lbs of stuff. I say that all the others have guestimated between 8-8500 lbs. He writes that down then continues on. Around midnight that night, he faxes me a quote with the cover saying that he was able to save me $500 from what other companies are charging me. I look at the quote and realize that he must have thought the 8-8500 lbs was the price quote rather than the pounds. So he had suddenly increased my weight to 12,000 lbs and added all these other fees(shuttle!) that other companies didn't have. He then has the gall to ask me to keep what he's doing under wraps as he likes me and is "hooking me up" so much so that he could get in trouble with his boss. I'm thinking I hope the band thing works out for you!

In summary, Berger/Allied & Suddath/United good. A-1 Freeman/NAVL & Armstrong/United are embearassments to the industry.

Will be going with either Berger or Suddath and will be sure to report back on the quality of the move! - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1130#61130

Allied Van Lines agents

--Adams Transfer and Storage Co., Inc. (Allied) in Atlanta and Gainesville.
This company's website is www.adamsallied.com. As of 12/3/10 this company had an "A+" rating with the BBB and 2 complaints in the past 36 months. As of 9/06 the Atlanta branch's overall quality score from the van line was only 4.17 ("meets standards"). However, "PMueller" (working for Alled in FL) posted that in her experience, Adams performed well for people moving short-distance between FL and GA:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1307#71307
"gatoaz" posted a rave review of a move with Adams to AZ, praising his move coordinator (Grace) and the van line driver (Horatio, probably from Nor-Cal Allied), as well as the unloading helpers in Phoenix:

--Berger Transfer (Allied) in Atlanta.
We have no reviews or comments as yet, but Berger is the largest Allied agent with 15 offices nationwide. This company has the website www.berger-transfer.com and a phone number of 770-682-7386. As of 12/3/10 this company had an "A+" rating with the BBB and 3 complaints in the post 36 months. For the period 2/05-2/06. Berger Atlanta scored 4.37 ("very good") in the Allied rating system with 210 surveys:

--Cathcart (Allied) in Alpharetta.
This company went out of business in 2007 and its warehouse facility was taken over by A.C. White Relocations.

:alert:--Coleman American (Allied) in Atlanta.
Information posted on this website suggests that people may want to BE CAUTIOUS about using this company. Coleman American also has an office in Savannah. As of 12/3/10 this company had a "B" rating with the BBB and 2 complaints in the past 36 months. It is associated with Covan, a small van line that is not part of Allied. Both Coleman American and Covan are HQd in Alabama and have a good reputation for servicing primarily military shipments. Recently both companies have been moving more into the COD market, where they are less strong. According to "PMueller" (working for an Allied agent in FL), at last count Coleman American had 28 offices nationwide. In 9/06 Coleman American in Atlanta scored 4.21 out of 5 ("meets standards") in the Allied grading system; in 2/06 it had scored 4.32 ("very good"):
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1920#51920
"atltopdx" posted that he used this company for a move to OR in 5/06 under Allied's "small move" program where goods are crated and sent by common carrier. After his things were in transit, Coleman American tried to get him to pay twice the supposedly guaranteed price on grounds that the goods weighed twice as much as they had estimated. Finally the manager (Tom) agreed to let him pay only $200 or so more, but charging him more appears to have been illegal. In addition, Coleman American lost one of his boxes and the shipment arrived late:

Atlas Van Lines agents

--Atlantic Relocation Systems (Atlas) in Atlanta.
Atlantic Relo is a large carrier with 11 offices throughout the U.S. It used to be affiliated with NAVL. This particular office of Atlantic Relo with phone 404-351-5311 is its HQ and it has a good reputation in the industry. As of 12/3/10 it had an "A" Rating and 5 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months, 3 within the past year. NOTE: in 5/08 the FMCSA fined a company called Atlantic Relocations, Inc. in Atlanta $2,100, but this is not the same company as the Atlas agent Atlantic Relocation Systems.
"2scared2move" was set to move with them to Ohio but hasn't yet come back to report:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 8297#48297 (interstate)
"Snazz" got quotes from both Atlantic Relocation and Armstrong for a move to Tucson, but never came back to report:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3820
"swoozies" reported having a good move booked by Atlantic Relo to WA State in 5-6/08 - Ace Relo was the destination agent and everything went well with just a small glitch where Ace Relo tried to charge him for a shuttle, but the charge was later reversed:

Mayflower Transit agents

--A.C. White Relocations (Mayflower/United) in Alpharetta (also in Atlanta, Macon, Savannah, and Hinesville).
A VERY GOOD PERFORMER with at least 5 good reviews and no significant bad reviews as an origin agent on this website. This company has the website www.acwhitemovers.com and the phone 800-288-1881. It is affiliated with both Mayflower and United. The owner of this company, A. C. White III, posts on MovingScam.com as "ArchieWhite." In 7/07 he commented that his grandfather started the company 82 years ago, he took over when his dad retired, and his son (A.C. White IV, called Chip) will be the next in line. He also said that the company has 30 over-the-road trucks (now closer to 25): http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 2747#92747 One of Archie's cousins, Tim White, is the Operations Manager and another cousin, Pete White, handles sales and customer service. The company does about 2000 moves a year, about 350 of which are local and intra-state (within GA) moves and about 1650 of which are interstate, most booked by A.C. White itself. The company reportedly has 16 salespeople in the Atlanta area alone: http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 0008#90008
As of 12/3/10 this company had an "A+" rating with the BBB and 2 complaints over the last 36 months.

"dukegaoh" reported that the estimator was good and the company settled his damage claim properly on a move to OH in 7/06, but the Mayflower driver (not under A.C. White's control) and loading crew (from A.C. White) left something to be desired:

"jendoe" posted that Archie White was "very nice and helpful" in talking with her about her 9/06 move from one apartment to another in the same complex. During the move the workers dropped some boxes, breaking a few things. However, she praised the office staff very highly and said her claim was paid promptly:

"jah2" posted in 2/08 that he had an excellent experience with A.C. White Relocations, which packed a 15,000-pound shipment, stored it for over a year, and delivered it to his new home in Charlotte NC. The driver, Eric Lee, and Eric's brother even moved some unrelated furniture into the home without being asked. "wryepicures" posted an excellent review of A.C. White personnel for his 5/08 move to Wisconsin. "AeroBoi" wrote a very favorable review of his move to Atlanta in 10/08. "bigmove" (used to own a moving company in GA) posted his opinion in 4/08 that this company is the best van line agent in the Athens area:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 676#106676
"mypaperanchor" posted an excellent review of Lindsay for a move to Chicago in 5/08 - it was the origin agent and probably also the hauler:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 375#109375 (interstate)
"ArchieWhite" (owns another Mayflower agent; see above) posted on the same thread that the owner of the company, Duke Lindsay, and his father Dewey are "honorable and fun guys....both of them are friends of mine."

North American Van Lines agents

--A-1 Freeman (North American) in Atlanta.
This company has a website of www.a-1freeman.com and a phone number of 404-732-9008. As of 12/3/10 this company had an "A+" rating with the BBB and 1 complaint in the past 36 months. Industry people have expressed reservations about the various branches of A-1 Freeman. Also, see the comment by "lizard1" posted above.

--Beltmann (North American) in Atlanta.
This company has a website of www.beltmann.com and a phone number of 770-995-7400. As of 12/3/10 this company had 10 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. A couple of drivers made bad comments about this branch on a drivers' messageboard in 1/07 - one called it "a joke":

--Armstrong (United) in Atlanta.
Armstrong is a very large agent for United and generally well thought of, but we have no reviews. As of 12/3/10 this company had a “B” rating at the BBB with 2 complaints in the past 36 months, 1 of which went unanswered.

--Classic City Moving & Storage (United) in Athens.
This company has the website www.classiccitymoving.com and the phone 706-742-8273. As of 12/3/10 this company had an "A-" rating with the BBB, listing 0 complaints over the last 36 months. Mentioned but no information.

--Hilldrup (United) in Atlanta.
This company has a website of www.hilldrup.com and a phone number of 800-241-5179. Opened office in Atlanta in 2/07. As of 12/3/10 this company had an "A+" rating with the BBB an 0 complaints over the last 36 months.

--McCollister's (United) in Duluth.
This company has a website of www.mccollisters.com and a phone number of 800-624-2132. As of 12/3/10 this company had 0 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. Again, McCollister's is a very large agent for United, but we have no reviews of this particular branch.

--Suddath (United) in Atlanta.
This company has a website of www.suddathrelocation.com and a phone number of 770-447-4366. As of 12/3/10 it had an "A+" BBB rating and 1 complaint in the past 36 months. Suddath has many branches and a large hauling fleet (desirable for interstate moves because it is more likely to self-haul your shipment rather than putting it into the van line system).
We have a very good review of a move from Atlanta to Nashville with Suddath:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2975 (interstate)
Note that this was a corporate account move (paid for by the person's employer) and sometimes such moves go better than "COD" moves paid for by customers. However, Suddath has a good reputation overall.
"vandytex" gave Suddath an excellent review for a move to San Francisco in 11/06, mentioning that Suddath provided free used boxes, wrapping paper, and tape and the GNTE cost was $2800 for 3300 pounds including a shuttle at origin (lower than both Berger and Atlantic Relo)--the road driver was Dwayne:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12007 (interstate)
"allen074" gave Suddath a basically very good review for a 2500-pound move from Atlanta to storage in Queens, for which they charged $1600; the only casualty was that the driver carelessly broke a desk and there was a bit of a confrontation about it, but even though it was particleboard Suddath reimbursed him for it:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13365 (interstate)
"spcadz" reported in 9/08 that her move to Portland, OR with Suddath went well except that almost all of her furniture was scratched up, presumably during transfer to and out of Suddath's warehouse. The over-the-road driver was from Mayflower and was nice:

Wheaton Van Lines agents

--NetMove, Inc. (Wheaton) in in Duluth and Suwanee.
This company has the website www.netmoveatlanta.com and the phone 770 209-9770. As of 12/3/10 this company had 0 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months, and a rating of "A+". Whoever did the testimonials page on their website did an excellent job. The testimonials are completely believable and include customers' photos and addresses.

ATLANTA AREA (continued)

Independent moving companies

--Atlanta Peach Movers, Inc. (independent) in Doraville.
Atlanta Peach has the website www.atlantapeachmovers.com and MC #355279. Its president is Orlando Lynch and its phone number is 770- 270-5586. When it was a Wheaton agent in 2004, it won a quality award from the van line: http://www.wheatonworldwide.com/press/Q ... -18-05.pdf As of 2/07 it was listed as a Stevens agent, but that relationship seems to have ended around 9/07. It is listed as a "Certified Mover" on the AMSA website.
As of 12/3/10 Atlanta Peach had 21 BBB complaints over the past 36 months, with an "A+" rating.
According to the GA Public Services Commission website at http://www.psc.state.ga.us/transportati ... rsdata.asp it did more than 6200 moves in 2009 and the Atlanta Peach website says that it did 15,000 moves over the past three years. If these figures are accurate, the number of BBB complaints is not too excessive. Note, however, that with about 2250 moves in 2009, Mark the Mover (independent) had NO BBB complaints.
Archie White (industry expert and president of A.C. White Relocations in Atlanta) emailed me as follows about Atlanta Peach: "Atlanta Peach is known locally as a decent company whose president is a hands-on workaholic type. It is very aggressive and growing fast--it spends close to a million a year advertising in the various Atlanta phonebooks and I have heard that it has 20-30 crews per day doing local moves. Mark the Mover is also considered a good, local moving company. For local moves, I would recommend either A.Peach or Mark the Mover with the same confidence….as well as my own company, of course."
According to www.protectyourmove.gov it has 25 trucks vs. 15 listed for Mark the Mover (could be out of date).
"scruples" posted bad comments about Atlanta Peach in 9/04 but they should probably be disregarded as possibly originating with a competitor: http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2552
"jendoe" reported having two good moves with Atlanta Peach in 2002 or earlier:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 0701#70701 (local)
Someone posted in 10/06 that his/her items were stolen while being stored in Atlanta Peach's warehouse, but never returned to follow up on these allegations:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10164 (interstate with storage)

--Buckhead Movers (independent) in Atlanta.
This company has the phone number 404-603-0234, the website www.buckheadmovers.com and MC #495616. It is listed as having 11 trucks on www.protectyourmove.gov. As of 12/3/10 it had an "A+" BBB rating with 5 complaints (all resolved or administratively closed) over the past 36 months. It is under the same ownership as Bulldog Movers (see below). It did 2200 intrastate moves in 2009. Mentioned but almost no information.

--Bulldog Movers, Inc. (independent) in Atlanta.
This company used to be a Stevens agent. It has the phone 770-333-8100, the website www.bulldogmovers.net and MC #469637. As of 12/3/10 this company had an A+ BBB rating with 17 complaints in the past 36 months, all resolved or administratively closed. It did 2452 intrastate moves in 2009. (Note that Mark the Mover had no complaints for a similar number of moves.) There is also at least one complaint on RipoffReport - http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/2 ... 252799.htm Bulldog also has one Hostage Load complaint from 2009 listed on www.protectyourmove.gov and anyone considering using this company should ask about it because that is a red flag. On that website it is listed as having 15 trucks.
According to the BBB, the owner, Erik Christensen, also owns Buckhead Movers (see above). In 6/08 "whodat1b" (mover in Atlanta) told one of the MovingScam moderators by Private Message that "Erik [owner of the company] is one of the nicest human beings I have ever met in this business." Other industry personnel in Atlanta have also spoken highly of Erik, who reportedly is trained as an accountant and is the president of the Georgia Moving & Storage Association.

--Climer Moving (independent) in Suwanee.
This company has the website www.climermoving.com and the phone number 770-932-1130. As of 12/3/10 it had a "B+" BBB rating with 1 complaint over the past 36 months, resolved. It did 151 intrastate moves in 2009.

--Georgia Pack and Load Moving & Storage, Inc. (independent) in Suwanee.
This company has the phone 770-409-8890, the website www.gapackandload.com and MC #396014. As of 12/3/10 it had an A+ BBB rating with 2 complaints over the past 36 months, both resolved. On www.protectyourmove.gov it is listed as having 6 trucks and it has one Hostage Load complaint dating from 2004. Anyone considering using this company should ask about it because that is a red flag. It did 1152 intrastate moves in 2009.
"jbhdawg2002" gave the company an excellent review for moving two apartments into a house:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9192 (local)

--Jason Taylor Moving & Storage, Inc. (independent) in Cumming.
This company has the phone number 770-889-9924, the website www.jasontaylormoving.com and MC #431164. It has 8 trucks listed on www.protectyourmove.gov. As of 12/3/10 this company had an "A+" BBB rating with 2 complaints over the past 36 months, both resolved or administratively closed. It did 688 intrastate moves in 2009. Mentioned but little information.

--Mark the Mover, Inc. (independent) in Atlanta.
A VERY GOOD PERFORMER with at least 5 good reviews on this website and no bad reviews. Note that all these reviews are for LOCAL moves. We do not know anything about the company's performance on longer-distance moves, although it does interstate moves using straight trucks, even going as far as the West Coast if the shipment warrants it. Mark the Mover has the phone 404-351-0018, the website www.markthemover.com and MC #342211.
As of 12/3/10 it had an "A+" rating and 0 BBB complaints within the last 36 months - amazing considering the large number of moves it does (2249 intrastate in 2009, plus several hundred interstate moves). It has hundreds of mostly excellent reviews on www.kudzu.com that sound genuine and also 25 or so 5-star reviews on yelp.com. Archie White (industry expert and president of A.C. White Relocations in Atlanta) emailed a MovingScam moderator in 2/07 that "Mark the Mover is considered a good, local moving company. For local moves, I would recommend either APeach or Mark the Mover with the same confidence."
According to www.protectyourmove.gov, it has 15 trucks vs. 25 for Atlanta Peach (could be out of date). Remarkably, of the approximately 2400 moves that Mark the Mover did in 2009, claims were filed on only 117 of them. This is a claims ratio of about 5% - almost unheard of in the industry. The owner, John Warren, told a MovingScam moderator that he expects it to be closer to 6% in 2010 - still incredibly low.
We have 7 rave reviews of Mark the Mover for local moves:
One--very detailed--is by "rjennings":

COLUMBUS

This company with MC #133659 has been licensed to do interstate moves since 1980. "ArchieWhite" (owns a Mayflower/United agency in Atlanta) posted in 8/07 that they are an old family-run company that used to be an Allied agent before becoming a United agent around 2000. He said they are located adjacent to Ft. Benning and do a lot of military moves:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 4981#94981
"kssams" (in Johnson City) called them to ask about moving her parents from Columbus to TN and the person who answered the phone didn't give very good answers--she speculated that they may focus on military moves and are not too eager to have nonmilitary business:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7434
However, "ArchieWhite" posted that they were fine for any type of move (see his comment above).

"Richard Amann" posted a complaint that this company damaged his things in a local move in Savannah and then failed to pay on claims:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 7899#27899 (local)
However, in 7/07 "RSinSC" posted the following highly favorable report about Two Men in Pooler:
RSinSC wrote: I was the property manager for an apartment complex, Hunter's Bluff, located in Savannah, GA. On October 3, 2006 a fire occured that totally destoryed 3 apartments and damaged 5 others. We contacted several moving companies to help out our residents as NONE of them had renter's insurance. Two Men and a Truck out of Pooler, GA came the very next day and moved all 8 apartments to different apartments on the property as we were having furniture cleaned from all the soot and smoke. They were courteous, quick, and did it all for FREE. I do not have experience with them for regular moving, but since I was just scammed myself by a bad company, I have decided to contact them instead since my stuff is still sitting in Savannah, GA and I am now in Greenville, SC. These gentlemen saved a lot of people from spending money they did not have after a destructive fire. I praise Two Men and a Truck for their giving hearts. :D - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 4397#94397

http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 7676#87676
Here's John's website as Mayor with a photo of him and some information about his company, which seems to do a lot of military moves:

Postby ILLINOIS (Part 1) » Thu Apr 27, 2006 2:51 pm

This is the link to this post - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 7598#57598

There is a very good resource for getting information on moving companies in Illinois. People can call the Illinois Movers' and Warehousemen's Association (IMAWA) at 217-585-2470 or 888-791-2516 and ask for the Executive Director, Patricia McLaughlin. She's familiar with MovingScam.com and has helped many customers in the past. She is a very committed individual who will "tell it like it is" to protect consumers. Also, people can look at moving companies' intrastate (within IL) moving record online at http://www.icc.illinois.gov/utility/hgsearch.aspx (website of the Illinois Commerce Commission), putting in the name of the company. Putting in the name of the city and county is not necessary. Then click on the name of the company to see its record of complaints and number of moves performed. Illinois is a regulated state.

For intrastate moves, Pat McLaughlin advises choosing a mover with 3 or fewer complaints with the ICC in a three-year period. She says that most movers in IL have zero complaints with the ICC, and movers who have more than 3 complaints (regardless of the number of moves they say they do in a year) have some issues that need to be addressed, since those written complaints most likely represent only a fraction of the unhappy customers. Pat advises giving first consideration to movers who show ZERO complaints on their record: http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 9619#69619

One of the moderators was told that Binding estimates are illegal for local moves in IL; such moves must be quoted on an hourly basis.

For local moves, several independent Chicago moving companies are mentioned in this thread although there are no actual reviews: http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5368

Comments and reviews on this website suggest that people should AVOID the following companies with  in front of their names, although this list is not all-inclusive:

 --ASAP Van Lines (independent) in Niles.
AVOID this company, which has MC #497834. See this thread for why to avoid:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9031
As of 1/3/11 this company had 105 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months and a rating of an "F".

 --Best Price Moving & Storage, Inc. (independent) in Chicago.
AVOID this company, which has MC #321559 and the phone 773-777-0145 See these threads for why:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1031 (three complaints)
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16298
As of 1/83/11 this company had 126 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months.

 --Callahan Moving and Storage (formerly a Mayflower agent under the name  Soraghan) (independent) in Tinley Park.
This company was reportedly terminated as a Mayflower agent on 12/20/04. It has a huge number of BBB complaints—as of 1/3/11, 86 in the previous 36 months. The owner is Tom Callahan. In January 2006 someone posted anonymously that the owner had changed the name of the company to Callahan Moving and Storage to try to erase its bad record as Soraghan:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1234#51234
We have four very bad reviews.
In the first bad review, "amoswb" posted that in November 2004 his shipment from FL to TX went by way of IL (!) and his washing machine arrived destroyed. He said he found Soraghan through an ad in the Tampa Yellow Pages:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3228 (interstate)
In the second bad review, "kdhfe" says that her goods had been in transit for a month between FL and North Dakota in 2005 and had gone into storage in transit in error. She said that the move was brokered out to Soraghan by a company in FL and the Soraghan driver gave her Mayflower paperwork to sign even though Soraghan was no longer a Mayflower agent at that time:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3957 (interstate)
In the third bad review, "troubled_by_movers" says that a scam broker called Consolidated Transport in Michigan booked the move from KS to FL with Soraghan. The goods were in transit for 2-1/2 months and items were missing at delivery:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6999 (interstate)
In the fourth bad review, "ryannjen" posted that Zip to Zip Moving booked their shipment from FL to AZ with Soraghan. The truck was supposedly stolen and then found but the goods were never returned. They were auctioned off by Soraghan and the customer lost everything:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 7309#57309 (interstate)

 --Dan's Relocators (independent) in Warrenville or Naperville.
AVOID this company, which has MC #286627 and an "unsatisfactory" BBB status as of 2/08. See this thread for why:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2213 (two complaints)
As of 1/3/11 this company had a BBB rating of an "F" with 4 complaints over the last 36 months, 1 of which went unanswered.

 --Galaxy Van Lines, Inc. (independent) in Niles.
AVOID this company, which has MC #553343. It was re-licensed (after a revocation) only in late June 2006 and there are two serious complaints about it at the end of this thread:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7882
As of 12/07 this company had 21 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months.

--Golan's (independent) in Skokie.
Golan's has a large number of complaints with the BBB. An industry person posted that it might be OK for a local move if you follow the truck from start to finish. As of 12/07 this company had 30 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. By 1/3/11, this number had come down to 18.
When "fresh off the truck" spoke with Pat McLaughlin of the IMAWA, she reportedly said that she'd had better experiences with Moishe's than with Golan's and that Golan's quoting by volume not weight was a problem as well:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 9121#69121
When "lily" asked her about Golan's in 8/06, Pat reportedly said that "Golan's is a member of our association, and I’m not at all proud of the fact that they currently have 8 complaints.":
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 9619#69619
"portlago" gave Golan's a good review for a local move in 7/06 but said the workers weren't very gentle and used 20 rolls of tape:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9259 (local)
"Jeri" said similar things about her local move in 1999 where the movers worked fast and did a good job but used 18 rolls of tape:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 5540#65540 (local)
Golan's has a bad review for an interstate move here:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1707#21707 (interstate)
It gave someone a seriously lowball quote here:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 5262#35262 (interstate)
Someone from the company falsified the number of its BBB complaints here:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 9496#29496
Also, someone possibly connected with the company made obscene posts here - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4951
In 8/07 "movingphilly" posted a bad report on a PA-Chicago move, describing untrustworthy workers, damage, and general flakiness:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14486 (interstate)
"windy1" posted in 1/08 saying that Golan's had been very good on several prior local moves. However on an interstate move Golan's failed to compensate him/her adequately for substantial damage and lost goods:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15531 (interstate)

 --Midway Moving and Storage (independent) in Chicago.
This company has a phone number of 773-588-7000. As of 12/07 this company had 63 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. By 1/3/11 this number had been dropped to 41 (still high). One industry professional commented that they should be avoided at all costs: "Drive by their warehouse and you'll see why. They're the king of casual labor and will throw a T-shirt on anyone who looks like he can pick up a sofa."
This company has a very bad review by "spumoni44" on a local move:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 2917#22917 (local)
"T. Gross" reported overcharging by Midway, damage, and unsettled claims:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 0567#60567 (local)
"MusicMom" investigated the company's record on the DOT website and came up with this: "Midway Moving & Storage had a 2 1/2 year interstate license revocation from Sept of 2001 through Feb of 2004, during which time they continued their insurance, meaning they were continuing to move, despite having no license. Also, within three weeks of each other, there were two crashes involving the same truck, and the same driver, citations issued both times. A third crash happened just three months before that. Not a great record. In addition to this, two of their three driver inspections failed, one for no or improper driver's license, and the other included not having the proper license to drive the truck (actually two separate charges related to this). I would not trust my belongings in their hands.":
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 6584#16584

 --Peacock Relocation Systems (independent) in West Chicago and Glen Ellyn.
As of 1/3/11 this company had 24 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months, two of which went unanswered.
"Tyrone" (founding member of MovingScam.com) posted in 2003 that Peacock had lost at least 15 lawsuits:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=551#551
An anonymous poster said that the owner of Bekins in Chicago told him that Peacock's employees were "just crooks" and even worse than Samson's (pot calling the kettle black?):
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 4923#14923
A serious complaint was posted about them by "skyewendy" in 4/07:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13535

 --Samson Chicagoland (independent) in Lincolnwood and Skokie.
Samson has a huge number of complaints and an "unsatisfactory" rating with the BBB with 38 complaints in the past 36 months. It is run by a David Ohana, a surname connected with a number of scam moving companies. There is a complaint about it on consumeraffairs.com mentioning a "David":
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/movers/samson.htm
Here are some posts discussing Samson:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 4923#14923
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 4638#64638 (complaint)
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 4810#64810 (serious complaint)
"Auri" (working in the Chicago market) posted in 1/08 that she had heard that Samson was out of business:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 886#101886

 --Sasha Transport, Inc.(independent) in Skokie.
AVOID this company, which has the phone 847-675-1223. See these threads for why:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8459
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5769 (starts with a probably bogus post; ends with a genuine complaint)
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5539 (includes a bogus post praising itself)
In 6/07 "debyac" posted a favorable report on Sasha for a move from IL to FL that was booked by Nobel Van Lines in FL:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14128 (interstate)
However, this one good review does not negate Sasha's overall bad record in terms of BBB complaints, safety violations, etc. As of 1/3/11 this company had 34 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. The BBB lists the owner as Sasha Cincar and the VP as YeFet Malka.

 --The Moving Experts, Inc. (independent) in Lincolnwood.
AVOID this company, which is a broker with MC #503668. See these threads for why:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9822
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10269
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11026
As of 12/07 this company had 24 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months.

CHAMPAIGN

Note that when "navsaria" moving to WI asked Pat McLaughlin of the IMAWA for recommendations for Champaign-area movers in 3/06, she recommended Hutchcraft (United), Federal/O'Byrne (Allied), and Jenkins & Key (Atlas), plus one other that "navsaria" didn't name, and "navsaria" was favorably impressed by the estimators for all three:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7677

Allied Van Lines agents

--Federal/O'Byrne Moving & Storage LLC (Allied) in Champaign.
This company has the phone 217-446-0713. As of 9/06 its overall quality rating from the van line was 4.54 out of 5, well up in the "excellent" range and about the highest MovingScam has ever seen for an Allied agent. As of 1/3/11 this company had 1 complaint and an "A+" rating with the BBB in the past 36 months. One person had John Olson as the estimator. This was one of the companies recommended to "navsaria" by Pat McLaughlin of the IMAWA in 3/06:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7677
"BBATCO1" (driver for Berger Allied in Chicago) posted in 6/07 that this company has been around for a long time and is run by good people:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 0758#90758
"swapan007" posted that although she had heard mixed reports from colleagues, Federal/O'Byrne did a very good job delivering her shipment that was sent by UPS Freight from NC:

Atlas Van Lines agents

--Jenkins & Key Moving & Storage, Inc. (Atlas) in Urbana.
This company has the phone 217-367-6531. It was one of the companies recommended to "navsaria" by Pat McLaughlin of the IMAWA in 3/06:

This company has the website www.cbhmovingandstorage.com and the phone 217-351-0629. As of 1/3/11 this company had 1 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. Someone posted in 4/08 that the company was out of business.
"Krillin" gave the company a very good review for an employer-paid move in 2004:

United Van Lines agents

--Hutchcraft Van Service (United) in Urbana.
This company has the website www.hutchcraftvanservice.com and a phone number of 217-328-3333. As of 1/3/11 this company had an "A+" rating with the BBB and 2 complaints over the last 36 months. entioned but not much information. This was one of the companies recommended to "navsaria" by Pat McLaughlin of the IMAWA in 3/06:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7677
Doug Daniels was the sales rep for one person ("seestars") who got an estimate, and it seemed as if the estimated weight was on the low side - he went with Moovers, Inc.:

Independent moving companies

--Twin City Movers (independent) in Champaign.
This company has MC #358777 and phone 217-355-1516. It is licensed for interstate as well as in-state moves. As of 1/3/11 it had no BBB complaints over the past 36 months, and an "A+" rating.

CHICAGO AREA

There are reportedly more than 350 moving companies in the Chicago area and competition is intense. A word to the wise: some of the worst companies are said to have some of the largest Yellow Pages ads.

Summary posts:

This is a useful thread started by someone who was considering four big moving companies in Chicago: Armstrong, Prager, Jackson, and Nelson Westerberg - viewtopic.php?t=5674 It has information that may help people.

In 5/07, "chewie" (moving to NYC) posted a very informative comparison of sales reps from Planes, Federal/Whalen, and Prager. Anybody considering these companies would do well to read this post:
viewtopic.php?p=87955#87955
Note that in 2007, Planes' sales rep Scott Johnson (praised by "chewie") changed his affiliation to Blackhawk (United).

Also in 5/07, "indexer" (moving to MD) posted a very detailed description of her dealings with sales reps from Planes (United), Del's Movers (Stevens), Midwest Moving (Stevens), Prager (North American), and Moishe's and In & Out (both independent). People considering any of these companies should read this post:
viewtopic.php?p=88849#88849

In 6/07, "endofwinter" moving to CA posted initial impressions of reps and quotes from Planes (United), Advantage (Wheaton), Graebel, Boyer-Rosene (Bekins), and Ace Relocation (Atlas). Note that the Wheaton, Bekins, and Atlas agents were sent by AAA's Consumers Relocation Services. Boyer-Rosene gave an extremely low quote with few details (see comments below):

viewtopic.php?p=90669#90669

In 9/08, "chitola" posted that she had decided to go with Ace Relocation (Atlas) for a move to Los Angeles and added very useful comments on the estimate process, including that the Graebel and Ace estimators were standouts although all five (including those from Armstrong, Berger, and Blackhawk) were good:
viewtopic.php?p=117901#117901

On 3/16/10, "gone2nyc" posted a very good review for Planes out of Chicago and singled out Heidi Zavala for praise: viewtopic.php?t=19069

Allied Van Lines agents

--Berger Transfer & Storage (Allied) in Addison (also many other offices in other states).
Berger has the website http://www.bergerallied.com and this office has the phone 630-620-1311. Berger as a whole is Allied's largest agent with 15 offices nationwide and 150 drivers working out of them. It was started in the Minneapolis area in 1910. The Chicago office of Berger has good comments by industry people although we have no reviews. Reportedly it doesn't do much moving of household goods.
As of 1/3/10 this company had an "A+" rating and 2 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. In 9/06 it had an overall quality score from the van line of 4.54 out of 5 (well up in the "excellent" range). It books and hauls a large number of shipments. A driver posting here as "BBATCO1" works for Berger Chicago and he posted the following about the Chicago office in 4/07: "We have 2 master movers [drivers ranked in the top 10% of Allied drivers] and 2 top 20 movers [drivers ranked in the top 20%] that run out of our terminal. Also, we self haul 99% of our tonnage.":
viewtopic.php?p=85256#85256
"chikabby" moving to MN posted in 9/07 that although she decided to go with Armstrong, Berger's estimator (a woman) sounded very professional:
viewtopic.php?t=14789
"vsbchi" posted in 5/08 that he would give Berger Chicago a "C" rating for his move to North Carolina--the sales rep was professional and provided free boxes and there was little damage but during the actual move, communication and organization were only fair:
viewtopic.php?t=16323 (interstate)

--Federal/Whalen Moving & Storage LLC (Allied) in Waukegan (Chicago area). Also in Milwaukee, St. Louis, and several other locations in IL.
This company's website is http://www.federalcos.com/chicago.html and the phone for this office is 847-336-6250 or 800-627-7790. Federal's HQ is in Peoria, IL. The company was founded in 1913. It is not related to Whalen's (Allied) in Mt. Kisco, NY. The Waukegan office of Federal/Whalen was one of the companies recommended by Pat McLaughlin for a move to NYC in 4/07. As of 1/3/10 this company had a "B" BBB rating with 3 complaints (1 unanswered) in the past 36 months. See discussion here: viewtopic.php?t=13432
In 1/08, "Chisme" moving to FL posted that Federal/Whalen's sales rep was "very thorough and professional. We liked him a lot." On the same thread, "joesgarage39" (former driver and ops manager) posted in praise of the Federal companies. He said that like Berger, "they too self haul most of their tonnage and they have always been looked upon as one of the better agents in the AVL system. . . . They still have the same management people in the top today [as they did 25 years ago] and all are committed to the service they sell.": viewtopic.php?t=15504
In 5/08 "Chisme" recommended Federal/Whalen to somebody else, giving additional info about the company:

"We just moved from Chicago. We got 4 estimates. One company we didn't go with (and probably should have) because the estimate came in a little higher than the company we used was Federal Whalen.

920 N Larch Ave
Elmhurst, IL 60126
(630) 832-6200

The Federal Whalen guy mentioned that he did a lot of business in upscale neighborhoods like Wilmette, Lake Forest etc. It came up because I have expensive bookcases with glass doors and he assured me that the company is used to handling expensive furniture and furnishings (china, paintings, antiques, etc). He also mentioned that the company has a number of husband/wife driving teams, and with the wife there, there seems to be more attention to detail. They also have a whole system of protecting the inside of the house from plastic wrap on the carpet to plastic wrap on the stair handrails.

I strongly recommend that you have them in for an estimate. The guy who came to see us lived in Waukegan, but I forget his name." - viewtopic.php?p=108824#108824

(Note that she gives a different location and phone number for the company than the one listed above.)

--Jackson Moving Services (Allied) in Naperville.
Jackson has the website of http://www.jacksonmoving.com and the phone 630-357-4400. According to the BBB it was founded in 1988. As of 1/3/10 Jackson had an "A+" BBB rating with 4 complaints in the past 36 months, all resolved or administratively closed (improved since a few years prior, when it reportedly had a high staff turnover).
Industry people posting here have made favorable comments about Jackson in the past, and as of 8/06 its overall quality score from the van line was in the "Excellent" range (4.45 out of 5). Jackson books and hauls a large number of shipments from the Chicago area and it does a lot of military (though not corporate account) work.
We have one pretty good review of an interstate move by "monica67," although there were a few glitches. There are three main threads where she posted. People should read them in this order and disregard all the places where people are arguing about unrelated things:
viewtopic.php?t=1537
viewtopic.php?t=2255
viewtopic.php?t=2347
Someone posted in May 2005 that a Jackson estimator cancelled an appointment twice -
viewtopic.php?t=4334 (interstate)
"intlmover" posted that an opinion that Jackson does a good job preparing shipments for international moves:
viewtopic.php?p=57893#57893
"chicago family" posted a bad report on a 600-mile move where the packers did a rushed job at the end and the shipment was then stuck in Jackson's warehouse for 24 days (!) during the summer of 2006:
viewtopic.php?t=10380 (interstate)
A report came in on 4/12/12 that Jackson has closed its doors and is now being run by Reebie Allied out of Franklin Park/Chicago. One professional felt that this was an unfortunate turn of events and said "In the past we have referred Jackson when our schedule was full here at Prager but I don't see that happening now."

--Pickens-Kane Moving & Storage Co. (Allied) in Bloomingdale and Chicago.
This company has the website http://www.pickenskane.com and the phone 312-942-0330. As of 1/3/10 the office on Greenbriar Drive had a "B+" rating with 0 complaints and the office on Milwaukee Avenue had an "A+" BBB rating with 2 complaints, both resolved, in the past 36 months. According to the BBB it was founded in 1951. "intlmover" posted an opinion that Pickens-Kane does a good job preparing shipments for international moves: viewtopic.php?p=57893#57893
Pat McLaughlin of the IMAWA (see above) recommended this company to "melissa" as a good company for moving antiques: viewtopic.php?p=41206#41206 Someone else in the industry said that they do a lot of office and industrial moves and may be somewhat less good for household moves. Their overall internal quality score from the van line as of 8/06 was in the "Excellent" range (4.44 out of 5).
"chikabby" moving to MN posted in 9/07 that she was underwhelmed by the Pickens-Kane estimator and decided to go with Armstrong even though its quote was $600 more:
viewtopic.php?t=14789

:alert:--Reebie Storage & Moving Co., Inc. (Allied) in Chicago.
Reviews and comments posted here suggest that consumers may want to BE CAUTIOUS about using this company. It has the website http://www.reebieallied.com and the phone number 847-994-8000 or 800-441-7311. As of 12/9/10 two "Reebie" companies were listed with the BBB, both with an "A+" rating. Reebie Storage & Moving at 10423 W. Franklin Ave. in Franklin Park (same address as Chicagoland Mover--see below under "North American") had 5 BBB complaints over the past 36 months and Reebie Storage & Moving, Inc. in Chicago had 1 BBB complaint over the past 36 months (i.e. there were 6 complaints for the two companies combined, which are listed by the BBB as being under the same management). This is down from 24 complaints in 12/07. In 11/10 Reebie also had 2 complaints with the ICC in the past 36 months.
Reebie reportedly does a huge amount of business, including COD moves (it is the highest booker for Allied in Chicago, booking more moves than Berger and Jackson). As of 8/06 it also had overall quality scores in the "Excellent" range (4.42 out of 5). Burrows Moving Company recommended it to somebody for a long-distance move, and "chaz4moving" (used to work for another Allied agent) posted in 10/08 that he had had good experiences with the company - viewtopic.php?p=118933#118933 However, the reviews and comments on this website are mixed.
"CT Girl" posted a moderately bad review of Reebie for a local move: viewtopic.php?p=13016#13016 (local)
And "California Nurse" posted a bad report on a local move where the workers were reportedly "nasty and threatening": viewtopic.php?p=38485#38485 (local)
Both of the above reviews say that Reebie increased the price from what was initially quoted, i.e. there was something similar to a bait and switch.
"chitoboston" posted that Reebie's sales rep sent him a "marginally rude email" when he canceled his 8/06 move to Boston with more than 30 days' notice, saying that he should keep his commitments: viewtopic.php?t=9610 (interstate)
However, "moving55" posted a very good review of a move with Reebie to CO in 7/06: viewtopic.php?t=9859 (interstate)
"lettezilla" posted in 5/08 that Reebie's estimator was "a jerk" who pronounced her name wrong even after being corrected and seemed not to want to deal with a woman: viewtopic.php?t=16168

Atlas Van Lines agents

--Ace Relocation (Atlas) in Elgin (also 8 other locations nationwide).
This company has the website http://www.acerelocation.com and the local phone 847-836-5200. The Elgin location won a quality award from Atlas in 2007 (Milton Hill Award). As of 1/3/10 it had an "A+" BBB rating and 2 complaints (both administratively closed) in the past 36 months. Reportedly it advertises on http://www.123movers.com. "intlmover" posted an opinion that Ace does a good job preparing shipments for international moves: viewtopic.php?p=57893#57893
In 6/07, "endofwinter" reported that Ace Relo was one of the three companies sent to him by AAA's Consumer Relocation Services. The sales rep gave him a Nonbinding phone estimate and didn't even offer to look at his things: viewtopic.php?p=90669#90669

--Baillie Moving Systems, Ltd. (Atlas) in Batavia.
This company has the website http://www.bailliemoving.com and the phone 630-761-0408. It won a World Class Commitment Award from the van line in 2009. According to the BBB, its president is Christopher Baillie and the company was started in 2007. As of 1/3/10 it had an "A-" BBB rating with 2 complaints over the past three years and no Illinois Commerce Commission complaints for moves done within Illinois. It is licensed by the Federal Maritime Commission to book international moves. A person who works at the company has made helpful posts as "chrisatlas" on MovingScam.com. No reviews.

--Deerfield Moving & Storage, Inc. (Atlas) in Wheeling.
This was one of the companies recommended by Pat McLaughlin for a move to NYC in 4/07. Its phone is 847-215-8747 or 800-244-6683. As of 1/3/10 this company had an "A+" BBB rating with no complaints in the past 36 months. It appears to be small because it doesn't have its own website. See discussion here: viewtopic.php?t=13432
"chewie" posted in 4/07 that no sales rep from Deerfield called him back for his move to NYC: viewtopic.php?p=87955#87955

--Nelson Westerberg (Atlas) in Elk Grove Village (also other locations nationwide).
This company the website http://www.nelsonwesterberg.com and the phone 847-437-7050. It is one of Atlas' largest agents, doing mainly corporate account work (i.e. very few COD moving of household goods). Because its priority is corporate work, COD customers may not get the individual attention they might get from other companies.
The Chicago office has good comments by industry people including "23" and "East Coast Mover" (a NAVL driver who works for a competitor). It is said to pay its people well and to have low turnover, a good sign. It received a quality award from the van line in 2004, 2005, and 2006 (Milton Hill Award). Among other things, this means that its "customer satisfaction" score was at least 4.10 out of 5. As of 1/3/10 this branch had an "A" BBB rating with 2 complaints (one unresolved, one resolved) in the past 36 months.
We have only one review, by "ventivent" of a move to Houston, saying that the estimator (Mike) was good and the packing went well, but the hauling took 15 days (!) and the company driver hired a couple of street people to help him unload. Not only was there damage, but all three sat around on the customer's boxes unprofessionally complaining about the heat and asking for more food and drink. "ventivent" also commented that the auto transporter recommended by Nelson Westerberg (Hot Shots) took a long time to deliver his car:
viewtopic.php?t=8547 (interstate)
"Kristene" moving to TX gave the company a good report on the pre-move process but never came back with a report on the actual move:
viewtopic.php?t=7782 (interstate)
"ChrisMo" posted in February 2006 that the company never called her back after she requested a quote through the Atlas website:
viewtopic.php?p=52506#52506 (interstate)

--Noffs/Atlantic Relocation Systems (Atlas) in Arlington Heights.
This small company has the website http://www.atlanticrelocation.com and the phone 800-323-7791 or 847-870-3200. As of 1/3/10 this company had an "A+" BBB rating with 2 complaints in the past 36 months. One person in the industry who had worked with them said in a Private Message that she would rank them about a 7.5 out of 10. Another person in the industry said in a Private Message that after Noffs was purchased by Atlantic, David Noffs ended up working as the General Manager for Ace Relocation, another Atlas agent in the Chicago area.
"jlg" posted in 6/07 that Noffs had an account with his professional organization and (through Noffs) he would be moved from NJ to NC: viewtopic.php?t=14015
They were mentioned by a customer whose interstate shipment was going to be stored with them: viewtopic.php?t=7245
In response to this, "mcgr" posted that she had a good move from Denver to Chicago by Atlantic Relo and this branch was the destination agent. In other words, this branch probably supplied unloading labor: viewtopic.php?p=53215#53215 (unloading labor)

--Prager Moving & Storage Co. (Atlas) in Naperville.
A VERY GOOD PERFORMER with at least 5 good reviews and no significant bad reviews on this website. Prager has the website http://www.pragermoving.com and the phone 630-276-1200. It was a North American agent for many years but switched to Atlas in 2009. As of 1/3/10 this company had an "A+" rating and 0 BBB complaints in the past 36 months (excellent) and 0 complaints with the IL Commerce Commission for intrastate moves. It has very good comments by industry people including "Ruges" (NAVL driver), who posted that when he asks Prager for loading and unloading workers "they do a great job for me. From coming in on the weekend's to coming in at 8pm to letting me use one of there trucks to do a shuttle, to having a nice clean facility with easy access/parking and qualified help." viewtopic.php?p=68772#68772
"BBATCO1" (a driver for Berger Allied) chimed in, "Prager has one of the nicest facilities I have ever seen."
Prager received a quality award from the van line (Customer Choice award) in 2004. Someone who knows the company well told a MovingScam moderator that it "sells, packs, hauls, and delivers 98.5% of all shipments booked each year just to keep a tight rein on quality. It books over $5 million in line haul each year and has 7 straight trucks, 15 tractors, and 50 trailers along with a 110,000 square foot warehouse."
Someone was very pleased with Prager for a small shipment to Raleigh, NC, that was delivered 4 days after pickup. He said Prager's quote was $300 higher than Jackson Allied's and Planes United's but the fast delivery was worth it:
viewtopic.php?t=8618 (interstate)
"chitoboston" gave Prager a rave "A+ 5 Star" review of a 4000-pound shipment to Boston in 8/06, praising its short delivery spread vs. Beltmann's much longer one, its courteous customer service people, and its outstanding driver (John G.). He chose Prager even though its quote ($4200 including two shuttles) was several hundred dollars higher than those from Beltmann and Reebie, noting that Beltmann's move coordinator was "very curt" and Reebie's sales rep sent him a "marginally rude email" when he canceled with more than 30 days' notice, saying that he should keep his commitments:
viewtopic.php?t=9610 (interstate)
"lbp" seemed to be leaning toward Prager (which was actually the low bidder in that case) for her move to Seattle, but never came back to report:
viewtopic.php?t=5674 (interstate)
"phw" moving to CT posted in 2006 that when he called for a quote, he was put in touch with "some guy at his home who said he was laid up with an injury and couldn't come out to do an estimate until he was recovered - this is their system???? He gave me a minimum quote over the phone without asking any questions except where I was going.":
viewtopic.php?p=62328#62328
In 5/07, two other people posting here expressed dissatisfaction with one of Prager's estimators, but the person later left the company:
viewtopic.php?t=13432
In 4/08, "bostontochicago" posted an excellent report on Prager for unloading her shipment from Boston in 4/07--it may have been the hauler as well:
viewtopic.php?p=106940#106940 (unloading help and possibly hauler for interstate move)
"aclight" posted a good review of Prager for his move to OR in 7/09, saying that Prager had a lower quote than two other Chicago companies and accommodated his request for a specific delivery date range. He was disappointed that Prager didn't self-haul the shipment after leading him to believe that it probably would do so - University Moving & Storage (North American) from Indianapolis was the hauler. However, Prager sent a skilled person ("JP") to supervise the loading and there was no damage to his goods on delivery. Interestingly, "aclight" saw a notation on his paperwork from Prager that "This customer is posting a report to Movingscam.com of his move process. Please be aware that this website is used by many people in Chicagoland to choose a mover@!" - viewtopic.php?t=18183 (booking and origin agent on interstate move)
"chi2la" gave Prager a good review for a move from Chicago to Los Angeles in December 2009 (the hauler was Lambert Transfer from AL and the destination agent was Andy's Transfer): viewtopic.php?p=128873#128873 (booking and origin agent on interstate move)

Bekins Van Lines agents

:alert:--Boyer-Rosene Moving & Storage (Bekins) in Arlington Heights.
Reviews and comments posted here suggest that consumers may want to BE CAUTIOUS about using this company, which is reportedly the largest Bekins agent in the U.S. It has the website http://www.boyer-rosene.com and the phone 847-385-0260 or 800-323-8558. An industry person familiar with Chicago said that its sales rep "could charm the skin off a snake." People who have had estimates from him have also been impressed with his seeming professionalism. However, several moving industry people have said that this office of Bekins doesn't have good teamwork and that Bekins Van Lines as a whole has service issues. As of 1/3/10 this company had as "A+" BBB rating with 0 complaints in the past 36 months. Boyer-Rosene has given several people posting here very low quotes.
"henriB" posted a very bad review of a local move with Boyer-Rosene alleging lateness, overcharging, and damage: viewtopic.php?p=37316#37316 (local)
There is a complaint about the company by "Timothy" on a move to NM describing bad damage and Bekins Van Lines' failure to pay on claims: viewtopic.php?p=510#510 (interstate)
The company gave "naples" (real name Sandy) a very weird, inaccurate estimate for an interstate move, leaving items off and referring to valuation as "insurance": viewtopic.php?p=8371#8371 (interstate)
Despite concerns, "jlj001" went with Boyer-Rosene for a move to St. Louis. He mentioned liking the sales rep, Jim May. He has not yet come back to report on the move: viewtopic.php?t=6794
In 6/07, "endofwinter" reported that Boyer-Rosene was one of the three companies sent to him by AAA's Consumer Relocation Services. The appointment scheduler was "curt" and the estimate lacked a breakdown of costs: viewtopic.php?t=13996
viewtopic.php?p=90669#90669
In 10/08, "caroldr" posted an excellent review of Boyer-Rosene for her move to MI, praising especially her sales rep, Jim: viewtopic.php?t=17468 (interstate)

:RIP::?: --Lake County Movers, Inc. (Bekins) in Waukegan. This was one of the companies recommended by Pat McLaughlin for a move to NYC in 4/07. Its website was http://www.bekinsagent.com/LakeCountyMovers and its phone was 847-623-3329. As of 12/07 this company had no complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. See discussion here:
viewtopic.php?t=13432

Graebel service centers

--Graebel American Movers, Inc. in Buffalo Grove (also many other locations nationwide).
Graebel with website http://www.graebel.com is a very large company that has many locations across the U.S. although some states are not represented. It does lots of national account moves but very few COD moving of household goods. This location has the phone numbers 847-808-8400 and 800-373-6401. As of 1/3/10 this location had an "A+" BBB rating with 1 complaint in the past 36 months.
"endofwinter" gave Graebel a very good review for his very small move to San Diego in 8/07. The driver wanted to pick up the shipment early and absorbed the cost of a shuttle, which was nice:
viewtopic.php?t=13996 (interstate)

Mayflower Transit agents

:RIP:--Century Moving and Storage (Mayflower) in Lombard. THIS COMPANY IS OUT OF BUSINESS.
The following is Century's listing before it went out of business.
BE CAUTIOUS about using this company. Century's internal quality scores are above average. However, this company was the target of a RICO lawsuit. Its address is 951 North Main Street, Lombard, IL 60148 (phone 630-628-3162). As of 12/07 this company had 2 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. See also the remarks below under Corrigan (United) regarding Century's sister company, Dupage.

--Fort Dearborn Relocation Management (Mayflower) in Batavia.
According to the BBB this company has the website http://www.blackhawkmoving.com, so it is apparently the sister company of Blackhawk Moving & Storage (United). Its phone is 630-879-2649. As of 1/3/10 it had an "A+" BBB rating with 1 complaint over the past 36 months, both resolved. Reportedly both of its sales reps are Masters Club members in the United/Mayflower program.
"ChicagotoCT" (Katherine) posted a very good report about her move to CT in 8/03, which involved storage for a few days, praising her sales rep (Carl), who gave her used boxes, and the loading team: viewtopic.php?t=397 (interstate)
"Chisme" reported in 5/08 that loaders for Ft. Dearborn disconnected a treadmill and then the Allied people who delivered it in FL didn't know how to reconnect it, and it never worked again: viewtopic.php?t=16120 (interstate)

--Glen Ellyn Storage Corporation (Mayflower) in Carol Stream.
This company has the website http://www.glenellynmoving.com and the phone 630-543-0500. It is a very large Mayflower agent and according to its website it was a "Circle of Excellence" winner in the past. It has very good internal quality scores from the van line. As of 1/3/10 this company had an "A+" BBB rating with 1 complaint (both resolved or administratively closed) in the past 36 months. As of 11/10 it had 1 ICC complaint in the past 36 months.
"Tyrone" (founding member of MovingScam.com) posted that it was sued by one of its drivers: viewtopic.php?t=1663 However, it appears to be an outstanding agent and has had good comments by industry people here like "BigLeeCalif," who worked with Glen Ellyn when he was with Chipman United: viewtopic.php?p=64228#64228
In 11/08, an industry expert posted that Glen Ellyn has three offices in the Chicago area and "has ualified for Mayflower's quality awards every year since Larry Smith took over the business over twenty five years ago.": viewtopic.php?p=119938#119938
Reportedly Glen Ellyn does a lot of household goods moving and also furniture distribution.

--McCollister's Transportation Group, Inc.(Mayflower/United) in Carol Stream (also 13 other locations nationwide).
This company has the website http://www.mccollisters.com and this office has the phone 630-668-9413 or 800-257-9595. As of 1/3/10 it had a "B" BBB rating because of an unresolved complaint (the only complaint in 36 months). See below under United Van Lines - this company is a dual agent. McCollister's nationally focuses on special products, not on moving of household goods.
"jluyka" reported in 5/07 that McCollister's quoted more than twice the amount of agents from other van lines for his move to South Texas: viewtopic.php?p=88726#88726

--Olsen Brothers (Mayflower) in Rolling Meadows. (As of 11/10, dba Johnson & Rudolph, Inc.)
This small company has the website http://www.olsenbrosinc.com and the phones 847-394-1900 and 800-621-7103. According to the BBB it was started in 1922. As of 1/3/10 it had an "A+" BBB rating with no complaints in the past 36 months.
"BBATCO1" (drives for a competitor) posted in 9/07 that Olsen is a family-owned and -run company that has been around for a long time and will treat people right: viewtopic.php?p=96952#96952
"vsbchi" liked the Olsen Brothers estimator (who he said seemed more professional than the Graebel and Planes reps) although he ultimately went with Berger for his 4/08 move to North Carolina: viewtopic.php?t=16323

North American Van Lines agents

--Beltmann Relocation Group (North American) in Carol Stream.
This company has the website http://www.beltmann.com and the phone 630-665-7439 for this branch. As of 1/3/10 this branch had an "A" BBB rating with 4 complaints over the past 36 months, all resolved or administratively closed. Beltmann as a whole is a very large agent with 196 trucks and about 13 locations nationwide as of 12/10, mainly in the Midwest and South but also in Los Angeles and Phoenix. It does a lot of corporate account work and is also big in logistics (product distribution) but does not do much COD work. In 2006 a drivers' chat messageboard reported that Beltmann was going to stop handling household goods in Chicago, but as of 12/10 that has not happened.
"chitoboston" posted that its move coordinator was "curt":

:alert:--Chicagoland Mover (North American) in Franklin Park. THIS COMPANY MAY HAVE DISSOLVED OR CHANGED ITS NAME AS OF 12/10.
Reviews and comments posted here suggest that consumers may want to BE CAUTIOUS about using this company because of its association with Reebie (Allied), which has a :alert: symbol, although we have no reviews of Chicagoland. In 2008 Chicagoland Mover had the address 10423 W. Franklin Ave., the website http://www.chicagolandmover.net/ and the phone 847-994-8000. "chaz4moving" (used to work for an Allied agent) posted in 10/08 that it was owned by Reebie - viewtopic.php?p=118933#118933 As noted above under Reebie (Allied), in 2008 Chicagoland Mover had the same address as one of the "Reebie" companies listed with the BBB. However, as of 12/10 the website listed above for Chicagoland resolved to discussion of Reebie and the BBB had no listing for Chicagoland in Franklin Park.

Paul Arpin Van Lines agents

People considering using Paul Arpin agents for interstate moves should keep in mind that some moving industry people have advised against doing this for a cross-country move (for example). Arpin is a smaller van line that doesn't have the network of drivers and agents to assist that a larger van line would have. They say that if it isn't possible for you to moved by a truck and driver from the agent that booked your move, it may be somewhat risky to use Paul Arpin.

--Wm Meyers Movers (Arpin) in Itasca.
This company has the website http://www.meyersmovers.com and the phone 630-773-0400 or 800-248-3300. It has been an Arpin agent for more than 20 years and according to its website it was Arpin Agent of the Year in 2006. As of 1/3/10 this company had an "A+" rating and no complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months.
We have one very good review by "chitoaustin" (Lori) of a 1300-pound shipment to Austin, TX that was moved by a truck and driver (Luis) from Meyers:

Stevens Van Lines agents

--Del's Movers, Inc. (Stevens) in Arlington Heights.
This company has the website http://www.delsmovers.com and the phone 847-797-6683. Its legal name is F.M.S. Incorporated. As of 1/08 it had 3 complaints over the past 36 months listed on the ICC website, for damage to property. As of 1/3/10 it had an "A+" BBB rating with 5 complaints (all resolved or administratively closed) over the past 36 months.
There are two very good reviews of this company on the following thread, one by "lindsey_own" from 2002 and one by "Kenny365" from 5/05:
viewtopic.php?t=3711 (local)
"lindsey_own" subsequently used them to load a Broadway Express truck and was pleased.

—Midwest Moving & Storage, Inc. (Stevens) in Elk Grove Village.
This company with MC #198621 has the website http://www.midwestmoving.com and the phone 847-593-7201 or 888-722-6683. According to http://www.protectyourmove.gov it has 23 trucks. As of 1/3/10 it had an "A+" BBB rating with 1 complaint within the last 36 months, and no complaints on the ICC website within the past 36 months for intra-IL moves. However, a competitor told a MovingScam moderator that this company advertises heavily and that consumers should be cautious. Although it was a Stevens agent as of 12/10, this was not indicated on Midwest's website, which is a bit unusual.

United Van Lines agents

--Adco Van & Storage (United) in Crystal Lake.
This company has the website http://www.adcomovers.com and the phone is 847-381-1740 or 800-323-7596. It is a small, family-owned company that reportedly does about 100 interstate moves a year. As of 1/3/10 Adco had an "A+" rating and 3 complaints with the BBB in the past 36 months. Its warehouse is reportedly very old and its equipment is basic but it has fairly good comments by people in the industry: viewtopic.php?t=4761
"addison" gave it a very good review as an origin agent for her move to NYC--she also praises the hauler, a United agent from North Carolina:
viewtopic.php?t=7414 (interstate)

:alert:--All Chicagoland Moving & Storage (United) in Elmhurst.
Reviews and comments posted here suggest that consumers may want to BE CAUTIOUS about using this company. This company has the website http://www.allchicagoland.com and the phone 630-832-4114 or 800-322-2718. A MovingScam moderator was told that All Chicagoland is the only United agent that does a large number of local moves - others tend to stay away from them, partly because they face strong competition from independent companies that compete aggressively for such moves. All Chicagoland used to be a Bekins agent and--for what it's worth--an industry person (not a competitor) said in 11/06 that it is populated by used-car-salesman types who do what they have to in order to get a move. Reportedly it doesn't do much repeat business. As of 1/3/10 this company had an "A+" BBB rating with 5 complaints (all resolved or administratively closed) in the past 36 months. However, it had 2 complaints with the ICC over the past 36 months for intra-IL moves, and Pat McLaughlin at the IMAWA has said to avoid any company that has any complaints at all there - http://www.icc.illinois.gov/utility/hgp ... spx?mc=724
This company has two reviews of actual moves here. It has one very good one posted by "Judy" as a hauling agent on her move from NYC to Chicago: viewtopic.php?p=24029#24029 (interstate)
It has one not-so-good review by "movingtoCT" as a booking/origin agent that stored goods long-term in its Chicago warehouse before they were delivered to CT by another United agent. At some point the inventory sheets for the stored items were lost and on delivery day some items were missing--it is isn't clear whether All Chicagoland or the van line was at fault, but the evidence pointed to All Chicagoland:

--Armstrong Relocation (United) in Itasca.
A VERY GOOD PERFORMER with at least 5 good reviews and no significant bad reviews on this website. Armstrong overall has 22 locations, mainly in the South. It has won many quality awards from the van line and is one of the top five agents for United nationwide. "Michael" posted in 2005 that it had had an agency in Chicago for only about four years (it reportedly bought the old Cook location that wasn't doing very well and kept some of the Cook personnel). As of 1/3/10 this company had an "A+" with 1 complaint at the BBB in the past 36 months.
In 2011 a sales rep named Scott Johnson joined Armstrong as head of residential moving. He was formerly with Planes and Blackhawk and is a member of United's Masters Club, i.e. in the top 7% in sales. His cell phone number is 630-740-6964 and he posts on MovingScam as "moveman."
Just as an FYI, MovingScam moderators think that someone at Armstrong posted bogus reviews on this website praising the company under the names "Jess" and "Melissa"--a practice not usually associated with high-quality operations. However, this could have been just one out-of-control employee, and reportedly that employee had left Armstrong by 2010.
"spumoni44" posted a so-so review of her move to Los Angeles - problems included an illegible contract, an unresponsive sales rep, packing problems on loading day, damage to a computer keyboard by the driver, and a missing box:
viewtopic.php?p=28175#28175 (interstate)
There is also a very good review of Armstrong--the only glitch was a slightly damaged particleboard shelf and a missing (cheap, old) vacuum cleaner:
viewtopic.php?t=3472 (interstate)
"hking27" posted saying that on the basis of reviews on this website, he chose Armstrong for a move from Chicago to the NYC area in January 2006 and was extremely pleased:
viewtopic.php?p=59727#59727 (interstate)
"Marina Q" posted a rave report on Armstrong, singling out her sales rep (Gina) and move coordinator (Amanda) for arranging a move to Seattle at the last minute - she didn't comment on the delivery so we can't be sure how the whole move went, but she liked the packers and driver. A later poster on the same thread said that she also had Gina as her sales rep, so we know that the first review wasn't bogus:
viewtopic.php?t=7348 (interstate)
(Reportedly Gina was working for another moving company as of 2010.)
"chikabby" moving to MN posted in 9/07 that she decided to go with Armstrong even though its quote was $600 more than the one from Pickens-Kane--she praised the professionalism and patience of the male sales rep--but we have no final report:
viewtopic.php?t=14789
"mypaperanchor" posted an excellent report on Armstrong-Chicago's workers for delivery of a shipment from GA in 5/08: viewtopic.php?p=109375#109375 (destination agent for interstate move)
In the fall of 2010 "RS23" gave Armstrong-Chicago high marks for his move to New Haven, CT:

--Barrett Moving & Storage (United) in Waukegan (also locations in Wisconsin and Minnesota).
This is an old, established company with website http://www.barrettmoving.com and branches in other states. Reportedly in 3/08 it was planning to close its original location in Gurnee and service Chicago from WI. There is still a phone number listed for a Waukegan location, however - 866-905-3079. As of 1/3/10 the Waukegan location had an "A+" rating with the BBB and 3 complaints in the last 36 months.

--Blackhawk(United) in Sycamore (near DeKalb).
This company has the website http://www.blackhawkmoving.com and the phone 815-895-8136 or 800-435-5703. It reportedly does more household moves than any other United agent in the area - projected to be about 1300 in 2010. About 55% are national account moves and about 45% are COD. Blackhawk has been praised by moving professionals here including "Michael" and it has won a Customer Choice award from the van line several times, most recently in 2004. It is the sister company of Fort Dearborn Relocation Management (Mayflower) in Batavia.
As of 1/3/10 Blackhawk had an "A+" BBB rating with 4 complaints in the past 36 months, all resolved or administratively closed. It is a reputable family-owned mover that advertises for business on the http://www.123movers.com website. Blackhawk has had 1 complaint reported to the IL Commerce Commission over the past 3 years, which was judged to be unfounded.
"chitola" posted in 9/08 that Blackhawk moved his father to San Diego in 2006 in a corporate move, and his father was very pleased:
viewtopic.php?p=117530#117530 (interstate)
The company has two good reviews posted on the 123movers.com website, both dating from 2007 - http://www.123movers.com/moving_service.asp?blackhawk
The first is by "Kathy" in 4/07 saying that "The men they sent to do the job were very polite and not one thing broke or got damaged. They moved the entire house including the attic and basement. I was very satisfied in every way. I recommend this company to anyone looking to move." (local)
The second is from "Dave Yusling" in 7/07 saying that "Blackhawk Moving and Storage did an excellent job moving my things within IL, I have never recommended a company before but they really have great employees and great service. The movers went over how the move was going to go and asked us what we thought about all the decisions in the move instead of just loading all of our things without even telling us or even talking to us like the last company we worked with." (within IL)
There is another good review of Blackhawk posted at http://www.relocation.com/Reviews/Custo ... geNumber=1 -
"TA" posted in 3/10, "Chicago area to Charlotte - Great relocation. Our estimator was great and very knowledgeable, those packing and unpacking the truck were great at both locations, and the driver was prompt and kept us updated on what to expect. Very impressed all around." (interstate)
There's a good review posted on Yelp at http://www.yelp.com/biz/blackhawk-movin ... e-sycamore:
"Michael O" posted in 8/10, "They did a good job on my move from Chicago to Philly. They did a very good job handling my items. There is a lack of communication/research in that they didn't know how to get the truck to my home in Chicago and avoid the low viaducts and then in Philadelphia they had not arranged for parking restrictions. So a good job, but they need to do a little more research/paperwork beforehand." (interstate)

--Corrigan Moving Systems (United) in Lombard. (Also many locations in MI as well as locations near Toledo OH and Rochester NY.)
This company has a website of http://www.corriganmoving.com and a phone number of 630-317-0100 or 800-251-9233. As of 1/3/10 this branch had an "A+" BBB rating with 3 complaints over the past 36 months and its manager was Tim Kennedy (formerly General Manager at Armstrong), following Dan Sorenson and his brother Rob Sorenson (formerly of Suburban). Also as of 11/10 this branch had several bad reviews on Yelp.com, mostly having to do with poor communication possibly connected to staff turnover (some reviews are posted under Addison, where the branch was originally located, and some under Lombard, and some reviews have been filtered).
In 2007, Corrigan (which has an excellent reputation in its Michigan locations) bought Dupage Moving and Storage, another United agent in Lombard that had quality problems. The name "Dupage" was then dropped. Dupage was the target of a RICO lawsuit as described above under Century (Mayflower). Dupage and Century are discussed here:
viewtopic.php?t=1460
On the above thread, someone posted the following anonymously in November 2005: "Dupage Moving & Storage is in the process of being sold to another United agent with a much better reputation. They will probably change the name. Century Moving and its owner Robert Fleming are crooks in the worse way. Century is a tremendous liability to the Mayflower system. Either they need to shut them down or the Illinois Commerce Commission needs to." This statement seems to have been correct. As of 2007, both Century and Dupage went out of business.
In 11/08, "pragma05" posted a rave (A+) review of Corrigan for a move from Chicago to Dallas, praising especially the sales rep (Rob Sorenson, phone 773-531-1353 - as of 11/10 he works for Planes), the driver (Dominic), and the move coordinator (Mary). Communication was outstanding and the driver courteously waited 3 hours to deliver in Dallas so the house could close:
viewtopic.php?t=17569 (interstate)
On the other hand, "FrankieT" posted a report in 7/10 expressing disappointment with Corrigan and its move coordinator Crystal for a botched packing job and minor damage on a shipment to NY. Rob Sorenson was good as the sales rep but left before the shipment was picked up: viewtopic.php?t=19586 (origin agent for interstate move)
"bogglemary" came back and gave a rave review of Corrigan on 8/27/11 giving high praise to Bob McWilliams, Devin & Brian:

--Hollander Storage and Moving Company (United) in Elk Grove Village.
This company with website http://www.hollandermoving.com and phone 847- 439-2140 or 800-323-6600 used to be an Allied agent. It does mostly office and industrial shipments (O and I) but also some COD work. In 11/06 an industry person (not a competitor) told one of the MovingScam moderators that Hollander went through a generation change several years previously that caused some upheaval, but things had settled down since then. In 5/08, "ArchieWhite" (owns a United agency in Atlanta) posted that "they are 120 years old, and a well known, well respected agent."- viewtopic.php?p=108415#108415
As of 1/3/10 this company had an "A+" BBB rating with 1 complaint n the past 36 months. As of 12/10 it had no complaints on the ICC website in the past 36 months for its approximately 300 moves within IL. No reviews.

--McCollister's Transportation Group, Inc. (United/Mayflower) in Carol Stream. (Also in many other locations nationwide.)
McCollister's overall with website http://www.mccollisters.com is a large agent with many offices nationwide. It is HQd in Burlington, NJ, and focuses on corporate accounts and logistics (product distribution) rather than COD moves. This office has the phone 630-668-1818 and although it is the largest United agent in the Chicago area, only about 25% of its shipments are household goods. Reportedly it hired a couple of sales reps from Suburban (United) when the latter was bought by Wherley (United) in Minnesota. As of 3/08 this office of McCollister's had an "unsatisfactory" BBB rating because of an unanswered complaint. As of 1/3/10 it had a "B" rating with the BBB, but the 1 unanswered complaint was still listed.

--Planes Moving and Storage of Chicago (United) in Aurora.
A VERY GOOD PERFORMER with at least 5 good reviews and no significant bad reviews as an origin agent on this website. Planes has offices in Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, and Indianapolis as well as in Chicago and its HQ is in Cincinnati. This company has the website http://www.planescompanies.com and this office's phone number is 630-851-3700. As of 1/3/10 this office had an "A+" BBB rating with 2 complaints (resolved) in the past 36 months. Reportedly it is "huge" in Ohio. It specializes in corporate moves and is one of United's largest international bookers. "23" (working for another United agent) has praised Planes United on the messageboard a couple of times, as has "IMP" (who doesn't work for United). Someone posting here as "moveman" (Scott Johnson) used to be the director of sales for Planes Chicago, a relatively new office started in 1999. He told a MovingScam moderator in a Private Message that Planes United self-hauls all shipments going under 250 miles and 75% of the loads that it books. In other words, it uses its own trucks and drivers for these shipments (desirable). "Planes as a whole have well over 200 vans and one is within six hours of any location in the contiguous United States." Many of the drivers who handle Chicago jobs in fact come from Planes Ohio. Planes Chicago itself has 30 trucks.
Planes Chicago has two very good reviews of interstate moves--the only glitches being that one customer had minor damage to a couple of picture frames and the other had damage to a dresser during unloading.

Planes also has a good review by "AJ" of the pre-move process for a move to Atlanta in 1/04:

There is also a review describing a botched move from Chicago to Knoxville. First the truck broke down and then the driver got seriously lost on his way to Knoxville. Note, however, that this was a botch and not a scam:

"chewie" (moving to NYC) posted in 5/07 that his sales rep Scott Johnson was in United's "Masters Club" (top 7% in sales) and that he was very impressed with Scott as honest and thorough. He later added that the move with Planes had gone well:

(Note that Scott left Planes in 2007 for Blackhawk United and as of 2011 he is with Armstrong.)
"psmoore" gave Planes an excellent review of his move from Chicago to Toronto, praising its sales rep as more knowledgeable about moves to Canada than Armstrong's sales rep - "All aspects with Planes went fantastic, prompt and helpful. No complaints at all. Delivery in Toronto with a crew from Calgary (Highland United) was even better, impressive in the middle of 100 degree heatwave.":
viewtopic.php?t=9628 (US to Canada)
"JaimeS" posted an excellent review of a self-hauled shipment to TX in 1/07: "Sales rep (Scott Johnson) was efficient, very straightforward and helpful. The two-man moving crew was great, efficient, etc. They took our possessions all the way from Chicago to Austin, TX, no hand-off. We arrived Sunday night, and they arrived Monday morning, as promised, just 5 days after leaving Chicago. Nothing broken or missing. Our weight ended up being a bit less than the estimate, and we received our refund within a month, as promised.":
viewtopic.php?t=11656 (interstate)
"sebo13" posted a rave review of a short-notice move to Atlanta in 3/07, praising Scott Johnson (sales rep), coordinator (Virginia), and driver and helper (Eric and Jay). The shipment was self-hauled by Planes. Delivery took 6 days and nothing was damaged:
viewtopic.php?t=13305 (interstate)
"palmelb" reported that Planes was excellent on her move to NC in 8/07, praising especially the Planes driver (Scott), who made a special trip to pick up items from her storage unit on his day off and was extraordinarily careful to make sure that all her belongings were delivered--he didn't rush her to check things off:
viewtopic.php?p=94394#94344 (interstate)
"toro" reported in 8/07 that his shipment to Montana was delivered 4 days after the end of the delivery spread, but United Van Lines (which did the hauling) compensated him with $75/day for expenses during those 4 days. He was very pleased with Planes' packing and loading as the origin agent:

CHICAGO AREA (continued)

Wheaton Van Lines agents

--Advantage Moving & Storage, Inc. (Wheaton) in Algonquin.
This company with MC #695718 has the website www.advantage-move.com and the phone 847-658-3600. According to www.safersys.org it has 5 trucks. As of 12/14/10 it had an "A+" BBB rating with 1 complaint (resolved) in the past 36 months.
"lpendlet" reported that a shipment booked from VA to Chicago in Spring 2005 was stranded in Kentucky when the truck broke down and delivery (by Advantage) was seriously delayed: http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 8501#68501 (interstate)
In 6/07, "endofwinter" reported that Advantage was one of the three companies sent to him by AAA's Consumer Relocation Services and the sales rep seemed like a former truck driver: http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13996

--Leibundguth Moving & Storage (Wheaton) in Downers Grove.
This small family-owned company has the website www.leibundguthmovers.com and the phone 630-969-0700. As of 12/14/10 this company had an "A+" BBB rating with 1 complaint (resolved) in the past 36 months. According to its website it was founded in 1928.
"nandita" posted in 9/07 that Leibundguth had its IL license revoked in 8/07 because of not having workers' comp insurance:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 7114#97114
But as of 1/08 it did have an IL license (#4616) and of 11/10 it was still licensed in IL, with no complaints over the past 3 years for intra-IL moves.

--Von Sydow's Moving & Storage, Inc. (Wheaton) in Schaumburg.
This company with DOT #799117 has the website www.vonsydow.com and the phone 847-934-7100. It was an Allied agent for many years but switched to Wheaton in 2009. Its website says that it was founded in 1888. Reportedly it does a lot of corporate account moves. According to www.safersys.org it has 16 trucks. As of 12/10 Von Sydow's had an "A-" BBB rating with 15 complaints in the past 36 months - very high for a company with only 16 trucks - all resolved or administratively closed. As of 11/10 it had 4 complaints with the IL Commerce Commission for intra-state moves over the same period - again, quite a few (most IL companies have none). Pat McLaughlin of the IMAWA has said not to use any complany that has any complaints at all on the ICC website.

Independent moving companies

--Affordable Moving Company, Inc. (independent) in Chicago.
This mid-size, long-established company has MC #463896, the website www.affordablechicago.com and the phone number 773-637-3131. As of 3/08 it had no complaints with the ICC over the past 36 months despite doing almost 2000 moves per year and only 1 BBB complaint in the past 36 months. As of 12/14/10 the number of BBB complaints had increased to 3 with an "A+" rating. Pat McLaughlin of the IL movers' association said the company has been in business for many years and has consistently had a good record. In 4/08 one of the MovingScam moderators talked with the owner of Affordable, Bill Lardner, and was favorably impressed. She also saw the company's nice clean trucks criss-crossing the city when she visited.
"lily" posted that one of her coworkers used and liked this company:

"jvs205" gave it an excellent review for a local move in 1/07:

Earth-Friendly Moving Inc. (Independent) in Naperville.
The phone number for this company is 630-355-6683, web address http://earthfriendlymovinginc.com/ and the owner is Patrick Kuhn. The company uses the DOT#: 2046584 and MC#: 717316. As of 4/11/11 this company has an “A-“ rating with the BBB and 0 complaints over the last 36 months.
In speaking with Patrick, he told me that they handle their moves from start to finish (important as they have control over the move the entire time), and that they are very concious about how they affect the environtment. One unique aspect of this comany is that they have converted several trucks to run on vegetable oil, rather than diesel, as well as using plastic, re-useable, crush resistant containers, staying true to their name.

Shur-Way Van Lines (Independent) in Libertyville.
This company has a phone number of 847-362-2976 and who's web site address is http://www.shurwaymovers.com . The company's DOT is 172887 and MC: 147522. As of 11/5/12 this company has an "A+" BBB rating with no complaints in the last 36 months. No further information available.

--A-Windy City Chicago Movers (independent) in Chicago.
This company used to be a Wheaton agent but as of 2/06 it's not listed on the Wheaton Van Lines website any more. Its phone number is 773-769-8706. As of 1/08 this company had an “unsatisfactory” record at the BBB with 5 total complaints with 3 of them going unanswered in the past 36 months. As of 11/14/10 this had improved to an "A" rating with 0 complaints in the last 36 months.
"Melissa" (an attorney) posted that she had two great local moves in Chicago with this company (she said it was "Jose's team"):
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1217#41217 (local)
She didn't consider using them for her move to San Francisco because of uncertainty as to what Wheaton agent would actual haul her things since A-Windy City wouldn't go that far.
"AnthonyH" posted in 11/06 that employees of A-Windy City stole items from him during a local move:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 5176#75176 (local)

--B & B Movers (independent) in Evanston.
This company has the phone number of 708-491-0395. This company is probably unlicensed. As of 12/14/10 it had an "A+" rating and no complaints with the BBB over the past 36 months.
"Shaun" posted that he was very pleased with them for a move from Evanston to Chicago and then back around 2002. He gave 847-491-0395 as their phone number, which is registered to the owner of the company, David Moore (the area code may now be 708):
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1123#21123 (local)

--Burrows Moving Company (independent) in Chicago.
This is a family-run company that has good remarks by several customers. One person posted that it does do some interstate moves, usually sending a dedicated truck, but I believe it is primarily a local mover. They have been licensed to do interstate moving since 1997. People have said that the company is pricey. It has an excellent website that shows three guys moving a piano at http://www.burrowsmoving.com/piano.html (click on "Grand Piano Moving" at the bottom of the left panel). As of 12/14/10 this company had an "A+" rating and 0 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. A manager, Jim H., posted a comment on Yelp.com in 8/07 giving some additional details about Burrows. Unfortunately, however, someone came on to complain that he called the company and was told that he wouldn't able to afford them!:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/burrows-moving-co-chicago
There are four good reviews of local moves here, by "Guest" (second-hand info), "edie," "mdr," and "BigOldGeek":
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2404 (four local moves)
"BigOldGeek" added, however, that people should have Burrows come to the residence and look at the things to be moved because the truck they sent for one move was almost too small - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 0386#50386 (local)
And "Ilene" posted that she had a bad move with Burrows in 2002 where there was damage and she had difficulty getting her claim paid:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1710#51710 (local)
"Lisa" gave a positive review of Burrows for her move, despite some scheduling problems:

--Bradtke Movers (independent) in Chicago.
See listing under J. Bradtke Antique Movers below.

--Chicago Movers, Inc. (independent) in Chicago.
This company has the website www.chicagomovers.com and Illinois MC #108190. Pat McLaughlin told "lily" in 8/06 that Chicago Movers, Inc. was not a member of the IMAWA and it had 2 complaints with the ICC over the past 36 months. As of 12/14/10 it had 2 complaints with the BBB over the past 36 months with an "A+" rating and 0 complaints with the ICC. It advertises that it can do interstate moves but I can't find an MC number on safersys.org.
"lily" had a friend who had used them with great success 3 times over the past 7 years so she used them for her local apartment move and was very pleased:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9840 (local)

:alert:--Five Star Moving and Storage, Inc. (independent) in Skokie.
BE CAUTIOUS about using this company, which has the MC #390645, the website www.fivestarmovers.com and (according to the IL ICC) the phone 847-329-8899. As of 3/08 this company had 16 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. It was reportedly one of the companies recommended by Pat McLaughlin for a move to NYC in 4/07. However, I personally would not recommend it for a move of that distance, and anyone considering using it should do a search on this website. See discussion here:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13432
As of 12/14/10 the BBB reports that Five Star Moving and Storage is out of business.

--Happ Movers (independent) in Glenview.
Mentioned but little information. As of 12/14/10 Happ had no BBB complaints and an "A+" rating, and the Illinois ICC shows no complaints in the past three years and a total of 1103 moves in 2006.

--Hayes & Sons Moving & Storage, Inc. (independent) in Chicago.
This small company with phone 800-446-4070 and MC #95677 is licensed to do interstate moves. As of 12/14/10 it had an "A-" rating and no BBB complaints over the past 36 months and no complaints with the ICC over the past 36 months.
"Trish_in_Illinois" posted an excellent report on her 150-mile move with Hayes to the Champaign area in 12/06. She said the company was recommended by family members who had used them and she then checked them out with the IL Movers' and Warehousemen's Association, which gave a thumb's up:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10863 (within IL)

:alert:--In & Out Moving & Storage, Inc. (independent) in Lincolnwood.
BE CAUTIOUS about using this company with MC #306319, which has the website www.inandoutmoving.com and the phone number 847-675-9904. According to the BBB, its president is Ariel Hershkovich and as of 4/08 it had 24 BBB complaints over the past 36 months (13 in the past year). As of 4/08 it has 5 complaints on the ICC website:
http://www.icc.illinois.gov/industry/tr ... _nbr=60179
As of 12/14/10 the number of complaints had increased to 25 over the past 3 years.
"Monica" posted in 6/04 that when she called them, "one of their references said they didn't stick to the price given in the binding estimate (so much for the meaning of the binding estimate).": http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1537
Note, however, that a sales rep for In & Out told a MovingScam moderator that the company stopped giving binding estimates based on inventory lists in January 2007. Interstate estimates are now non-binding and the final price is based on the weight. Local moves (within 75 miles of Chicago, generally) are charged for by the hour and estimates for those are also nonbinding in accordance with the IL Commerce Commission regulations.
"chicagolocal" posted in 4/06 that In & Out took something from inside one of his boxes on a local move:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 6707#56707 (local)
"chitoboston" posted in 8/06 he had used In & Out for a 3-block move, and they were "fine" although they charged a lot and had to be watched for overuse of tape and so on:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 7393#67393 (local)

--J & P Moving Service, Inc. (independent) in Lombard.
This company with MC #337820 and legal name Peter West had a very high driver out of service rating as of July 2006. The office is said to be in a strip mall. As of 1/08 this company had an “unsatisfactory” rating with 12 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. As of 12/14/10 the company had an "A+" rating, however they still had 8 complaints in the last 36 months.
"revschwally" described a disorganized move to WI that turned out all right in the end:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8621 (interstate)

--J. Bradtke Antique Movers (independent) in Chicago.
This company has the website www.bradtkemovers.com and the phone 773-478-1911. According to Pat McLaughlin of the IL movers' association, it is a very high-quality company. As of 12/14/10 it had an "A+" rating and no BBB complaints over the past 36 months. Because Bradtke does only intrastate (within IL) moves and does not move people interstate, it doesn't need either a DOT or an MC number. It is licensed in IL with MC #42942 and as of 3/08 it had 1 ICC complaint over the past 36 months. It gets 90% of its business from referrals, In 4/08 one of the MovingScam moderators visited the company's offices (with adjacent warehouse and yard for its five trucks) and spoke at length with the manager, Alan Mitchell, who showed her the originals of the testimonials on the Bradtke website. She was impressed with Alan as a competent, helpful individual and felt that the operation looked completely sound. She also met one of the company drivers, Tommy, who has been with Bradtke for 20 years. As of 4/08, Bradtke's rates for two men and a truck were $95/hour with each additional worker $30/hour and a two-hour minimum. These would also be the rates if they were to load or unload an ABF or Broadway Express truck, which the company IS willing to do and has done in the past. This is a higher hourly rate than some other movers in the city (some advertise as little as $65/hour for two men and a truck), but as Pat McLaughlin says, "You get what you pay for."
We have one rave review by "Helen M." for a local move:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1710#51710 (local)
"Ilene" posted that she had heard many good things about it but its quote came in high for her local move:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1180#51180 (local)

--Joey's Movers & Trucking, Inc. (independent) in Skokie. (Legal name is Joey's Movers & Messenger Service, Inc.)
This company has the website www.joeysmovers.com and the phone 847-674-7779. As of 12/14/10 it had 7 BBB complaints over the past 36 months and no ICC complaints over the past 36 months.
"Kristene" posted in 2/06 that a friend had used them for local moves and liked them:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 3282#53282 (several local moves)
"tfernandez" posted in 4/08 that a client had used them for an interstate move and was happy with them:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 629#106629 (interstate)
However, the company's MC license #300134 was revoked in 1998 and therefore it cannot legally move people interstate:
http://li-public.fmcsa.dot.gov/LIVIEW/p ... ath=LIVIEW

--Lytwyn Movers, Inc. (independent) in Harwood Heights.
This company's phone numbers are listed in different places as 773-348-3078 and 708-867-7095. As of 12/14/10 this company had an "A-" and no complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months. It is probably unlicensed, although in one place it claims to be licensed and insured and lists the IL MC #17614:
http://www.windycitymediagroup.com/gay/ ... hp?OCID=83
"mck3a" used Lytwyn for a local move in 2003 and was very pleased. He said they were "cheap, fast, and very courteous" and a friend had used them several times and was also very pleased:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 6354#16354 (local)
In 10/06 "photo1shot" posted an excellent "out of the blue" review of a local move with Lytwyn that had occurred some time in the past:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 2576#72576 (local)
MusicMom commented on this that according to the IL Department of Corporations, Lytwyn was dissolved in 2001. All in all, the company sounds a bit flaky.

--Macomay Helpers (independent).
This company is probably unlicensed to do actual moves. As of 12/14/10 the BBB has no listing for them.
"jguimond" found them on eMove.com and said they did an excellent job loading his Budget truck in 6/05:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4994 (loading help)

--Minimoves (independent) in Belwood.
This company's phone number is 800-300-6683. As of 8/09 there were three bad reviews as well as a couple of decent reviews of Minimoves on this thread:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=341 (interstate)
People posted that the company "farmed out" interstate moves and damage claims weren't well handled. As of 12/14/10 the company had 22 complaints with the BBB over the last 36 months.

--Moishe's Moving Systems of Chicago, LLC (independent) in Chicago.
Moishe's has the website www.moishesofchicago.com and the phone 866-402-6683. It is OK for a local move in and around Chicago but one of the MovingScam moderators thinks it is somewhat iffy for long-distance moves, although she does not consider it a scammer. Chicago-NY and Chicago-DC are two of its main routes. As of 12/14/10 this company had an "A-" rating and 4 complaints at the BBB and 0 complaints with the ICC in the past 36 months. It is a partner of Northstar in CA, which in the moderator's opinion is also somewhat iffy for long-distance.
It gave someone a lowball quote for an interstate move here -
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2760
There have also been service issues with Moishe's on interstate moves: delivery delays and the driver showing up without a helper. In one case the driver showed up alone in a Ryder truck with a "Moishe's" sign taped on - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6171 (interstate)
See also this report on a move by Northstar and Moishe's -
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 8309#48309 (interstate)
And this report -
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5840 (interstate)
People from the company have also come on the website anonymously to praise their own services, a bad sign. However, when "fresh off the truck" asked Pat McLaughlin about Moishe's, she reportedly said that she'd had better experiences with Moishe's than with Golan's:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 9121#69121

--Northland Moving Corporation (independent) in Chicago.
Someone posted in 10/08 that this company has gone out of business - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 730#118730 Before that, reviews and comments here suggested that consumers should AVOID using this company. It has the website www.northlandmoving.com and the phone 888-957-8877 or 773-907-0001. As of 4/08 the BBB lists 2 complaints over the past 12 months and the president as Al Nujeidat. According to safersys.org it became licensed for interstate moves in 2004 with MC #501441 and a year later that license was revoked for a year and a half. It has a complaint with the IL Commerce Commission for lowballing (bait and switch) and loss of property:
http://www.icc.illinois.gov/industry/tr ... nbr=139344
As of 8/08 it has 1 complaint on www.protectyourmove.gov - http://ai.volpe.dot.gov/hhg/SearchDetai ... d=30996663
"myname" gave the company a good review in 4/08 for a very small move to VA saying there was damage but they were inexpensive and held to their price:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15158 (interstate)
"LizS" posted a bad report in 7/08 saying that Northland brokered out her move to CA to another company without her knowledge. (As of 7/08 Northland does not have a broker's license.) Then the driver held her things hostage for a day saying he hadn't been paid by Northland, and she had broken and missing items on delivery:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16949 (interstate)
As of 12/14/10 the BBB is reporting they are no longer in business.

--North Shore Movers (independent) in Deerfield.
As of 4/08 the BBB listing says that this company has the phone 847- 520-2977; however, mail addressed to them in 2004 was returned unclaimed, so the company may no longer be in business.
"chitoboston" posted in 8/06 that he had used them twice for local moves and they were "fine" but had to be watched for overcharging for tape, etc.:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 7393#67393 (two local moves)

--Plycon Van Lines (independent) in Chicago.
This company was recommended both by All Star Moving in Brooklyn and by a store selling fine furniture in Chicago. Its HQ is near New York City and it has several offices throughout the country, including Chicago. On the thread below, an industry expert commented that Plycon has an affluent clientele; moves fine furniture for dealers, and are expensive. As of 12/14/10 the company had an "A+" BBB rating with no complaints over the last 36 months. A couple of people posted that it didn't return phone calls very promptly.
"Melissa" (an attorney) used Plycon to move a shipment including expensive antiques to San Francisco and had a basically good move with some annoying but fairly minor damage:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5576 (interstate)

--The Professionals, Inc. (independent) in Chicago.
This company has the website www.thepromove.com and a phone number of 773-275-6104. It had 1 complaint with the ICC over the past 36 months. As of 12/14/10 it had an "A+" BBB rating and 7 complaints in the last 36 months. Pat McLaughlin told "lily" in 8/06 that this is a relatively new moving company (about 2 years old), but the owner has demonstrated a good knowledge of the regulations and has maintained a very good record:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 9619#69619

--USA Moving and Storage (independent) in Skokie.
A VERY GOOD PERFORMER with at least 5 good reviews and no significant bad reviews on this website. This company has the phone number 847-673-6301, the website www.usamovingandstorage.com and the MC #297382. As of 12/14/10 it had 0 complaints with the BBB in the past 36 months, and a rating of an "A+".
There are a couple of red flags (Israeli ownership, coupons on the website), but reviews indicate that this company is probably OK for local moves. See the following thread for some additional information about the company:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5525
This was one of the companies recommended by Pat McLaughlin for a move to NYC in 4/07. See discussion here:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13432
As of 8/06 it had no complaints with the ICC over the past 36 months.
USA Moving has several good reviews, all of which appear to be genuine.
"Ilene" said a friend used them for two local moves and recommended them, especially their foreman (Javier):
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 1186#51186 (two local moves)
There are very good comments by "silverbell" who used them for a residential and an office move and was very pleased:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5525 (two local moves)
There is a very good review by "ChicagoGirl" of a local move with them in June 2000:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 7876#27876 (local)
"d-lovely" posted that they had done a good job for him on a local move but they were rather expensive:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8661 (local)

--Wolley Movers, Inc. (independent) in Chicago.
Wolley has the phone number 773-761-8330 and the website www.wolleymovers.com. In 1/08 Wolley had 8 complaints with the BBB over the past 36 months and an "unsatisfactory" rating by the BBB for having one or more unresolved complaints. This company is discussed on this thread, where Tina from the ICC told "Teddy_ted" in 6/05 that Wolley was licensed to do within-state moves. She said that it had 1 complaint with the ICC over the past 36 months (as of 9/06 it still did), but from another MOVER for alleged unfair competition, not from a customer:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4953
"Teddy_ted" subsequently used Wolley for a local move in 6/05 and was very pleased:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5392 (local)
Someone posted an excellent review of Wolley for a local move in 9/06:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9897 (local)
However, "tpress" posted in 10/07 that he was dissatisfied with Wolley for a local move because they sent 3 men for $85/hour rather than 2 men for $65/hour and damaged some of his things:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 9169#99169 (local)
As of 12/14/10 the company had an "A" rating with the BBB and 0 complaints over the last 36 months.

Moving broker

--Betsy's Trans-Pack, Inc. in Chicago.
Betsy is a licensed broker at www.llsol.com/betsy who specializes in booking small interstate shipments. MovingScam normally does not endorse the use of any broker, but Betsy has been recommended both by Burrows and by Patricia McLaughlin at the IMAWA.
"Ronna" was going to use her for a small move but never got back to us to report how it went:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2709 (interstate)
Betsy told another customer ("LauraMar") that she would broker her small load out to North American, which in turn would broker it out to Atlas, but I don't think that Laura used her:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4978 (interstate)
Another customer ("andrea77") posted that Betsy was rude to her:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6171 (interstate)
Another customer ("spumoni44") negotiated with Betsy before going with Armstrong eventually. In that case, Betsy recommended two small companies that Tim Walker checked out with Pat McLaughlin of the IMAWA and found that at least one of them was OK. Details are here:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2900
"Red" reported that Betsy failed to anticipate the need for a destination shuttle on a 9/06 move to Tampa, FL with A-Line Movers (an Indiana company) and then handled things badly:

NORTHERN ILLINOIS

North American Van Lines agents

--O'Mara Moving (North American) in Freeport (also in Madison, WI).
As of 12/14/10 this company had an "A+" rating and no complaints with the BBB in the past 36 months. Pat McLaughlin of the IL movers' association posted that O'Mara is "a good, reputable, family-owned moving company.":
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 2246#62246
There is a complaint about the Madison branch of O'Mara on Epinions - http://www.epinions.com/content_238268878468 However, it's hard to gauge the validity of some of these complaints without knowing the total situation, i.e. the company's side of what happened.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Independent moving companies

:thumbsup::thumbsup:--Broadway Express (independent) in Effingham.
A STAR PERFORMER with at least 20 good reviews and no significant bad reviews on this website. Background, contact information, and multiple rave reviews of its self-haul operation (too many to list individually here) are on its review thread - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1935 This company with website www.broadwayexpress.net and phone 800-962-6683 is in south central Illinois at the intersection of two major interstates: 57 and 70. Although we have no reviews of Broadway as a full-service mover, it did 127 of those moves in-state in 2005 with no complaints. It has a huge warehouse that used to be a cross-dock for Bekins. It was the largest hauling agent for Bekins in the U.S. when it was a Bekins agent. Judging from the mostly rave reviews of its self-haul operation, I believe that it would do a high-quality job as a full-service mover on moves within Illinois.

--Moving Solutions and Boxes (independent) in Litchfield.
This company is reportedly top-rated with 5 stars on eMove.com and services the area between Springfield, IL, and St. Louis, MO. It MAY be connected with a company located in CO - http://directory.uship.com/MovingSolutions/ It MAY be licensed to do actual moves (not confirmed).
"MominTexas" gave the company an excellent review for help on her Broadway Express move in 8/06:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 0306#70306 (loading/unloading help)
Note that one of the owners of a competitor company, Sims (see below) posted on the messageboard in 7/09 that Moving Solutions was no longer in business in Illinois:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 929#124929

--Sims Awesome Moving Company (independent) in Coffeen.
This company reportedly has 4 stars on eMove.com. It has the phone number 217-534-6058. Like many such companies, it may not be licensed to do actual moves.
"MominTexas" gave the company a poor review for unloading help on her Broadway Express move in 8/06, saying that they were difficult to deal with, arrived late, and overcharged her:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9677 (unloading help)
However, one of the owners posted his side of the story in 7/09, and it made sense:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 928#124928

CENTRAL ILLINOIS

"simbha_lion" posted a rave review of Fry-Wagner for his move from Kansas City to TX in 7/07:
Fry Wagner folks as scheduled came on the 17th morning...there was a quality control guy who came along with them and he checked everything to make sure that the company guys followed the move procedure to the dot. They packed everything professionally. They were done in 2 hrs. The move co-ordinated was very good. She called me like every other day to keep me updated about the moved. We received all our stuff on the 24th afternoon. Again the moving co-ordinator kept me posted about the status of my stuff every alternate day. The driver called me a day before and on the morning of the delivery day. They had the stuff delivered and unpacked in two hours. I am glad the move is over and Fry Wagner was awesome. I would definitely choose them the next time I move. Also they were way cheaper than the others. It cost me just $1527 including zero deductible coverage. I know I didn't have too much stuff with me, but their quote was half of what others [Berger Allied and King's North American in Kansas City] had quoted. - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 4107#94107

Berger is Allied's largest agent with 15 offices nationwide. It has a large hauling fleet, so it's likely to move people direct using its own trucks and drivers (desirable). As IMP says in that thread, A. Arnold self-packs and self-hauls using its own crews. The only thing it would "hire out" is the household survey, which would be done by an affiliated company, and extra labor and debris removal when necessary. "IMP" commented further in a Private Message that A. Arnold has a low turnover of employees, a low claims ratio, and a good claims turnaround time.
"ngriffis" gave A. Arnold an excellent review for a shipment from a storage unit in Lexington, KY to central FL. The driver was the same on both ends although some of the crew members were different:

--Paulk's Moving & Storage of New Orleans, Inc. (United) in Jefferson.
Unfortunately, someone posted that the company's New Orleans branch was going out of business in May 2006 because of Katrina:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 8717#58717
It recommended Armstrong in Baton Rouge to someone who called its Mobile, AL branch seeking advice. But it appeared to be in business as of 3/08 when this branch was listed on the www.paulksmoving.com website. "sammyk" was hauled by a Paulk's driver on his move booked by Applegate from NJ to TX and posted a very good report on the move:

Maine is not a regulated state.

Mayflower Transit agents

--Allen's Transfer & Storage, Inc. (Mayflower) in Augusta, Bangor, and Westbrook (Portland area).
This company has the website www.allenstransfer.com and the phone 800-452-1982 (Augusta office). From its website it looks as if it does a lot of military moves. As of 2/28/11 this company had an "A+" rating and 1 complaint with the BBB in the past 36 months.
"minkus" posted in 7/07 that on his move to a southern state, his belongings arrived trashed after spending time in Allen's warehouse. Also, the sales rep made overly rosy promises about transit time:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14458 (interstate)
However, he was happy about the hauler, which was Cook Moving Systems (United), based in NY State.

North American Van Lines agents

--Allen & Coles Moving Systems (North American) in Portland.
This company has the website www.acmoving.com. As of 2/28/11 this company had an "A+" rating with 3 complaints at the BBB in the past 36 months.
"Bean" moving to Oregon complained in September 2005 that his shipment had not even left the Allen & Coles warehouse many days after pickup and his delivery window had been extended from 9/6 to 9/19 (he later found out that it was in transit on 9/6 but he didn't post when it arrived). Note that "ophelia" experienced a similar delivery delay with Allen & Coles in MA on a move to TX at about the same time:

A person posting as "smatwilly" (real name Sherry Williams) is the daughter of the owner. She does sales for the company and has made helpful comments on MovingScam. In 7/08 she posted the following information about the company:

We have a freight company with over 100 drivers & we also have a commercial warehouse . . . We also own a furniture store that sells new furniture as well as does consignment & a records storage & destruction company that pulls in a lot of moves when picking up files & record boxes & putting together racking . . . we handle all the inhouse moves for the hospital here as well as the colleges & a lot of other major accounts. - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 5441#11541

"OutofChaos" posted in 5/07 that he got a "used car salesman" vibe from the estimator, who was inexplicably sent to New Haven, CT by Wheaton to estimate his move to Pittsburgh:
