Quantcast
"You Load/We Drive" moves are usually much less expensive than full-service moves. You control your moving costs by loading your items yourself within the space you reserve. Charges are based on space used and distance traveled; weight is not considered. Because you load your own shipment, you are primarily responsible if scratches, dents, and breakage occur, although your shipment is covered for damage caused by company negligence or catastrophes.
Full service moving companies do the loading, driving, and unloading for you and also pack your items if desired. However, these moves are usually much more expensive than self-moves. Charges are based on the weight of the shipment and distance traveled. Items are covered for damage caused by company negligence or catastrophes and you can also buy enhanced valuation coverage for scratches, dents, and breakage from the company.
Auto transport companies These auto transporters own their own trucks and have their own drivers. They are not brokers that would shop your move to the lowest bidder and keep you waiting until someone agrees to move your car. If you ship your car with them, you can talk to the driver so you will always know where your car is. They are not cut-rate operators, but reviews show that they have performed very well for customers at reasonable cost.
Auto transport brokers do not own their own trucks. They book your car with the actual carrier and charge a small fee (typically $150-$200) to do so. A good broker with many contacts can be very helpful. However, choose one like ProStar that works with high-quality carriers and will not just place your car with the lowest bidder. The broker should also stay on top of your move so you know where your car is and when it will be delivered.
International moving companies arrange for your goods to be seen and measured, packaged, moved to port or airport, transported internationally, and delivered. For safety, be sure that any company you contract with is licensed by the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC).
MovingScam-Approved Companies There are many good moving companies besides the few companies that are formally endorsed by MovingScam. The following companies are properly licensed and insured. They have numerous excellent, believable reviews and few or no complaints, showing that they are committed to providing high-quality moves. They have each assigned a person to help MovingScam customers with any problems that may arise.

In view of this, MovingScam has given these companies its seal of approval. This seal of approval is a step below formal endorsement only because, as van line agents, they are not able to control every move from start to finish, although they are able to control moves that they do using their own trucks and drivers. Especially for the latter type of move, MovingScam.com recommends these companies with confidence.

I tried to find a number to Andy's (I live in Torrance, ca.) information (411) has two numbers one with an address (McDougal) and one without. Is the fact that there are two Andy's a sign to worry? I have an estimate From "Merit Moving Systems" (United-who also has a good track record) and wanted to get one more. Any ideas? Should I proceed with Andy's-they have so many good posts.

Hi - yes, in my opinion it would be good to get a quote from Andy's as well. This is the contact information that I have on file for them:

Andy's Transfer & Storage
3464 N Verdugo Road
Glendale, CA 91208
Phone 800-244-4520
Website at www.andystransfer.com or www.andysmoving.com

"McDougal" must have been a mistake for "Verdugo."

Dear Dianne,
thank you so much. I must mention that until I seen this site, I was on my way for disaster. We have never made an interstate move with a moving company and were clueless. I had signed up for quotes online and the next day had twenty companies to choose from-some of which were on the black list. You have undoubtedly saved us thousands of dollars and much heartache.

I now have two quotes from Andy's (North American Van Lines) and Merit Moving System (United). The salesmen, Jim Smith and John Horist, respectively, were both very professional and thorough.

The breakdown:

Andy's--10, 490 lb with 500 deductible (extra insurance) = $5517.23 (transportation discount-64%)

Merit--10, 619 1b. with 500 deduc. (ex. ins.) = 5380.51 (transportation discount-65%)

Merit did include a refrigerator and microwave that Andy's did not so the weight is basically identical. I believe since the prices are so close and Andy's is so highly recommended, that I will probably go with them.

One Question--Merit's paperwork is a "Binding/Not to Exceed" and Andy's is a "Not to Exceed Proposal" is the wording of these something to be wary of??

I will post throughout the move on my laptop and once we reach our destination (Colorado).

Thanks again!
Joanna

Hi - the NAVL terminology differs from the UniGroup terminology for estimates but both terms you have listed mean the same thing.

Andy's has an A rating from the Los Angeles area BBB and Merit has a BBB rating. I think you would be better off with Andy's in view of that plus the reviews. Do let us know how it turns out.

Why would you go with Andy's? an A and a BBB are just one grade down. It could just be as simple as how long a company has been in business. I'd say go with the lower price. I hate how moving companies rip you off. Twisted Evil

I'm sorry, but that is a poor assessment of how to choose a mover. A higher price is not a ripoff, and why would you choose a worse company just to get a lower price? That frame of mind will only get you trouble.

Why are you visiting us from Sao Paulo, Brazil?

Telling this shipper to go with the lower bid is like sending them to the wolves...People who go with the lower bid later discover that they've been lowballed...from there it's a domino effect and everything begins going south...sideways...or whatever other term you care to use but it's none of it a good outcome for the shipper.
I'm still sitting here wondering if you've spent much time reading these threads and if you haven't, I Exclamation Evil or Very Mad strongly Evil or Very Mad Exclamation suggest you do before offering any other advice to the consumers!!!

I can say as an ex driver for North American that Andy's has always been a topnotch agent.I was always happy to get help from there. The workers and the office staff really seemed on the ball.

You get what you pay for.

Best of luck whichever way you go.

I am choosing Andy's because of the positive posts, a better rating, and because the difference is so minimal-if there were more complete posts of "Merit" from beginning to end, I'd ponder the $100 differnce. However, the way things look-I'd pay an extra $500 to get good service.
Thanks everyone,
Joanna
