Update on move from LA to Austin

Hi there, Here's a quick update of my experience. I would recommend both vendors based on my experiences. Gemini Moving Systems, agent for United Quoted 8500 pounds at @ $4812 with GNTE Actual weight was 7020 pounds at $4112, and husband viewed the weights. My stuff arrived in fine condition, althou...

Re: Need Advice on Estimates for my Move

Hi Austinbound,

I am also Austin bound next week! Moving from LA. Looking forward to a great new city. Good luck with your move, and I hope you enjoy Austin!

Repost--what to look out for on moving day--Please help

I would love tips for what to do to avoid problems on the actual move day. Also, need a clarification on GNTE estimate. I keep seeing in various places that estimates can be exceeded by up to 10%. Does that mean we may need to pay up to 10% more if the weight is over estimate? This is what I underst...

Re: Anyone have any experience with Academy Moving & Sto

Hi Christina, I don't know anything about Allied, but I am just about to move from LA myself. We tried to get a different agent for them who has been reviewed pretty well (Beverly Hills Transfer and Storage), and we couldn't get an estimate from them until 10 days before our move, so ruled them out....

So what should I expect on moving day?

I've researched, vetted, and otherwise investigated everything I can to select the best available option. We are going with a major van line, a reputable agent, and we are packing ourselves except for the furniture pieces that get boxed (mattresses) or wrapped. Now what? I would love tips for what t...

Re: Please help with some quotes for LA to Austin move

Just a quick update. I have decided to go with Gemini, the United agent. Checking on epinions.com I see that United doesn't have the best record, but this agent seems to check out pretty well. I also looked into Broadway Express at the 11th hour, and while it was going to save us a fair amount of $$...

Re: Door-to-Door

We did not use this service, but did investigate it. We found that it would be nearly as expensive as a full-service moving company for our move from Los Angeles to Austin. We would need three crates at a cost of $3700. A full-service van line move would cost us $4121. The delay that we could experi...

Re: LA City Attorney sends Moving Co Owner to JAIL

This is great. I remember reading about one of the companies prosecuted years ago. It took a long time, but they got it done!

Re: Please help with some quotes for LA to Austin move

Hi Michael, Thanks for your comments. I do get what you're saying about the poundage. At this point I think I would only get the estimate to see if someone else comes in with similar weight. P.S. there's a vent at the end you are welcome to ignore. Quick question about the extra valuation over the ....

Re: Please help with some quotes for LA to Austin move

The Blue Chip quote came in at 7998 lbs. with an NTE price of $4121. That does NOT include the cost for a $250 valuation deductible. Gemini was 8500 lbs. with an NTE price (I verified with the estimator that it's NTE and he will change it on the order for service) of $4812. That DOES include the cos...

Re: Please help with some quotes for LA to Austin move

I have the quote from Mayflower/Blue Chip now. The new estimator arrived early--brownie points! Initially they came in with a substantially lower weight than the other two companies (6800 vs. 8000-8500). I questioned this b/c I know that a lot of what I am moving are books and comic books. He agreed...

Re: Please help with some quotes for LA to Austin move

Also, as FYI, I did look into hauling this stuff ourselves in a Penske truck. For a truck the size we need, plus gas, plus extra nights in hotels on the road, the rate comes out to be higher than paying a big mover.

Re: Please help with some quotes for LA to Austin move

Diane, Thanks for your comments. I did research Alex, I did not realize until now that the Van Nuys office and Santa Ana office are the same company. I did read at least one post that indicated they have a good reputation. That's how I decided to even call them in the first place. I realize that pos...
