Re: Moving within Illinois
After further research and several conversations, we now know that it is absolutely true that within a certain milage radius and in certain counties (our move falls in this category), moving is charged by hourly rate, # of movers and transportation fee (in addition to any packing services, permit fe...

Re: Moving within Illinois
We actually will have less overall packing than our previous move. There are a few more furniture items, but no clothes or books.

Re: Moving within Illinois
We initially had called Prager for an in-home estimate, but they don't service the city. They recommended Nelson-Westerberg. The representative seemed nice and informative. He sat down and explained the packet he gave us. He was the first one to tell us that GNTE/fixed prices are illegal for intrast...

Moving within Illinois
My husband and I are moving within Illinois. We were told that GNTE estimates and fixed prices are illegal in the state of IL and that we can only pay by hour. Is this true? If so, is there anything we can do to protect ourselves from getting ripped off? We're going through the same process of havin...

**Review of United: Humboldt & Planes - Boston to Chicago move -excelle
My husband and I moved a 2bdr apt from Boston to Chicago. I had posted earlier regarding different quotes and such. Just thought I'd follow up with our review, as we were very pleased with the move. We decided to go with United Van Lines - Humboldt (Agent in Boston), and Planes (Agent in Chicago). W...

Re: CBS News looking for a moving scam victim
Apparently CBS's Early Show is featuring moving scams and how to avoid them all next week. Tragedy does sell, unfortunately....but at least if people learn from these horrific experiences (just like on this site), we take one more step towards stopping scammers and promoting and rewarding honest wor...

Re: Credit Card Authorization Question
Of course, we would pay for services rendered, even if the move did not go perfectly, and I totally understand that no claim will be processed until the services are paid in full. We'd be using a credit card primarily for the points, but also for some degree of protection in extreme/disastrous situa...

Re: Credit Card Authorization Question
So when I sign that I have received the goods, would it be ok at that point to note before I sign that all boxes externally appear to be in good condition however contents have not been checked? I totally understand that if damage is noted at loading, then this will not be covered. Given that we are...

Re: Coast to Coast (based in NY)?
Interesting - I took these numbers directly from the quote they sent - literally cut and pasted it.

Re: Coast to Coast (based in NY)?
I almost got scammed by these people. I received a quote through one of those online quote search engines that tend to refer you to a cesspool of scammers. Sales rep was "sugar-sweet". Got a full inventory and actually "dissed" in-home estimates saying they do the same thing as I was doing (giving t...

Re: Credit Card Authorization Question
Remember, though, that if there is a claims or delay issue, your credit card company will side with the merchant in most cases. Note that your paperwork will say that all freight charges must be paid prior to any claim being honored. So I get that any additional charges on delivery that are not on ...

Re: Credit Card Authorization Question
I had a question about this too - for an interstate move. We are using a reputable mover highly rated on this site. Full pack GNTE estimate obtained from an in-home walkthrough. I was leaning towards CC, not only because we can get points, but also because if something disastrous happens, we can dis...

Re: Boston to Chicago - what to do with these estimates?
Just wanted to give an update: We have chosen to go with Humboldt/United. While we felt very comfortable with all of the companies that gave in-home estimates, there were subtle differences here and there that made the difference for us. Moovers could not do an in-home estimate, so we decided agains...
