How to Save on Shuttle Fees --> Permits for MovingTrucks

Hi all, been a while! Just thought I'd pop back in to post some information that a friend wanted and Robyn Visser of Stevens requested. This info is for the City of Oakland, CA, but perhaps the process is the same or similar for other cities. 1. Get an Obstruction Permit: We got our Obstruction Perm...

Great info in this thread. Man, did I miss some fireworks in here? I'm searching for that locked thread right now.

Re: Need Moving Company Advice Oakland CA to Dallas TX

Adam Listen to Tim -- he's da man. Don't sign up for any internet thingamadoos. You will get spammed like crazy. Internet brokers will start phoning you from LA and from Florida promising to beat any quote you have already received ("the lowball scam"). Once you get a handle on which movers are heav...

Re: Need Moving Company Advice Oakland CA to Dallas TX

Hey Diane and all yous, Been a while -- buried deep in house projects and trying to find my feet at my new job. Hi Aaron, I interviewed and got quotes from all the heavyhitters -- 7 in all. My final 2 choices were California Movers Express (Stevens) and Chipman (United). In the end, I went with Stev...

Re: Bekins fraudulent claims practices and filing suit

Hi Diane Can you believe that it was a Bekins agent who told me that Allied is called "I Lied" in the industry, while Bekins is known as "Squeakin Bekins"? LOL. Incidentally, Cor-O-Van is known as "CrapOVan." More "nicknames" will be appreciated from guys in the know (like Josh, BigLee, Michael ...)...

Re: Bekins fraudulent claims practices and filing suit

Just 2cents from this direction: Bekins isn't on the new tariff -- they have a modified version of the 400M -- I think they call it the 402 or something like that. It allows them to ding you for extra stairs etc at the destination.

Re: Tipping Good Movers

LOL nice one Diane. 4 guys (including the driver) on the loading side: breakfast, drinks, $20 per guy, and 4 bottles of good booze. 3 guys (including driver, but excluding two day-laborers who arrived late and sucked) at the destination: breakfast, drinks, $30 per guy. Two guys who came to box up ev...

Re: movers are now filing suit against me

I wish I knew more about the law with regard to these issues. The only thing I wished you had done was read posts on this forum before your disaster. The lowball, the inflated charge, HHGHH (household goods held hostage) -- the good folks on this site could've saved you the grief. I'm sure someone w...

Re: A Detailed Breakdown Comparison -- SF to Seattle Movers

Happy New Year everyone! Sorry to have taken so long to get back to the forum, but the move, plus the holidays, plus my University's starting school on Jan 5, all conspired to keep me pretty busy. First, Robyn Visser -- can't say enough good things about her: she is a great agent and interface betwe...

Re: What an Informative Cover Letter Looks Like

Robyn Thanks for allowing me to post your letter. It makes a difference to us naive consumers to see that there are good agents out there. I include Josh and Michael in here, on the basis of their informative and helpful posts. Like Diane, I am a little freaked out about what Josh said -- that there...

Re: What an Informative Cover Letter Looks Like

I will look to Tim and the volunteers for advice on whether or not to modify the letter. I see your point Josh (that's why I worried about it enough to post my second note on whether it was OK), but the letter was posted by request in another thread that, in part, had specifically to do with which c...

Re: What an Informative Cover Letter Looks Like

BTW, Tim, I don't mean this in anyway to be an advertisement for Stevens. If you think it crosses a line, let me know and I'll remove or modify it to your specifications.

What an Informative Cover Letter Looks Like

Hi folks, As promised, here is the detailed cover letter that accompanied the estimate I received from Robyn at Stevens Van Lines. You will not find any new knowledge in it, but from the consumer's standpoint, it is helpful to have all this information upfront and in writing. Robyn was the only one ...

Re: The booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Mo

I'm piping up, humbly, from the perspective of someone not in the industry. I think the idea of regulation does not itself imply in any way that there are no honest, non-scamming moving companies. Just think about the protections we have against police brutality for instance. This doesn't imply that...
