Re: Moving from Shreveport, Louisiana

On an interstate move, you want to check out the van line or carrier they are associated with. Their agency license is only applicable for in-state move. So if they're associated with Allied, and Allied is good, that's what counts? Thanks--I didn't realize that. In that case, I'll consider the two ...

Re: Moving from Shreveport, Louisiana

Hi everyone, I have another question about evaluating movers. One of the movers I'm considering is Central-Herrin Storage & Transfer. They are affiliated with Allied. However, when I check them out on SAFER Web (DOT# 1396798), there' no information: no total number of drivers, zero inspections o...

Re: Moving from Shreveport, Louisiana

Thanks very much for the feedback. And if anyone else knows anything about these movers, even more feedback would be great.

Re: Moving from Shreveport, Louisiana

Diane,

Thanks very much for the response and the link. It's great to see that you're still here helping people out. I'll be in touch with the movers this week to see how their estimates turn out. And I'll certainly be coming back here with more questions!

Thanks again,
-Evan

Re: Moving from Shreveport, Louisiana

Nancy, Thanks very much for the reply. On second look, yes, there is a major difference. Affiliated's estimate lists a $409.50 charge for "Shuttle Service." Is this for using a smaller truck to load my stuff because a bigger one won't fit on my street? If so, I don't think it will be necessary where...

Moving from Shreveport, Louisiana

This site (and its users) was invaluable to me three years ago when I moved from New York City to Shreveport, LA, and I was hoping you might be able to help me again. I'm planning a move from Shreveport, LA to Duluth, MN in late July. I've received estimates from 3 movers as follows: 1. Commercial S...

Follow-Up: My move with A-1 First Class Viking in NY

Many of you were extremely helpful to me when I asked for advice about my move this summer, so I wanted to let you all know how it turned out. This will be a long post so let me start by saying it was a mixed bag, overall. Some good stuff and some bad stuff. How bad they are overall I leave to the e...

Re: Help

Thanks. I didn't know any of that. I'll have to figure out how to handle all of this, including the deposit issue. What you are referring to as an "inventory" is a Table of Measurements or Cube Sheet. This is a tool used by surveyors to provide you with an estimate. Here's where it can get tricky - ...

Re: Help

First, the wrenches are welcome and apprecaited. Since most of what he's told me is okay, part of me is tempted to just close my eyes and not worry about what's questionable. But I know it's better to know about all possible problems in advance, and maybe some of them can be solved. In short, thanks...

Re: Help

I was afraid of something like that. Can you explain what sounds bogus about it, and what I should be looking out for? The pick-up date is July 23 and the move-in date is August 12--from NY to northwest Louisiana. Thanks a lot. Finally, he asked for a $300 deposit and said the rest of the payment wo...

Re: Help

I just spoke with my person at A-1 and I wanted to just post some of what he said to find out if there were any major red flags. I asked him to put the free storage (for a few days) in writing. At first he said that it was Storage in Transit, and that if he put the storage on the order for service h...

Re: Help

Yes, there is something about valuation too--my choice of full value protection or (free) released value of 60 cents per pound per article. I didn't bring it up only because I haven't yet figured out how I want to do that. Thanks for making sure I don't miss a thing. I'll try to get the storage stuf...

Re: Help

Thanks IMP and Diane (and my questions go out to anyone and everyone who's willing to help!). I'll make sure all the blanks are filled in and I'll ask about getting the free storage offer in writing. Underneath the total cost is this sentence, which (I think) explains that it the estimate is BNTE: "...

Re: Help

Diane, Thanks again so much. Flat Rate's binding estimate is $2445. I have mixed feelings about them. I dealt with them for a local move and they were fine. However, I've learned here that interstate moves are a different ballgame, and they do a lot of the things that I'm warned about here. Their es...

Re: Help

I just noticed this post. The movers I met today (A-1 First Class) offered me about a week's free storage along with their BNTE estimate. How much of a red flag is this? Compounding the problem, I contacted Allied for an estimate, and they are sending Bay Shore, which I now read here might be disrep...
