Re: Damage/Loss Claims

Diane, I did purchase the "full value protection" option (with a $250 deductible) as opposed to the $0.60/lb minimum. There is no mention of the rug on the inventory. When I first reported the loss, the driver at first said he remembered it and was going to deliver it while he was still in Southern ...

Damage/Loss Claims

I just had a big household move and I went with a totally reputable, major mover (United) out of Denver. I've moved quite a lot and (luckily) have never had anything lost or broken... until now. I paid for a full-pack, with the expectation that professionally packed boxes and items were guaranteed. ...

Re: Mover Discounts?

Thanks, guys! I don't know how I forgot about the discounted percentage. Maybe just because it seemed so shady that he had just the right discount for someone in my situation and line of work. Diane, last move, I worked with the Chipman Concord agent and my driver's name was Scott; he was great. I d...

Mover Discounts?

Hi, It's been over two years since I've been here and was sad to see that my final update on what happened with my No. Calif to Western Mass. move never ended up on the site. I don't know what happened there. But, in case anyone was wondering, the move in 2004 went great! The load turned out lighter...

Re: CA to East Coast Move: Comparisons

Perhaps that surveyor thought your items were more "bulky" and less weighty. All right, I think I've made the decision and it's going to be Chipman (United) . I think my gut feelings here were pretty accurate. Something seemed kind of "off" about the whole Allied (Sausalito Moving) experience. From...

Thanks everybody for your input, it is really, really helpful!!

IMP, what does that mean about the cube factor?

CA to East Coast Move: Comparisons

All right, I got my four estimates and now I'm trying to make my decision. At this point, I don't know how to make these figures really useful. I'm almost ready to just go by the less scientific vibe I got from each estimator. This may not be completely off base, because I really felt like the Allie...

Re: West to East Move

I've gotten three estimates and my last one (from the much-praised Robyn) comes tomorrow. So far, I think I'm following in Chuck's footsteps. I have to say that of the three estimates so far, I think Chipmans (United) had the best overall vibe. But Bill also made me nervous about Cor-o-van's potenti...

Re: Bay area to NYC askig for a recommendation

Diane, Trust me when I tell you (both as a parent and as UC Berkeley faculty) that you do not want to get the newsletter. Unless you are in the market for used baby clothes or advice on weaning. But, if this still doesn't disuade you, you can register at the site http://parents.berkeley.edu .

Re: Bay area to NYC askig for a recommendation

I'd just like to say that the online Berkeley Parent's Network is a mixed bag. I used their recommendation for a local move (not Delancey Street) and really got screwed! The BPN e-newsletters are often very useful, but the recommendations are not often updated on the site. Their dated messages and r...

Re: Bay area to NYC askig for a recommendation

Chipman of Alameda lists 16 complaints with BBB, which is a relatively high number for a company with only 20 employees. Cor-o-van of San Francisco has a ripoffreport on them on the web, which you can find using google. I do not know if this is the one you are talking to. This may be faulty reasoni...

Re: West to East Move

What does GNTE stand for? I thought guaranteed not to exceed, but I wasn't sure. And what's PBO stand for next to each of the boxes on the inventory?

Re: Bay area to NYC askig for a recommendation

Hi Ed, I'm also moving across the country from Berkeley, although I decided to move after the peak moving period ends after August 1st. (Is that the standard end of PEAK?) I told the Ca. Movers Express that I'd need to ship out the end of the 1st week in August and they said it wouldn't be a problem...

Re: West to East Move Delivery Times?

The only company I've heard of among the ones you're considering is California Movers Express, which had good reviews here from two people posting as "Chuck" and as "ToniCA" (Toni was also considering Cor-o-Van). I was just reading Chuck's detailed breakdown of his move from the Bay Area and he als...

CA to East Coast Move: Comparisons

I'm moving from the SF Bay Area to Western Mass in August and I'm having four estimators coming in the next two weeks: Cor-o-Van (north american van lines), Tri - Valley Worldwide (Bekins), Sausalito Moving & Storage (allied), and (hopefully, as I missed them today) California Movers Express (steven...
