I don't know if you found a broker that gave you an honest recommendation.

You mentioned you want to pack and load. Well, you will be hard pressed to find any carrier that will allow you on their vehicle to load. You should know that is obviously something insurance carriers are not going to accept liability for.

Your best bed is U-Haul or Ryder. And drive it yourself.

I agree with BigLeeCalif ... most moving companies won't allow you to do the work of loading and unloading because of liability concerns. Unfortunately, something like Pods or other similar types of services may be your best bet unless you want to do the driving too, which it sounds like you're trying to avoid.

Also, I'd be wary of going through a broker. They basically just auction off your moving request on a board that bunch of carriers bid on - at least as I understand it. Look for a carrier instead of a broker and you'll probably have better luck and likely save some money. I'd be willing to bet you might be able to find a self packing mover like Pods or Upack that still uses proper suspension and protection to keep all your stuff safe.

If you're doing a self move, all you really need to do is rent a truck, right? Not sure why you'd get a broker involved in that situation. In my experience, a once over with a normal vacuum seems to work just fine.
