MovingScam.com has decided to endorse the Michigan offices of Corrigan (United) because of the many favorable reviews and comments about those offices here and elsewhere. It’s Toledo OH, Chicago and Rochester NY locations have only a few reviews posted, but they also have good BBB ratings and internal quality scores from the van line, so MovingScam.com is endorsing them as well.

The company, lead by third generation operators David and Michael Corrigan, has 12 Midwest locations, 600 employees, 100 long distance drivers, 500,000 square feet of warehouse and more than 10,000 moves annually. Locations include:

Only the Farmington Hills, Bay City, and Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo locations are listed by the BBB. As of 11/10 the Farmington Hills and Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo locations had an A+ BBB rating with only a total of 4 BBB complaints in the past 36 months, all resolved or administratively closed (excellent for a company with 186 trucks that reportedly does more than 11,000 moves a year). As of 11/10 Corrigan had no complaints listed on http://www.protectyourmove.gov and four of its offices won 2010 Customer Choice Awards from United Van Lines for having the highest customer satisfaction rating among agents. The Bay City and Auburn Hills offices were winners and the Farmington Hills and Rochester NY offices were runnerups. In addition, the Novi office of Premier Relocations LLC, a Mayflower agency owned by Corrigan, was a 2010 Customer Choice Award winner.
In November 2010 a company representative told MovingScam that in the last 12 months, Corrigan as a whole handled 11,081 household shipments and had 638 claims, giving the company a claims ratio of 1 claim in 17 moves (5.8%). Although unverified, this is extremely low in an industry in which the AMSA has said that the average claims ratio is 1 out of 4 moves (25%). It may reflect the fact that Corrigan reportedly self-hauls 80% of its shipments using its own trucks. Corrigan had one complaint on RipoffReport many years ago, but this appears to have been an unintentional service failure and the General Manager, Nate Corrigan, came on that website to offer to make amends. Although Corrigan reportedly does only a small number of military moves, all of its warehouses are military-approved, a measure of quality.
Corrigan was highly recommended by "Michael," who worked for the Farmington Hills branch for 5 years. "Eric" gave Corrigan a rave review for his move to Raleigh, NC, in 6/06. Even though his things had to be transferred from one trailer to another and there was minor damage, he said that the driver (Chris) was excellent. "dave_261" gave Corrigan an "8 out of 10" for his move to Raleigh, NC in 8/06. His move was booked through Consumers Relocation (AAA) by East End Moving in Rochester, NY, which is owned by Corrigan. Delivery was very fast and there was only very minor damage. "mi2kshop" posted that there was an overflow situation with his 8/06 move to the DC area so items had to be picked up later, and then the final bill was $1000 more than it should have been. However, Corrigan corrected the billing error. He gave the company a B-/C+ overall. However, Corrigan may have been just the booker and not the hauler, in which case the van line bears some responsibility for the problems:

"jamcracker" reported a bad experience on his move booked by Corrigan-Farmington Hills to NC in 8/08 - boxes of fragile electronics were turned on their sides and heavy book boxes were loaded on top, so there was damage at delivery. Would definitely recommend this mover!

I was very nervous about getting scammed for my move, and movingscam.com was very helpful in providing valuable information. I was paying for the move myself, and wanted a good deal, but also wanted to have my stuff taken care of. I thought about ABF and Broadway Express, but I did not want to load and unload myself, and the price difference wasn't worth it. ABF quoted $2300 and Broadway Express quoted $2100. I got three in-home estimates (United Van Lines, Atlas, Wheaton), and ended up choosing Corrigan Moving Systems with United for several reasons:

1. Excellent reviews here (though there aren't that many)
2. Corrigan have an office based in Ohio, where I am moving. BBB endorses them and said they didn't have any complaints since 2008. All previous complaints were resolved professionally.
3. Corrigan were very responsive, and willing to work with me on price. It was almost $1000 less than the other companies' quotes, even if I had to shuttle at origin and destination. They also do not charge for destination shuttling.
4. United Van Lines is a large and reputable

Corrigan did not disappoint, and I am extremely satisfied with the move. There was a question about requiring a shuttle at origin, but they did not put it on the original binding not-to-exceed estimate in case I did not have to use it. They did provide me with a quote of how much it would cost (about $350 extra). My driver arrived the day before with his truck to figure out where he might be able to park it and not charge for the shuttle. Amazingly, he found a space, and saved me $350. He arrived at both the origin and destination exactly within the one-hour window he said he would with his help. He also called me the day before he arrived to confirm the timing. I had an 8-day window for the arrival of my stuff in Cincinnati, but the driver gave me a day within that window at origin, and stuck to the schedule. My stuff ended up being 3000 lbs instead of 2750, but Corrigan honored the not-to-exceed estimate and did not charge me extra. I packed 50 boxes myself, and they wrapped and disassembled/reassembled furniture. Nothing was lost, and the only thing that broke was a wire fruit rack, and that was because it was packaged poorly by me. All of my large glass frames and mirrors were intact. The driver and his help were professional, efficient, and were careful with all of the stuff. I would definitely use them again the next time I have to move.

It's a shame that this company was endorsed by MovingScam.com. My wife and have moved 5 times in 7 years and our last move was using Corrigan here in Michigan.

Net result?

They did far and away more damage to our belongings than all the other companies COMBINED.

They broke the frame for our TV, they mis-packed a glass front cabinet that shattered and had to be tossed out. They chipped all kinds of corners and finishes off all kinds of furniture.

When packing the truck they took things marked fragile and put them on the bottom of the stack!!

Also packed boxes clearly labeled NOT to pack in the truck.

Whether loading or unloading both crews were certainly fast -- but certainly very casual and careless with our things.

And to top it off -- I didn't take the replacement insurance. So I only got $.60/lb for the damage. THAT is certainly not a mistake I'll make again.

So my advice is to NOT endorse this company -- and if you're planning to move -- certainly use someone else. ANYONE else.

You'll be happy you did.

As to the comments above -- I did get my insurance check at $.60/lb. Based on that though every future move I'll use replacement value insurance.

Regarding the above post of 80 years of service, I'm happy they've been around that long -- but I can only discuss my own experience with the company. In no way can I speak to all the years they've been in business. Nor am I trying to "undo"anything as I've not been moving or even around for 80 years.

It's good that others have had positive experiences with Corrigan, however I have not, and am being honest and truthful about what happened.

My husband and I moved from Chicago (city) to Charlotte in July and had a GREAT experience using Corrigan Moving Systems/United Van Lines.

My estimator was Beth Corrigan. She was on time, polite, and thorough with your inventory process. This was our first interstate move and I had a lot of basic questions. She was very good about answering all of them.

I received my quote, which was a few hundred dollars more than another estimate I received. But, the delivery window was MUCH shorter than the other estimate (6 days vs 2.5 weeks). I should also mention that I called some other moving companies and they indicated they don't do Chicago moves within the city limits.

My move coordinator Lindsey was great with answering questions via email prior to my move. On the day of the move, my crew was on time (3 ppl to pack and move a 2 bd apt). They were great at packing -- very careful and everything got packed except for a few flammable things. They were done with everything in about 6 hours later. I tried to help, but I realized I was just in their way.

Our items arrived right in the middle of the delivery window. That crew was not as efficient as and didn't seem as careful as the Corrigan crew, but no issues occurred. They were on time and unprofessional. It was really hot out and they did not complain one bit.

Two items did not arrive with our delivery and I had to file a claim. We had so much stuff, that I was not surprised that two small items were lost. Plus, they did a fair job with the claim.

I would definitely recommend Corrigan. They made the process pretty easy for rookies.

I recently had most of my house moved to Florida from Michigan. My timeline was very fluid and uncertain. Corrigan worked with me and when I said "how about his day?",they were more than accommodating. They sub contracted PLANES moving out of Ohio. They also went out of their way to make the delivery date that was convenient for ME. Both companies were constantly in touch . Planes moving arrived EXACTLY when they said they would. The crew was professional and extremely efficient. My belongings arrived in Florida intact and again EXACTLY when they said they would be there. This was my first major move out of state and I was very nervous about the timing. Both companies were awesome and I highly recommend both!!

They sub contracted PLANES moving out of Ohio.

This was not a subcontracting situation.

You moved with United Van Lines and they are both agents for them. So it was under United Van Lines DOT that the move was done under. This is normal. You usually have a Booking Agent, Origin Agent which could be the same along with the Hauling Agent, and a Destination agent. Very rarely is it all one agent on both ends but it is possible.

You should also get a survey from them to fill out. Please fill it out. It is taken and compiled by an independent company to ensure your thoughts are heard. If there was someone outstanding, let them know on the survey. These agents and the system rely on feedback by the customer good and bad.
