Hi,
we are looking at moving form Montreal, Canada to the Bay Area, California, at the end of June. 2 bedroom apartment with stuff for 2 people.
I've been looking at pages and pages on this web site, and found people recommending AMJ Campbell and Brytor, but would like to know what other companies you can recommend so I can get in touch w/ them and ge ta couple of estimates to compare.
Thanks
Move from Montreal to Bay Area
Re: Move from Montreal to Bay Area
I moved from Montréal to Switzerland in 2008 and here are the companies I evaluated and for which I had a OK-to-good feeling:
- Brytor International Moving
- Europack
- Stevens International
- Taylor International
- The MIGroup
- Tippet-Richardson
Some of them were much more expensive then the others, but this might have changed in the last four years.
We ended up moving with Tippet-Richardson; you can read about my experience in this post.
Good luck with your research!

DO NOT SHIP WITH THIS COMPANY
This company cancelled my shipment 3 days before pick up and took $400 US of my money.
They take no responsibility for the sales team's negligence and lies - I was given poor information what looks to be so they can just keep my deposit.
STAY AWAY FROM THE SHIPPING COMPANY!
They will steal your money and leave you to try to pick up the pieces... THEN they send the LEAGL TEAM to clean up.
Seriously, DONT USE THE SERVICE, find a reputable business.

Question for you?
Did you pay for the deposit via credit card?
If so, you have a right to tell your credit card company that you are disputing the charge because NO SERVICE WAS DELIVERED.
It is only legal for a company to retain your deposit IF YOU DEFAULT ON THE AGREEMENT.
Have you moved yet?
I would say you don't want to take chances with generic movers when moving across the border to the US. The reason is exactly what you have described. There are numerous companies that make extra money setting up, cancelling, and then keeping deposits.
All of the major van lines have branches in Canada. You are not going to get a move for a ridiculously low price because there are things not associated with local moves. You have customs declarations and things required to make sure no living plants, fruit or other things are brought aross the border.
Those van lines do this every day so they will be able to give you honest service.
