Moving only 60 lbs of personal items from Chicago to Melbourne?

Postby ChitownGirl » Mon Aug 21, 2017 7:02 pm

Hi all

I have to move about 60lbs of personal items (clothes, shoes, books etc) from Chicago to Melbourne in a few months.

So far the only quotes I have are:

1) White Glove--$220 for each 20lbs box
2) USPS--$70-100 for each $10lbs box

Is there a cheaper and more effective way to move my stuff?

Thanks

I'd also recommend looking into FedEx and UPS. Most moving companies won't touch an order unless it's over 2000 lbs, because it's not cost effective for them to do so.

Could be one of the interntational volunteers has a better suggestion, so stay tuned!

Great question! Let us know if you have any more.

Check the cost of bringing extra luggage with you on the airlines. If you have 60 LBS< that is two suitcases or boxes, which would fit into the normal size and weight limits of most airlines.

Other than that, work with a known parcel shipper, like UPS, Fed-Ex, or DHL.

Expect to pay some fees on the other side on top of what the parcel shipper quotes. Shipments to Australia are almost always subject to either quarantine, fumigation, or both.
