Not quite on-topic but could use some advice post moving

Hello!

In a few weeks I'll be moving to America, NY specifically. I was wondering how income tax works over there? If I understand correctly a majority of people here are from the US so it'd be super useful if I could throw a quick question at you all!

I'll be in America for 3 years, maybe a few more if my contract is extended. In the UK I use this salary tool so I know my exact numbers before I get my payslip (useful for me as I'm currently self-employed). Is there something similar in the US? I'm a little unsure how tax works over there as it differs by state.

Anyone got some advice/good sites to take a look at?

Sorry for the delayed reply. I've been out of the office for a few weeks.

I'm not sure if you could have picked a more complicated question to ask. None of us here are tax experts, and taxes in the US are quite complicated. My best suggestion is to talk with your HR person when you get to your new job. They should be able to tell you which taxes you will be subject to, and if you are exempt from any (such as Social Security). If your HR person isn't available, you can go down to your local IRS office and they have books there that can tell you exactly what your taxes will be, based on your income.
