Gotta love their web page that shows a freight truck for their long distance moving as well as quoting by the cubic foot. 8)

Personally - I'm enamored with the stock photo for customer service - have seen that one on everything from superstore chains to cosmetic company and eve (choke) other moving companies' websites.

But the winner is . . . . . . and now I am SURE they will take it off their website as it is no longer true - this quote:

"Never mentioned on Movingscam.com and no records with BBB.org"
There are still good people who move good people.

Give up on the find-a-mover sites. The interstate household goods motor carrier authority that CargoTaxi claims (MC 359542) was filed under the name of General Moving Systems in April, 2000 and revoked in May, 2003. General, incidentally, is known to the BBB.

Check here for some of the comments about companies located in the greater NYC area. You'll have to scroll down for movers that operate from Staten Island. American Home and Victory are two good places to start.

thanks. I have narrowed it down between Kens Moving in queens and Big Apple moving in brooklyn.

I need to move on a Sunday so American Home was too expensive at $180/hr.

Kens quoted $110/hr for 4 men plus 1.5 hr travel time about 7-8 hrs needed

Big apple quoted $134/hr for 4 men, no travel time. 7-8 hrs needed.

Others that I thought were too much were:

Moishe $159/hr for 4 menplus 1 hr travel

Shea Moving $175/hr 4 men

Michaels Movings $153/hr for 4 men (Sunday rate) $125/hr regular day.

$110 per hour for 4 men...on a Sunday...in New York City? Be sure to report back on how satisfied you were with the service.

Which one of them came to do the in-home survey and provided you with a written estimate? Even local movers do that.

Don't get too comfortable with your choice just because no one here threw up a red flag. No news could be good news. But is might also mean that no one from New York has made any reports - positive or negative.

At $27.50 per man per hour on Sunday, each crew member is probably making about $10.00/hr without any benefits - far less than the prevailing overtime wage in the market. That in itself should make your leery.

They all offered, but I chose not to. I am moving a lot of the smaller boxes, etc prior to the movers getting here. I have lots of crap and am trying to speed up the process. Moving a 4 bedroom apartment with a whole storage room makes for lots of boxes.

If I would have someone do estimate, inventory would change come moving date.

I will take my chances with Kens. Will report back Monday or Tuesday when I get a chance.

Hopefully all goes well and GIANTS win to finish off a good day.

Well, I guess I will be the test for Kens. I will post a full review sometime next week.

just asked Kens for a fax copy of confirmation estimate

Here is their catch:

6 hrs $110 per hr
2.5 hrs travel time
2 mirror boxes $56
20 rolls of tape $80
fuel $25
tolls $18

total $1113
6 hr minimum
so average would be $185.50

On the phone I was told $110/hr with 1.5 hrs travel time and no charge for tape or blankets or pads.

I dont think this is worth it. I can go with the better reviewed companies for that price.

Going with Big Apple at $134/hr. I guess you guys were right to be leery.

thanks

I would inquire on the materials charge - because those things are always quoted seperately. On a local move, I would not expect a fuel charge (that's why there's such a thing as travel time; if they charge fuel and travel time.....scam). Also ask about your tolls - make this a true apples to apples comparison. I'm not saying you should keep Ken's in the running because I never believe the cheapest quote will end up being the cheapest in the long-run. Just make certain your comparison is true.
