Mistake? What Now?

Postby MojoAustin » Thu Mar 26, 2009 8:44 am

I think I may have made a mistake, though I am not sure. Prior to finding this site and reading on here I started talking to several movers I found over the internet. Yesterday, I put a 10% deposit with a company, that I felt okay about until I read all the do's and don'ts and feel like I've done several don'ts.

The company is called Allied Moving Group DOT 1840024 located in New Jersey. There licenses and insurance all seem to be up to date.

They want me to do an inventory and they will give me a NTE contract. I spoke with 2 references that had positive things to say.

What are the pitfalls with this type of contract, is there anything I can do to mitigate those issues?

We want to move in 3.5 weeks (moving from DC area to Austin, Tx)

What should I do?

Read your contract and see if you can cancel as long as it's before X days before pickup.

Only book with a company that will come and do an IN HOME estimate for you.

I can cancel and get the deposit back up to 72 hours of the move date.

I keep on seeing only get one that will do an in-house, I see that is a mistake I have made, but I would prefer to stay in this contract if there is some way for me to mitigate the risks... what are the risks?

If they require a deposit your chances of being scammed go thru the roof.

Get your deposit back and only deal with companies local to you, that will give you an in home estimate . Ask for a "not to exceed" estimate.

The risk are too high to take a chance on a company that wants to do everything over the phone. They will give you a ton of reasons why they don't need to come out and do a visual survey for you, so they can up the price after loading your goods.

They prey on nice people like you

If you're in Washington, it doesn't make sense to use a company in New Jersey. chptrkrules is right; use a company that is local to you. It's also bothersome that with their name, they're trying to confuse the issue and sound like Allied Van Lines...a lot of scammers do that.

I just noticed the name. Rick is correct. They are using a name similar to a legitmate big time moving company.

They do this with the intent on decieving you, which tells me they are scammers. Run away from this company before it's too late.

Someone who post here uses the tag "New Jersey is the cesspool for scumbag movers" or something close to that.

Where can I find a local company? Something said to use the phone book, but I don't even have one, and the one's I have seen are mainly scams themselves!

I only have 3 weeks and thought everything was set. I also am going to have to fight to get this guy off my back and my money back... at least it was only $120

Call Perry Moving and Storage in Baltimore. I believe they cover DC. They are the Local agent for National Van Lines.

Others here will be able to give you legitmate options as well.

go to www.unitedvanlines.com, www.allied.com, www.atlasworldgroup.com, www.mayflower.com, www.bekins.com, www.navl.com, or any other major carrier's website and find an agent in your area and have them give you a free, in-home estimate ASAP.

I also agree that Perry would be an excellent choice to contact for a quote. I had a chance to deal with the owner Richard personally and he is a class act. I was an agent for National Van Lines before that comes into question but I am no longer in the business.

MOJO, since you are based in the Metro DC area I am going to recommend Interstate Van Lines, I represent them here in the Florida panhandle, they are based in Springfield Va and you can visit their website
www.invan.com and you can contact them at 1-8oo-336-4533
the other people who replied to your post gave you some very good advice also along with some good van lines too.
