Any new recommendations for extra-small moves?

Postby Lilac » Fri May 17, 2013 7:49 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm really grateful for everything I've learned so far on this forum--thank you! I have a very small estate inheritance (aprox. 500 lbs or less) that I'm looking to move from Washington to Pennsylvania: one full-size bed (no mattress), a three drawer dresser with detachable mirror, and four boxes of dishes. I've been investigating lots of the small movers, but I'm hoping for some updated recommendations. Current options:

Transit Systems (TSI) from Wayne, PA: Not finding many reviews here, and it checks out ok on the US DOT site) BUT it has lots of good "reviews" on MoverReviews.com, which I now understand should be taken with a grain of salt. And then seven reviews on Yelp absolutely trash it... I'm also skeptical because it's my lowest bid.

ShipSmart from Aptos, CA: Mixed reviews on Yelp and one bad international review from 2012 along with older reviews on this forum. Any recent thoughts? Also, a fat C+ from BBB; a few complaints in the database from protectyourmove.gov. Gentle Giant movers recommended them, though.

"Small Move Specialists" small-move.com (from Maryland?): Spoke to Rich Tucker. Hard time finding much info on them but proud of their moverreviews...

Navis: Looks solid, but the $1600+ quote was out of my price range (I know it would be a lot more to rent a truck cross-country, but my "inheritance" didn't come with any money!)

Xpress Movers: don't work in the Pacific NW

American Minimovers: Mixed Yelp reviews and just a few mentions here...

Any advice/recommendations would be much appreciated! Our time frame is flexible, and both pick-up and drop-off are a few hours from the major cities (Olympic Peninsula and central PA). Thanks so much in advance!

The only one I ever had personal interaction with was ShipSmart. We used to refer the moves like yours to them, and we never had any complaints from shippers.

Thanks, BLC! No one small mover was coming out on top, so any positive reinforcement helps. I'm not super-worried about the BBB because that's complaints over the last three years and they're a larger company. (If anyone thinks I've being naive, though, let me know.) Also, I know Diane used them for her daughter in 2005; again, I was hoping for some more recent updates...

Another thing to consider is that a lot of van lines now sell a small shipment program, which is something you might consider.
