Moving from the Detroit area to Wilkesboro NC. Any ideas?

Postby billnthelma » Wed Nov 16, 2005 8:43 am

Hi Help we need a good full service mover.
We are moving very soon from Detroit to Wilkesboro NC which is in western NC. We have a small load, 1 bedroom, living room dinning room, and office. We need a full service mover. Job schedules are too tight to move ourselves. Any experiences with a similar move?
Any help pointing us in the right direction will be appreciated.

OK, I have 3 estimates lined up.
Bekins All around moving.
DMS Moving System (Agent for Atlas van lines).
GMC Campbells moving and storage.

Any comments?

Hi - I don't know anything about those agents, but you should really send a Private Message to "Michael" to ask his advice. He is one of our core volunteers. He lives in Raleigh and he also has a lot of experience with Michigan. To send a PM, find a post by him and click on the "pm" button below the post. A blank screen will come up for you to input your message.

I would drop bekins and GMC and stick with DMS of those three. I would also suggest calling Corrigan Moving Systems in Farmington Hills and Palmer Moving North American.

Bill,

Having worked in Michigan for over 6 and a half years, I know the quality of the other three companies (DMS< Corrigan and Palmer).

Bekins quality was horrendous most of the time and GMC Campbells I have never heard of.

Best of luck,
Michael

Hi So far we have 2 estimates.
One from DMS / Atlas 5500 lbs.
And one from Corrigan / United Van lines 5222 lbs.

Neither extimate was a firm "not to exceed" price.
Both said the final price would be based on actual weight.
Is this the way to go?
How do I verify the weight?

Should I consider buying the extra insurance offered by Corrigan?

Palmer is comming out monday to give an estimate.

How are we looking?

So far so good. The weights are in line.

But what did each include aside from weight.

What were their discounts? What did the cost include, service wise, valuation wise.

If Brian from DMS came out to give you the quote, he hardly ever gives Not to Exceeds, or in Atlas' case APP. He is very accurate with his quotes.

But it would never hurt to ask either of the two for not to exceed quotes. You should establish that at the time of the survey prior to them doing anything.

Best of luck,

Michael

Just a quick update.
We chose DMS / Atlas.
The weight estimate was very close.
A little high actually, so the final cost was under the estimate. around $2100
Very professional driver.
Very carefull inventory and record keeping.
Pickup and Delivery on schedule.
Good experience.
Thank you to all on this forum who helped.
The peace of mind and confidence we got from being informed consumers was priceless.

Thanks for this report. If you could give contact info for DMS (address, phone number, etc.) plus the name of your sales rep and driver it would help others. Was this a self-haul, i.e. did a driver from DMS haul the shipment in a DMS truck?

DMS is an agent for Atlas.
The move was in an Atlas truck and Randy Marcum who works for Atlas was the very professional driver.
The DMS number is 800-521-5225
and Brian Robinson was the Sales Rep.
