Large varying estimates and anyone know about Pool's Moving?

Postby mhedstrom » Fri Jun 30, 2006 7:16 pm

Hi all,

In our quest to move from San Jose to Colorado we've gotten quotes from a couple different agents: Pool's Moving and Storage (Allied) from Turlock, CA, and Rossiter (United) out of Livermore.

I can find absolutely no information anywhere about Pools. They're not BBB members - is that because they're part of Allied, and web searches are coming up nil. They don't do their payments based on weight. They gave us an estimate based on what they saw in home, and then 2 days later I got an email saying "oh the rates are lower for that time of the month" and the estimate dropped about $500.

Rossiter came out and did their estimate, and it's literally $2000 more than Pool's. I understand they probably overestimated a bit in the hopes that when the final weight comes in we'll pay less, but that seems like a huge difference. I've found a lot of information about them, some good, some bad.

Does anyone know anything about Pool's, and should I be concered that there's such a large variance in the estimates?

Allied agents usually give TPG (Total Price Guarantee) estimates, which are Binding estimates, and my understanding is that they often don't weigh the truck. They use a tariff (price list) which is different from the 400N tariff used by most other major van lines.

I don't think there's anything to worry about in terms of the estimate, but if you want more information about the quality of the agent, you could send a Private Message to "PMueller" who works for Allied in FL. She can look up Pool's internal quality ratings for you. Their not being a BBB member is nothing to worry about.

Out of curiosity, where did you see the bad comments about Rossiter?

Thanks Diane. I saw some on these boards actually, and by doing random web searches, although I'll have to admit the majority of stuff I've seen has been pretty good.

Nothing against the company in Turlock, but you have Allied agents closer to you in the San Jose area, and even in Hayward, San Leandro. And clarify this, did the agent from Turlock actually come out, or give you a phone estimate?

Turlock is 102 mi from San Jose, and unless they have a sales person in your area, I can't see them sending someone to San Jose for a visual unless they are almost assured that it's a booking.

Rossitor is fairly close, but you have several quality van lines represented in San Jose. One caution though, and that is most scam companies in the Bay Area are in San Jose, so I would stick to well known names.

I posted a request through the Allied site, and they sent it to the people from Pool's. They came out for a visual estimate - no way I would rely on a phone estimate. Same thing for Rossiter - I submitted a request through the United site, and that's who they sent it to.

Should I be at all concerned about the huge difference in estimates, and the fact I can't find out anything about Pool's?

As I said, contact Pam Mueller to see what she knows about Pool's. Following this messageboard over the years, I've noticed that in many cases the agent that a van line will refer people to via the Internet is one of the weaker agents in the area. This may or may not be true in your case, but just a head's up.

I also checked Allied's web site, and Nor-Cal came up under your zip code.
Norcal has an office on Trimble Road. and there's also Golden Gate Allied in Menlo Park.

I tend to agree with Diane on Pool's. I checked the CMSA (California Moving & Storage Assn.) membership roster and Pool's is not included.

Perhaps they are a newer agent, but it disturbs me that they don't belong to the CMSA.

Nor-Cal has a pretty large hauling fleet of their own, so you might want to consider whether Pool's would be capable of a self-haul, or would they have to rely solely on Allied to do the work.

I don't know if Allied has satellite agents that do strictly booking; Arpin and Burnham used to have sales offices that only booked .... they used to be known as company stores.

Thanks guys, I did get info back from Pam, and they got a very high rating in the past year from customers (4.59/5). They don't do their own hauling, but rather get Allied drivers, but all the drivers have gotten "very good" or "excellent" and apparently Pool's stays in contact with them.

I too noticed they weren't members of the CMSA, and was wondering if that's because they don't do a lot of in-state hauling? They're also not BBB members which concerns me almost more, but they are part of Allied so that may have something to do with it.

I'll give Norcal a call too, I was really wondering why Allied snagged someone in Turlock for our move.

That is a very high quality score. Pool's is sounding better to me now. As for not being a member of the CMSA, a very strong United agent in the Los Angeles area, Gemini Moving Specialists, is also not a member of the CMSA. And many reputable companies choose not to pay membership dues to the BBB. I notice that it has no complaints over the past 36 months.

You can see a little bit of information about Pool's by inputting its MC #157454 on the Licensing and Insurance part of www.safersys.org. Its interstate licensing probably became inactive when it became an Allied agent. It looks as if there is a related company that does auto transport.

Please do. I've been wondering about that. When I called the CMSA anonymously a while back and asked their opinion of Gemini, the person said, "They choose not to be a member and we have no information."

Hmmmmm.

Interesting.. I have met and talked to Doug Hill many times, so if there's a reason I am sure he would be candid.

In fact, he has asked me to send him my resume so he can see what's available for me.

It wasn't Doug Hill who told me that but a newly-hired receptionist.
