CT MOVE TO NC - Joyce or Vanguard?

Postby CONFUSION » Fri Jun 02, 2006 3:48 pm

I am planning a move from CT to NC. Has anyone had recent experience with either Joyce (www.joycevanlines.com) or Vanguard (www.vanguardmoving.com)? Both seem to have decent reviews on the discussion boards. I have recieved in home estimates from both; the weights were off by 800 lbs. Is this a red flag? Additionally, the estimator from Joyce quoted me a cheaper rate at 4000lbs rather than his estimated 2900 lbs, so the estimate was made with a 4000lb weight, rather than the smaller weight. How is a significantly heavier move cheaper? Has anyone ever run across this before? Any answers would be appreciated.
Thanks
Confused. :?:

Confusion,
i myself will be moving from Ct to NC too and i am as confused as you are. Maybe we can help each other. One local company I was told about is Miller Brother (United Van lines associated). I can give their number if you want to try them. My real estate agent told me about them and I did ask a couple of coworkers who knew or used them.

An 800-pound difference on a 2900-pound shipment is significant but not something that should alarm you. Normally it's good if estimates don't vary by more than 10%, which would be about 300 pounds in your case, so your variance is a little high.

Transportation charges for shipments go down (per pound) as the size of the shipment goes up. Either the Joyce estimator was trying to save you money, or else Joyce has a 4000-pound minimum at this time of year, or else the estimator was trying to make the shipment look larger so it would be more attractive to a driver (this last possibility is unlikely, since Joyce uses company drivers).

You can search on Joyce in the Quick Search box above to see what has been said about Joyce here.

Be careful not to take realtors' recommendations as gospel since many of them know about local moves but not about long-distance moves, and also some of them get monetary consideration for recommending certain companies.

i wanted to report here that my move with Joyce Van lines went very well. They picked our stuff on time and delivered it on time also. the day of pick up everything was loaded before noon. The crew was wonderful. I would recommend Joyce Van Lines to anybody planning to move.
