Humboldt (United) Boston to Austin (They were great w/move)

I just want to give my recommendation for Humboldt Storage and Moving Company located in Canton, MA. They moved me from Boston, MA to Austin, TX and the staff were courteous, efficient, and helpful (David MacDonald, Jacqui Yarrell, Tim, AJ, Kevin, and Tony and his wife). I had my things picked up 8/14/06 and I received them 8/22/06. The price was reasonable, but definitely I would recommend that people let them pack, because I did it on my own and it was stressful and the packing supplies I bought came up close to what it would cost me to just have them pack, plus they would have completed it faster. Further, I labeled my boxes to what room they will go, and that helped the movers.

I am now finished with unpacking and this experience was definitely great and gave me the peace of mind to start my new life in Texas stress-free..yeehaw!.. If anyone have questions, please feel free to contact me. Thanks.

Hi Diane,

My final weight was 2040lbs. at a price of $2360.75 (that is with full insurance coverage, parking permit, and shuttle) (I paid by cashier's check); the initial estimate was $2663.13 at 2160lbs (they weren't too far off). I was also considering Rainbow (they predicted close to the same amount) but Humboldt was more professional and knowledgeable during the in-house survey, so I opted with them. I was worried at first when I found out my representative during the move, Jacquie Yarrell, was new to the company, but she was great and she was trained thoroughly and there was always other support available.

My only error was underestimating the moving company by keeping some items with me to bring to TX just in case they were late with my other things. Due to my mistake, I had 9 luggages with me at the airport, at $475..yikes! I was pleasantly surprised to see my things came only 3 days after I arrived in Austin, when I was expecting a couple of weeks. I received phone calls every day of the progress and was able to track it online. I recommend others to take as little as possible with you if you are taking the plane (I took the plane with my dog) and let the moving company take most of your things.

The packing posting and recommendations on this site helped me make an informed decision. Initially I almost picked one of the movers listed on the Black List because they seemed cheaper, but I'm glad I checked this site beforehand. Also, now I know most of the reputable movers don't contact you via web inquiries, but are listed in the yellow pages and are referred.

The moving process is scary and I'm glad there is a site like this to help people like me, who knows nothing about this industry and didn't want to be taken advantage of. I'm proud to say that I printed out all my questions, listed off this site, and was prepared during my research. Now the moving industry is not as difficult to comprehend for me... Thanks!

Sometimes being new to a company is bad, and other times not.. In the moving industry, the most important part of what a sales person's knowledge is estimating accuracy. If a person has that training and knowledge, usually the reason they move from one company to another is constraints and possibly controls that don't allow them to be competitive.

The other thing is you mentioned that your weight was 2040 lbs. Was your estimate based on the standard United 2100 lb minimum?

For future reference, now that you know about taking things with you, probably the things that you took on the plane rather than allow United to move for you probably would have cost less than the charge for the extra baggage.

When you are given a delivery spread by a reputable van line, I would say that you can depend on that. Then you can decide what you need at the new location while waiting, and what can be done without during the few days you're waiting.
