Joyce Van Lines
Joyce Van Lines - John Adams came out to give an estimate. He was very pleasant, etc. Movers showed up late, took two days to pack and move us (scheduled for one day), and in addition, charged us an additional $600 and wouldn't take ANYTHING off the truck until the balance was paid in FULL. John Adams said he's try to get us a $200 rebate, that never happened. Very unfair practice. DON'T USE JOYCE VAN LINES!
Re: Joyce Van Lines
I see that you've posted here before. Was this an in-state move? Where? Why did the price increase by $600?
Re: Joyce Van Lines
I posted before the move asking if anyone had heard anything about Joyce Van Lines.
I moved from New Haven, CT to New Haven, CT. The additional monies were because it took longer than expected to complete the move.

Re: Joyce Van Lines
Thanks. Why did John offer to try to get you a rebate?
Re: Joyce Van Lines
How many hours did they go over what was estimated??
Re: Joyce Van Lines
Well, they were supposed to finish in one day and it took until 5:00PM of the following day.

Re: Joyce Van Lines
How many pound did he estimate when he did the in-home estimate? How many hours did he estimate? How many men did he say would come? How many showed up? How long did it actually take?

I'm not sure about CT, but some states (Calif for one) do not permit rebates.
There can be a credit of hours charged, that will reduce the amount of the move, ut it has to be done that way. Movers aren't like car dealers, so can't offer to $200 back for your move as a cash rebate.

Re: Joyce Van Lines
Your move was local; as such you are billed by the hour. The fact they took one day is not enough information - the fact it took 2 days may not be an "unfair practice" based on the information provided. Was your written quote for a set number of hours or were quoted an hourly rate? The rest of the information farrah is asking is needed as well.
Re: Joyce Van Lines
The move was not based on pounds, therefore pounds were never discussed. The move was to take 1 day, specific hours were not discussed. He said 4-5 men would arrive and 5 men arrived. They began day 1 about 9:30AM and stopped about 7:00P. On day 2, two men arrived and began about 10:00AM and finished about 5:00P. My husband and I actually helped move the boxes, etc off the truck into the new place to help move things along. I don't believe the quote was for a set number of hours, rather it was for 1 day.
Re: Joyce Van Lines
In essence, they charged $600 more than expected and it took them about 16.5 hours total to pack, load, transport, and unload your goods. Other than the Sales Rep telling you that the move should take one day (mid-to large locals NEVER take one day), I don't see anything that could be classified as an unfair practice up to this point? I suspect the reason for his offer was to partially compensate you for the move taking longer than he expected it would be done; I would have liked to see that come from his pocket and not the mover's pocket - the rep messed up.
How much damage (if any) was there??

Re: Joyce Van Lines
This may open a can of worms, but John Adams came on this website previously and posted this about another move:
Somebody could contact him to get his version of events. I tend to agree with Jim that it seems as if nothing was done wrong legally but John's oral assurances misled the customer. If he did offer to try to get a rebate or credit of $200 for the customer, that would indicate to me that he felt that he had made a mistake.
