Awesome Move - Chipman/United/Planes - CA to OH

Postby yos14 » Tue Nov 07, 2006 3:42 pm

Well, we moved in July and it's now November! WOW how time flies!!!
I just wanted to give an update on the move from Huntington Beach, CA to just north of Cincinnati, OH.

We couldn't decide if we should use Schick/Allied or Chipman/United. We chose Chipman Relocations/United in Santa Ana, CA who partnered with Planes Moving & Storage/United in West Chester OH on delivery.

It couldn't have been better. :D

The husband and wife drive team arrived on time as scheduled with friendly, experienced help and they took the time to load everything properly. We had a 4bedroom ranch and they still were able to be on the road by afternoon. We took off driving cross country with the valuables and pets that same day.

We arrived in Ohio 4 days later on Friday and Chipman/United arrived on Saturday! They had already dropped a load in Illinois and were unloading us the next day - Sunday morning! At no extra charge!!

There were no hidden charges, no overtime, no storage, no shuttle fees, just the original bill as estimated. They didn't charge extra to assemble/disassemble anything or extra packing (glass tops, etc). They carted everything we wanted upstairs which was pretty much all the boxes - ugh! The weight came in very close - I think we went over 9500 by 100-200 pounds.

As for damages - we have a claim for 4 items - totalling less than $500. I think that's pretty darn good. Not one item in the 250 boxes we packed was broken.

I will add though that boxes we purchased at box stores (especially Uhau!) did NOT stand up as well as those we got from the petstore or grocery.

Overall I'd certainly recommend Chipman/United/Planes and the team of Cindy & Ron Kapellusch and their crews. I stressed for nothing!

Great report and I'm adding it to our Superlist linked to below. For those interested in the runup to your move, here is the thread - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8985

You were moved by the 2005 United Van Lines Van Operator of the year. Ron and Cindy are outstanding. They have been with Planes for a while!!

Thanks so much for clarifying that the drivers were with Planes rather than with Chipman. I assumed that they were with Chipman because the move was booked by Chipman. I'll make the change in the Superlist to give Planes proper credit (I already gave it credit as a destination agent, but this is better).

:thumbsup::thumbsup: to Chipman and Planes!

Good to hear a positive report about a driving team from Planes, because they have gotten so much bad reports from agents within the Mayflower/United system lately.

And I'll copy your comment and fax it to Chipman Santa Ana on Monday.

We just recently relocated from Columbus, Ohio to Fresno CA, We are VERY Dissatisfied with Planes, and United Van. They under estimated the weight of our move, And when we added a few new items, we faxed the sales man this and he assumed that the load would be less. The only contact we got from our "relocation specialist" was when the movers arrived to load the truck, when I went to ask a question she hung up on me. We only took enough with us to get us through until we recieved our personal belongings. So as we were driving across country we recieved ean email to advise us that our belongings would take another week to arrive. When our items did arrive we had several peices of funiture damaged, this was not the normal scratches. Litterally pieces broken off. Communication with this company is poor to say the least. The crew at the Fresno home advised me that they do not carry things to basements or attics, They alos just dropped boxes off wherever they could. not asking which room it belonged. Needless to say Planes doesn't care about their customers.

I'm also surprised that Chipman didn't haul their own booking Diane.. That's unusual....

I would expect that since the hauling fleet is based in Benicia/Fairfield there may not have been a van in position to load it, and they placed it into open tonnage so as not to have a G-11 (agent pick up)

that they do not carry things to basements or attics,

Crews will not put things in attics nor crawl spaces. I actually had a shipper expect me to put his appliances in the basement of his new home, problem....no stairs and yes he complained.

just dropped boxes off wherever they could. not asking which room it belonged

Were the boxes marked as to contents and which room they were going to because if they were there should have been no problem? If it is marked kitchen it doesn't go in the master bedroom. There is nothing more agravating for the crew to unload a large shipment with no direction from the shipper, especially if you have to run around trying to find the shipper.

If you are doing a move, either by a mover of yourself, label the cartons on at least 2 sides as to contents and room. Also someone who knows the layout of the destination should be standing at the entry directing. Put a piece of paper on the door diagraming the location of the furniture in that room.

I had spoke with the relocation specialist and she contacted the crew lead here in Fresno ( which by the way was not onsite) And was told the crew is to unload into basements ( this is not a crawl space). the boxes were marked as to the location. Our sales person & relocation specialist were useless. Never gave us any instruction as to what to expect out of then as a company. I would never recommend them to anyone. Poor service , poor customer service, poor communuication with customers. They SUCK!!!!!

Please note that the comments are general.
1) Movers will not put things into attics or crawl spaces.
2) When boxes are labelled properly this should not occur. (The crew shouldn't have to ask where they belong if it is in writing).

Can I ask then why you selected this mover? They had to give you some indiciation as to who they were, how a move is suppose to work and so on?

If everything your saying is correct and honest then they "Planes" truely dropped the ball in customer service, sales, and operations. I also posted a response in a "report a scam" section.

Tim, you might want to add a section for Bad Moving Experiences thus giving the customer a choice of a "scam" or a bad move. Of course a bad move can go in the open community to.

But to the customer, as of right now I do not think you were scammed at all. You experienced poor "everything" as I stated above.

Whatever you do, do not give up on the fight in regards to filing a claim. You should be dealing with your booking agent and not your destination agent in regards to the claim. Their big beef will be that their inventory shows it was checked off as arriving. So the issue becomes who did your inventory at destination and why? And if they did the inventory and you signed it at the end, why did you sign it? Of course most customers responses are "the driver rushed us to sign" or "we took his word that everything arrived". The customer takes no responsibility as they should and as is described in "the rights and responsibilities".

So I am saying these will be their defense points. Be prepared.

Best of luck
