Review: V. Santini for a move from NYC to San Francisco

Postby terryisnow » Mon Jan 22, 2007 12:48 am

Hi,

I just wanted to add my review for a move I recently did from NYC to
San Francisco with V. Santini of Mt. Vernon New York. I moved in
December of 2006 and overall the move was ok. They broke a couple of
things (one of the finials off one of my bed posts, the hangers for a
mirror which hung off the back of a door) but nothing too major and
everything arrived promptly. The driver Shawn Gantt was very
professional and available by cell when coordinating the arrival of my
household goods. The only thing I didn't like was that the estimator Al
Carter didn't warn me that a shuttle would probably be required on the
San Francisco end (this is afterall San Francisco and there are hills here).
So the bottom line was that I ended having to pay more than what the
quoted not to exceed price was that they gave me.

What did they charge you? Was it per pound? Do you know the per pound price? How long did it take for your stuff to arrive? And how were they able to justify the not-to-exceed price when they exceeded it? How much was the shuttle van?

Terry,

If you see this, how much did your shipment cost and for how many pounds? Was the driver (Shawn) a driver for Atlas Van Lines?

I am not too surprised that the shuttle was omitted from the estimate. First of all, many sales reps intentionally exclude the shuttle cost to keep the overall quote low, and second, people in NYC may not be familiar with the terrain in San Francisco. But yes, the rep should have at least listed a possible shuttle cost as a broken-out item on the estimate.

Thanks for your review and I'll add it to my Superlist linked to below.

The total cost of the move ended being $5,358.08 for about 3600lbs. (based on the estimate, unfortuneately I can't seem to find a final weight anywhere in the paperwork I have). The 'Valuation Option' lists 0.60 per lbs if that helps any.

The 'APP' quoted price was $4990.88 to be revised down depending on how much packing I actually got done. So the final price of $5,358.08 is actually the additional shuttle minus the savings from doing some of my own packing.

My stuff was picked up in NY on Dec 9th and arrived December 23rd.

Not sure if the driver drove directly for Atlas.

Hope this helps.

And to justify the additional shuttle (and why it was missing from the not-to-exceed quote I was given) Lou Vargas of V. Santini basically argued that there's no way they could have known that I would move to a part of San Francisco where they couldn't get in with the main truck.
