Anyone familiar with this Company

Postby alboogie7 » Thu May 31, 2007 8:48 am

I received a quotes from many different companies and have narrowed it down to this company. The Carrier is Allied Van Lines, INC P.O. Box 4403, Chicago IL, 60680 and the Orig Agent is Reliable Van & Storage Co. 550 Division Street, Elisabeth, NY 7201 (908) 352-9083. They are an Agent for Allied Van Lines.

Im moving from Pomona, NY 10970 to Santa Clara California. So far their pricing has been reasonable but for some reason I cant find this company on this site. The consultant was very proffesional (though only had 1 year of experience) and seem to know what he was talking about. Im moving a 1 bedroom apartment. Does anyone have any feedback or info on this company? Im considering on moving forward with them but want to be sure they are recommened by this trusting site.

Many thank for your feedback!!

This exact agent, no, I don't know anything about them, maybe someone who does will post. But Allied Van Lines is a 100 year old firm, and is one of the top van lines in the business, and will do you a professional job, don't worry.

Looks like they're based in NJ, so we have reviews for that branch:

--Reliable Van & Storage (Allied) in Elizabeth.
CAUTION: there is a scam company called Reliable Moving based in NYC that has copied Allied's orange trucks and tries to confuse people:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 2255#52255
The Reliable Van company in Elizabeth seems to be respected by industry professionals, and it has very good to excellent quality scores from the van line. It is large, with 80-100 trucks. It reportedly focuses on international moves, being well located near the airport and port.
One person ("pacerfan577") gave Reliable Van a bad review for what was probably a local move, but the move was in 2003 and I think the report should probably be disregarded:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 3592#23592 (local)
"elletrod" reported in 12/06 that an estimator for the company, Christian Ohm, was unprofessional, failing to show up for a scheduled appointment and then evading her phone calls and lying about it:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10735
However, "KSG" posted in 3/07 that Christian Ohm arrived on time to give an estimate and was "very professional":

How funny is that this this is the same guy who came to my place....Chris Oehm. Although he was late, he did call and advised he was going to be late. To me wasnt a problem. He was very proffesional. So, do you feel I am in good hands to go forward with them?

I think Reliable is OK. Make sure you have a TPG or Total Guaranteed Price quote with GRR (Guaranteed Rate Reduction). The GRR means that your cost will go down if the weight is less than the estimate. Those letters or words should be on your quote.

Regarding the estimator, there are usually two sides to every moving story. Some customers can be difficult to deal with. I'll add your positive remarks about him to the Superlist to give balance.

OK, I come to find out for small moves, Reliable Van & Storage ouf of Jersey will be using a company called Berger Transfer & Storage out in New Jersey for my move. Is anyone familiar with them?

Im getting quite concerned now because this wasnt revealed to me before.

Please let me know if anyone has heard of this company and if they are good to go!
many, many thanks!

Boogie....it's not that big a deal....Berger is a fellow Allied agent, there are hundreds of them across the country. One may book you job, another may haul it, another may store it at destination if needed...thats the way it works...no single agent can do it all, they rely on a network of fellow agents in different cities, and the parent company, in this case Allied Van Lines, has overall responsibility......relax,

Here's what we have on Berger in NJ:

--Berger Transfer (Allied) in Ramsey.
BE CAUTIOUS about using this company. Although Berger is a very large Allied agent and has a good reputation nationally, this particular location has had quality scores in the "needs improvement" category:
http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 9933#49933
As of 9/06 the score had moved up, but only to 4.15 out of 5 ("meets standards").
However, we have a good review of Berger NJ by "guest-mark" for a move to CA. He talks about his estimator being Howard and his packers being Darius and Jose. This should help identify the branch of Berger that Mark used:

If Berger was an Atlas agent, they would be a top quality award winner as their rating of 4.15 exceeds the Atlas top quality standard of 4.1.

I'm not sure that the two rating systems are comparable, Weem.

To the OP - I agree that this is kind of disconcerting but Ramsey is obviously much closer to you than Elizabeth. I think it's probably OK to go with Berger. But, how did you happen to be negotiating with Reliable in the first place? Did you contact the van line to ask for a quote?

If you want to get another quote, you could call University Van Lines in Rahway to see whether they would be interested in booking the shipment. We know that they are a good performer (see reviews by clicking on the link above).
