Alert - AVOID Remington Moving and Storage

Postby nfayazma » Fri Jul 06, 2007 11:24 am

We hired Remington to move from a one bedroom apartment in San Francisco to Fresno, California. Overall, we were dissatisfied with Remington's service: their quote was inaccurate, the movers showed up two hours late, and they had not bothered to look up driving directions.

Remington's quote of $800 to $900 included two hours of loading time, 45 minutes to unload, and six to seven hours for the 190 mile drive from SF to Fresno and back. But, instead of arriving between 9 and 10 am as scheduled, the movers showed up at 11:50 am. After the movers had seen the apartment, I asked them if the total cost would be in line with their quote; I was assured that it would be. However, the movers took longer than they said they would. At the end of the day, we were handed a bill for $1,141, which included three hours of loading time, one hour to unload, and nine hours round trip for a drive that normally takes three hours each way.

We went with Remington because their quote of $800 to $900 was several hundred dollars less than their competitors. However, Remington pulled a bait and switch, billing us for $1,141, around one-third higher than their quote. To add insult to injury, when we called Remington to discuss the situation, they never called us back.

So that crew that worked into the night, in order to get you moved, despite being late, and only missed the price by a small amount, should be excommunicated? Wow, tough crowd. Arriving 2 hours late is not bait and switch. When airlines are late, is that bait and switch? Does your town have traffic? If you had enough stuff for a crew to take 2-3 hours to load and drive and an hour to unload and drive back, what you paid is not that bad. Lighten up some.

Archie, play nice.

Do you know why it took 9 hours for drive time? Was it a day that had especially bad traffic? I've made that drive and I know it sucks. :) I don't really think that you were ripped off, per se. Being late is just one thing you have to accept with movers. I agree it was extremely poor customer service that they didn't call you back to talk about the situation.

If you feel the need, you can complain to the California PUC:

Definitely complain to the PUC because they performed an illegal move.

Per the CA tariff, ANY move over 100 miles must be based upon weight, not hours. That's probably why they were so much cheaper than your other quotes.

If you have all the paperwork, they can be fined for doing an hourly move on 190 miles distance.

Is this the Remington based in L.A.?

Nancy, thanks for that information.

It appears to be this company here:
REMINGTON MOVING AND STORAGE LLC
1172 MURPHY AVE SUITE 210
SAN JOSE, CA 95131
(408) 451-9811 / (866) 645-7359

Maybe they have offices in numerous locations?

Looks like they have an unsatisfactory record with the BBB also. That's never good.

Oh wait, they're located in LA also:

Thanks Farrah! The one in L.A. is developing a bit of a reputation let's say, so I wasn't sure if they had more than one location.

If the customer has a Bill of Lading showing the addresses and all charges on the move, the PUC can take some enforcement action against them.

It says on the LA BBB that they have moved from LA and are now located in the SF area.

Funny that the BBB says they moved, and their website still has them in L.A.

I checked the CMSA listing, but they are no longer members.

Even worse, the CPUC has them in San Jose.

LA is a great big freeway, put a hundred down and buy a car, in a week, maybe two, they'll make you star......weeks turn into years, thats what they say....do you know the way to San Jose, I'm going there to find, peace of mind.

Yes, Darlin ( may I call you darlin?) long before you were born sung by Dione Warwick, written by Burt Baccarach, from 1968, a very good year.
