I scanned this website two weeks ago before I moved, to help narrow down the list of companies I needed to call. I tried looking at citysearch and yelp but neither one seemed helpful. So I googled something about "best movers in LA" and somehow ended up on this site.
Some background: I just needed a moving company to move my furniture from one apartment to the other in LA, two miles apart or so. I packed and transported everything else myself in my car.
I decided to call Delancey Street based on the number of positive reviews here and the lack of negative reviews on BBB. However when I called, I learned that they were fully booked for several weeks. My fault; I was kind of doing this last minute (about a week/week and a half lead time).
So then I called Andy's Transfer based on the same criteria. I scheduled an in-home estimate with Jim Smith on a Monday. He came to both my old apartment and my new apartment (not a problem for me, as I was going back and forth anyway); he was extremely pleasant and professional -- he even complimented my new place! He also gave me a handy moving guide with tips for moving and packing and some NorthAmerican post-its.
Estimate done, we scheduled a move with three guys and a truck for the following Monday.
Moving day:
The movers arrived fifteen minutes early. Not a big deal to me, since I was all ready to go. However, they did show up with four guys instead of the agreed upon three. I didn't say anything, because I just wanted to get started and I figured four would be faster than three; so I'm not sure what would have happened if I'd raised the issue.
The guys were very fast and efficient. They shrink wrapped all my things (including the two beds they needed to take apart first) and carted them to the elevator and then made several trips from the elevator, thru the underground garage, and up to the curb where the truck was parked. My complex is a nightmare to get in and out of, so their trek was significantly longer, but they didn't complain.
At the new house, again they were very quick and very respectful of my roommate's things which had already been moved in. Particularly, because we had to go through her bedroom to take a small table of mine out to the balcony, and they were very cautious of carrying it through her room, didn't bump a thing.
After they left, I did notice that the top of my headboard was scratched a little bit, but I just slapped some White-Out on it, and it's fine. As my mom and I said (we've been through absolutely nightmare moves before), if that's the only thing that got damaged and it was minor, we can live with it.
In the end, with four guys, they got everything done in four hours, two hours less than the original estimate. Even with paying for the extra man, they came in $120 dollars less than originally estimated. They were friendly, appreciative of the water and Cokes I offered, extremely fast without being sloppy. They are not cheap, and the leader readily admitted that, but I feel that every cent paid was worth it, because it went so smoothly. My mom and I went out to lunch afterwards and I couldn't stop saying how great it had gone. Moving can turn ugly so fast and I was amazed that I wasn't in a bad mood afterwards!
All in all, I 100% recommend Andy's Transfer and Storage in LA. I definitely plan on using them again if I ever move. My movers were: Pablo (leader), Mario, Copreano, and Andy H.
**Andy's Transfer in Los Angeles -- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Re: Andy's Transfer in Los Angeles -- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Thanks so much for this great review, which I'll add to the Superlist linked to below my name. It's refreshing to hear from someone who isn't focused only on price.
Incidentally, when I searched on "best movers in LA" (with no quotation marks) on Google, I came up with a very strange list - http://losangeles.citysearch.com/bestof/winners/mover
I'm glad you didn't pick a mover off of THAT one!

Re: Andy's Transfer in Los Angeles -- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
After also searching this site, we decided to use Andy's Transfer & Storage for our move from Los Angeles to Seattle in Sept 08 and I highly recommend them.
It was a very quick move- we only had 2 weeks to get up here and they were very accommodating. I called them and they were able to get Jim Smith to the apartment within two days to put together a quote for a large one bedroom apartment. We went with a guarantee price since we didn't want any surprises. After the estimate, I noticed a few items left off the inventory and contacted Jim. He added them to the list without charging anything extra. We also got quotes from Jensen and Graebel. Graebel was the most expensive and it took us a good 5 days to receive the quote after the onsite review. Jensen was about $600 cheaper but they listed a low quantity of cartons compared to Andy's. We didn't want any surprises so we went with Andy's.
Amanda Flagg was very helpful with questions, getting the paperwork together, and scheduling their team.
Two very nice gentleman showed up ontime to pack boxes. They were very fast and did a great packing job- we didn't have a single item broken.
Two days later, a crew of about 3-4 men came to load everything on the truck. They were nice, fast, and very hard workers. It took them about 4 hours to pack up everything.
They arrived 4 days later in Seattle (way ahead of schedule) and were very fast unloading- they were actually running! They did a great job reassembling things that had to be broken down for shipment.
There were no damages, nothing broken, no delays, and no hidden fees.
Nothing but the best review from me!
I'm sure I could have found another company to do it cheaper but I would rather pay a little more for great service and a stress-free move.
