AAA Movers in Paterson, NJ - SCAM!!!!

AAA Movers - SCAM!!!!

Dont use this company. I got a quote for $595. Extremely proximate move of apartments (not too much stuff). I even told them I had stairs and there was a walkway (which $300 was later tacked on for).

The movers did OK, but as they were moving (they arrived 2 hours late), one of them rushed me through paperwork to sign without explaining it and I never recieved copies of the paperwork. I was already all packed up with my wn materials and thought I would be all set. i also had extra boxes, bubblewrap and packing tape, all unused.

So the movers used $140 blankets they reuse on every customer, wrap my furniture like mummies with $4 rolls of tape (various half used rolls of tape discarded everywhere). They used a $250 carton (a cardboard box to move a $200 dining room table). my girlfriend asked them to take the CPU printer and they put it in a bigger box, which costs $20. Somehow an extra 2 hours of driving time was tacked on.

They broke an overhead light and tried to hide it also.

So they pulled the typical stop work with my stuff and held me hostage for $2100. I just paid 2 months rent so my account was spent. i had to go to the bank and move money around a bunch of accounts to get my stuff.

But I am powerless because I signed the paperwork although it is very unfair. I have planned the move for months based on this moving company. I had to vacate my apartment and be in my new one. I had no choice, the movers were late, adding to the urgency. They never gave me copies of the PW either which I dont think is legal.

Can you tell us which AAA Movers you're referring to and where you moved to/from?

AAA Movers in Paterson, NJ. Number is 888-828-MOVE (6683)

I moved from Voorhees NJ, and my girlfriend from Deptford, NJ... To Deptford, NJ.

Voorhees to Deptford 7 miles, about 1 1/2 miles between 2nd stop & destination.
(but they charged me an extra 2 hours of travel time).

People can contact the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs at 973-504-6442 to check on companies' licensing and complaint history for intrastate moves (within NJ). Here is a FAQ sheet that it has put out -
http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/pmovers/movfaq2.htm
The NJ Warehousemen and Movers Association at 732-341-3934 may also be able to offer some insight about quality.

If anyone has a complaint about an intrastate (within NJ) move and has gotten no resolution from the mover, contact the investigator for the Regulated Business Section (Vincent Buonanno) at 973-504-6442. If he does not answer, leave him a message and he will call you back. If you want to file an online complaint, you can do so by clicking on the following link and downloading the complaint form - http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/ocp/moverscmplt.pdf

This company has an "unsatisfactory" BBB rating, with 34 complaints since August 2006 - http://trenton.e-asp.net/NIS4/bbbreport ... 0025000532

I split off this complaint as a separate topic and added a warning about the company to the Superlist under "New Jersey."

well the entire key is the signing.

They arrived very late. I got nervous as this move has been planned for a long time based on this moving company, I have been packing for almost a week.... everything was ready to go. I took the day off of work.... But no movers, yet. Kept calling the 'company', and not much satisfaction.

Finally they showed up to my relief... and they came in and began to move things out, and the 'leader' rushed me through paperwork... telling me to sign the bottom of a variety of papers. I asked what they were and he didnt really explain things at all. I didnt have any choice but to sign. I had to vacate my apartment that day and move into the new one. I didnt know packing materials would be necessary as I packed myself.

I was not given a copy of any of the paperwork... it was not on carbon paper. I only got a reciept at the end itemizing all of the robbery.

So I dont know if the 'contract signing' was illegal.

no, they never gave their names at all.

they werent horrible guys. I think they felt a little guilty about the whole thing. I treated them well, moved a lot of items in my own vehicles, bought them doughnuts, water, pizza, soda, etc...

I dont know how big the company is. It was obvious that 2, probably 3 of the movers were just guys looking to earn a paycheck (who I feel bad for because I didnt tip). The 1 mover might have been involved in the scam high up, and at the very least he orchastrates the scam from ground level.

If you have to sue them, use the Passiac county sheriff to have them served the papers. It costs 30 dollars, but money well spent.

On May 9th., 2007 I meet with a Estimator for AAA Mover Inc. When he came to my home he was escorted around all rooms and levels of the home to review the contents of the home and that they would need to have tools on the truck to access an opening on the second floor to get the queen size mattress out. At this time 90% of the home was packed, since I was only residing there on a temporary basis till there was a sale of another property of mine. I bring this up because I would feel it is much easier to estimate an already packed home verses a home that is not. Additionally, approximately 80% of the content of the home was on the first floor or stored in the basement.

I was given an estimate for $490. which was to include the travel time, 3 men at $70.00 Per hour. Also a confirmation of the estimate with it now being called a "Quote" (there is a difference) via email to me.

The day of the move they did not show up till 11:30 and since I had to be moved out that day I started the move without them. I unloaded into the driveway almost all the boxes from the basement and first floor and second and third, leaving behind the ones that where too heavy for me to move by myself. All in all only a hand full were still in the house and the furniture. I was faced with a papers to sign pertaining to the time they started and insurance and who knows what since I did not get copies. I had no other recourse on getting another mover at the last minute and just had to get the stuff out since the Landlord had just sold the property and closed on it that very same morning, I was paying rent at the new home and had to get my daughter in the new school by Monday and with all my belonging in the driveway and I have two dogs. Living on the street was not an option. So under duress I signed the papers.

I was told that they took so long because of the travel time and it took them 3 hours to get to me. I was floored since I thought they had a local facility. Two of the men removed the contents and loaded the boxes while the other man blanket wrapped the furniture. They did not bring any tools and that became a problem with getting the mattresses out and was an inconvience. The tools I supplied them I never got back.

We get to my Shrewsbury location and I and handed a bill they wanted paid for $ $1,291.49 before the items were taken off the truck and the amount was more than doubled than what was quoted! Additionally, I had to sign a bunch more papers and pay up or they where taking my stuff and putting it into storage and auctioning it if I would not pay it. At first I thought of giving them a check and then would cancle payment but they would not accept a check only cash, certified check or money order or credit card. But if I used a credit card I had to also sign a waiver that I would not “charge back” the amount. So being under duress again I then decided to call the police and make a report of the situation and have it logged that I was paying and signing the papers but unwillingly.

Some of the cost adding to the inflation was $300 dollars was added on for packing materials that were not needed or even used on my job. For example packing paper and bubble wrap and boxes. I found about 15 pieces of paper used and 2 ft. of bubble wrap. They claim they used 26 boxes and that is a lie and impossible. But the boxes they did use and where misused for example my daughters stuffed animals where in a laundry basket and they put them in a $75.00 box! I could have purchased new ones for that amount of money. Also they put card board on a piece of furniture that only needed a blanket, that too was $75.00. These supplies were not needed! They also claimed they used 22 rolls of tape. Was this a like it was a ticker tape parade? It was to wrap the blankets around 7 pieces of furniture. I was preoccupied and not aware that they where doing this and I would have certainly stopped them from spending my money so frivolously if I knew it was happening and at what cost. But much of these charge are not valid. Also, the travel time $300. And poor estimation of moving time.

I am sueing them and working with the Procecutrs office regarding these guys with charges of false advertising, extortion, third degree robery, coersive monoploy, profiteering, price gouging, theft by deception. I hope the other poster who have been ripped off will contact me.
By the way there are other posters on other sights complaining about them as well with the same deciptive practices. www.complaints.com and www.moving.urb.com
My experience with AAA Moves Inc. in Paterson NJ is much like the other posters. If the other posters see this please respond since I have brought leagel matters against them.

I'm sort of surprised the DA would pursue the case. Most of the charges cited in your complaint aren't going to be successful because (1) the price at $70/hour for 3 men is too cheap for a professional mover; discovery will prove that out (2) there would be no way the document on a local move would be a "quote" the way you understand it unless the words, "binding" was also on the quote. If the word binding isn't there - it becomes non-binding and subject to increases, and (3) if the mover can prove the travel time plus the hours worked were the number of hours billed, you can't prevail on most of the charges above.

I personally would love the DA to try to pursue criminal fraud for the labor provided and the boxes/materials not used - though I don't know if it would work for the latter. If you were promised professional movers, and they got people off the street, people off the street are not professional movers. There would be some nice jail time for criminal fraud..... if it works. No refund for yourself, but I'm certain the feeling of watching this moron go to jail would be priceless.

The absolute worst moving experience of my Life, easily. How does this company stay in business!!!! Two very, very weak movers arrived hours and I mean hours late, took nine hours to move a small studio apartment into my condominium which was less than a 2 miles away!!!!
When the moved was booked they claimed there would be no charge for travel time, however once the truck was loaded and driven to it’s destination the movers would not unload until paid in full by estimating how long it would take to unload PLUS TRAVEL TIME back to their shop. Once the estimated time was up they left they majority of the boxes on my lawn and drove away. I moved more of load into my condominium then the ACTUAL movers. In addition, on top of the per hour cost, and the hidden travel time cost, there was an additional HIDDEN FEE of $125.00 per flight of stairs!!! Stay clear of this horrible company.
