Move from CA to NC (anybody used Fix Price Move)

Postby shrin2000 » Wed Apr 09, 2008 8:24 pm

I am planning a small move about a studio worth of stuff from CA, Menlo Park to NC, Raleigh.

The best quote I got was from Fix Price Move, about 800$. I was wondering if anybody had used Fix Price Move and how their experience was.

This company has only been doing moves since 2006 and their license has already been revoked once for over 4 months:

That is a VERY small amount of money for a move. You barely can rent a UHaul for that amount. That should be your red flag.

If you choose a company off the superlist which has been confirmed by prior visitors to this website, that work will already be done for you. Use the following link.

Take the DOT or MC licensing information (DOT# 1360938; MC # 521469) from their front page and insert it at the Federal Motor Carrier’s Safety Administration’s Protect Your Move website at http://www.protectyourmove.gov. Click on the link for “Most Recent Insurance Data” , hit the HTML button on the right, then scroll down and click on Authority History at the bottom of the page. Note that they only have two straight trucks licensed to handle interstate moves and don't currently have brokerage authority. Both issues make their price very suspicious.

Use this resource to check out any carrier you’re considering.

You can hardly drive across the country in a Honda Accord for $800.

That is a good price for a large corporation using ABF freight for a dock to dock LTL shipment.

In my opinion, for a shipment that small going that far, a Van Line or ABF upack will be your best option.

Thats a great name for a moving company, 'fixed price'....to me, it signifies their desire to fix the price....if its too low to start with, they will fix it later, after they have your stuff on the truck. They would probably partner with 'Raise your price later' Van lines, a new outfit.

Northstar, based in L.A. wouldn't be providing the tranportation since they don't have interstate operating authority. They are the west coast booking agent for a smaller independant carrier by the name of Moishe's (USDOT # 587098; MC #237817) based in New Jersey. Both companies have a fairly good local reputation in their respective markets. http://ai.volpe.dot.gov/hhg/SearchDetai ... D%26search

It appears the estimates that your receiving aren't based on a visual survey and are relatively cheap compared to the prices charged by most national van lines. Northstar's quote may reflect the fact the Moishe plans to use your linehaul revenue to offset the expenses of the trip back to the east coast. It may take awhile, though, since they don't have a large fleet.

This is what I wrote about NorthStar Moving (the company in Chatsworth, CA) in 2005 and I stand by it - http://www.movingscam.com/forum/viewtop ... 7694#37694
It is not a scammer but people have reported lowball estimates, add-ons, and sloppy paperwork in the area of interstate moves. I think it is OK for local and intra-CA moves.

As of 4/08 it has 12 BBB complaints over the past 36 months, on the high side.
