My husband and I are moving from Quincy, MA to Greenville, NC during the last week of July 2010. I have been lurking around this site for the past few months, reading the comments on MovingScam.com discussion boards as part of my online research. We shortlisted four companies (Massachusetts based) for an in-house estimate. The companies are Marathon, Wakefield, Humboldt, and Rainbow. We are also trying to contact Joyce Van Lines from neighboring Connecticut to see if they would be willing to do an in-house estimate for a Massachusetts to North Carolina move. This site has been very helpful to us, and I would like to share our experiences and give detailed feedback on each of the companies as we talk to them. Also, who we eventually go with and why. And finally our moving experience.
I began by putting together a list of questions (and general information) that we are asking/gathering on each company. Below is the list. I will post more information on each company as they complete their in-house estimates.
1. Full company name and any DBA names (doing business as)
2. How long they have been in business?
3. How many average moves per year?
4. Company address
5. Phone numbers (local and toll-free)
6. Information on License and Insurance: DOT and MC license numbers
7. Company web site address
8. Email address
9. References
10. Do we get a ‘rights and responsibilities’ booklet/online electronic file (pdf)?
11. A GNTE (Guaranteed Not To Exceed) quote – a binding not-to-exceed estimate for an interstate move based on weight
12. Moving estimate with partial pack (chinaware, ceramics) and without partial pack
13. Are they offering any discounts?
14. Will this be a self-haul move?
15. When are we expected to make the payment? In what form?
16. How would they protect walls and flooring during moving – out of our current place and into our new home?
17. Could they help us assess how our goods will be handled and protected during the move. The range of their insurance policies, precautions they take during the move, and types of packing materials.
18. What is their claims procedure in case anything gets damaged?
19. How long will the move take? When do they start and when do they arrive at new place?
20. Moving tips or suggestions for packing?
