Thinking of using The Moving Company in Jessup, Maryland.

Postby theabooboo » Tue Oct 11, 2005 8:34 pm

I have an estimate from The Moving Company, located in Jessup, Maryland. I am moving from Hyattsville, MD to Bowie, MD. A friend recommended them to me. Has anyone had any experience with them? I searched the name in the postings and found nothing. I looked at Beltway and JK but their estimates were higher (and JK is not reviewed so favorably in Washington Consumers Checkbook) so I had considered The Moving Company. Then, I read about scam companies that are clustered in Jessup and I worry if The Moving Company could possibly be one of them. Please advise. Thank you!

The Moving Company (DOT#934058) isn't a good bet. There are a number of red flags showing on their DOT record. First, as you noted, they're located in a hotbed of scam movers, Jessup, Maryland. They've had their DOT operating authority revoked twice in the last three years. Their driver out of service record is a whopping 53.3% compared with the national average of 6.78%. Their vehicle out of service record is 30.8%. They've also had numerous insurance policy cancellations, which often indicates business instability. I'd look for another company.

Ditto what C.A. said. Plus they've had 13 complaints at the BBB, 8 of them in the last year.

As for that Washington Mover's Checkbook, the article is from 1997. I wouldn't take much stock in the numbers compared to business today.

And I can add a more recent "NEGATIVE" to this company. Unfortunately I did my research after I got raked over the coals. I could give details, but just let me say "STAY AWAY!!!" I reported them to the BBB and they have not responded.. I guess they are used to getting these complaints. I cannot stress enough to stay away from this company.

I have since looked up the BBB report and now (2/20/2007), they are again members of the BBB. Possibly, I am not doing something correctly? My husband and I are getting ready to move from Columbia, MD to Boulder, CO and were strongly considering The Moving Company in Jessup. Anyone with recent experience? Or should I just avoid them altogether?

There are lots of other more reputable companies you can go with:

Pick a local company and make sure they come to do an IN-HOME estimate for you.
