Good experience with Hawkeye North American in Iowa

Postby TheCat » Thu Dec 29, 2005 12:06 am

Just wanted to report that we had another good experience with Hawkeye North American in Iowa City, IA. They moved us here from Chicago 3 years ago and the university paid the bill and it went OK, though we did have to camp out in our house one night. This time, it was a local move in Iowa City - we bought our first house (no more rent!!!). The quote was non-binding, which bothered us a bit based on recommendations from this site, but everything else looked OK and none of the quotes we got were binding. Their weight estimate was the most detailed and was within 10% of the other two quotes, and they did a reasonable job in our previous move, so we went with them.

Two days before the move, they billed our credit card 110% of the quote, for $1550 (they told us they would do this). We packed and unpacked our own boxes and wrapped one heirloom table in bubblewrap. We also moved our art, plants and cats in a car the day before. A team of four guys arrived 15 minutes early the morning of Decmeber 21, loaded and moved our stuff. Since it was a local move, they didn't number-tag everything, which scared me a bit, since we didn't have a full inventory. Anyway, they drove straight to the new house from the old one, unloaded, and the only thing that broke was a bottle of basalmic vinegar. One week later, as far as we can tell, nothing is missing. The final bill was $1050, so they reimbursed our credit card for the $500 overpayment, which was quite a nice surprise.

Thanks so much for posting this. I also noted the praise of Hawkeye by Ruges (NAVL driver) and Rick on another thread and I will definitely remember this company for future reference.

No problem. Thanks for this site - it was a big help in selecting a mover when so many other things were new for us first-time home buyers.

Happy New Year everyone.
