Any experience?

Postby urao » Tue May 23, 2006 4:51 pm

I have quotes from two companies:
Apollo Moving and Storage
and
McCollisters

Apollo's quote is at least $400 less than
McCollisters but I am not able to find any
information about this company. Has anybody had
any experience with Apollo? The gentleman who
came to give us an estimate seemed very honest,
straightforward and full of good advice.
He is giving a 60% discount for moving the week
of June 1st. McCollisters' does not show discount
information. It is important for me to get this out
the door by end of next week. Apollo mentioned
the pickup window will include Saturday.
McCollisters is promising pickup before next
Friday. McCollisters has a delivery date 7-18 days
from pickup. Apollo's estimate does not have
dates (left blank) :(. Thanks in advance.

I did a search by that exact name in the DOT, and found a company in NJ. Is this it?

http://www.safersys.org/query.asp?searc ... AME&query_
string=553377&original_query_string=APOLLO%20MOVING%20AND%20STORAGE%20INC

The weird thing is that they are licensed to move both household goods and passengers. Is this a way for customers to save on plane tickets?

They appear OK to me, only 2 complaints. They have some issues with the upkeep of their trucks, so keep an eye out for that.

Thanks MusicMom.

Yes, that is the company.
Where do you find these complaints?
Anyway, that is not so bad. McCollisters'
agent has not called yet, Apollo has called
twice. Feels like McCollisters is taking more
than they can handle.
The decision time is today, now.
McCollister's agent mentioned they cover
the floors so it is clean and not get damaged.
They stick color coded bar codes on all goods
and you can track your shipment online.
Will let all know when it is done.

Those are BBB complaints, and no, that's not bad at all.

urao,

I think you will be OK with either company. Apollo and McCollister's are actually both discussed in the summary post on "New Jersey" accessible via the link below my signature. Your sense that McCollister's was a little overextended is something that others have said too. On the other hand, it is more likely to self-haul your goods and thus have a shorter delivery time. Whatever you decided, please come back and report.

Hi all,

So, McCollisters proved true to their reputation, at least
until now. Megan was our agent and she went out of the way
to supply us with boxes. A couple did the moving and other
than one big scratch in our computer table, everything else
reached intact. I signed the papers the truck driver had and
paid him in cash. This was last June.

Last week, I got a notice from the "COD Collection Analyst"
stating that "we have found an outstanding balance of $292.68".
I called Megan last Wednesday, but no return calls till now, this
Monday. Will let you know when it all pans out.

If you can't get a hold of Megan (or even if you can, since it's gone this far), type and sign a letter to the collection agent stating:

"I formally dispute the charges which you are attempting to collect. At the time of my move's completion, I had paid the driver, an employee of McCollister's, cash in full according to the Bill Of Lading they provided me. No further contact has been made by McCollister's to collect any additional debt owed by me."

It is then upon McCollister's to prove they are owed the money, and why, and that they attempted to collect it from you before resorting to a collections agent.

Keep this letter, should other collection agencies contact you for the same overdue monies. Usually multiple collection agents will try to get the same account settled for one company. If you notice anything bad on your credit report, submit this letter to the one (or all three) agencies reporting it. The three agencies are Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian.

Also, good info for anyone to know, everyone in the country is entitled to one free copy of your credit report per year. Good idea to check each year, especially if you've had bill disputes, or dealt with a scammer.

Just a quick update that you can order one free credit report from each bureau (Experian, TransUnion and Equifax - One free report from each per year) at www.annualcreditreport.com

There are other sites that claim you're getting a free report, but make you sign up for something, so be sure to use the above website.

Do not use the site freecreditreport.com

Nothing free there.

and if the person can give me the order number of the one alleging a balance due, I might be able to check on line and see what was audited...

Can't guarantee that I can, unless my agency was a participant.

Hi all,

I promised to update this, so here it is. I left a message with Megan
and she called me a couple of days later stating it is a mistake and
will be corrected. All in all, I am very satisfied with McCollisters and
would recommend them to anybody moving out of New Jersey.
See if you can ask for Megan specifically. Thanks to movingscam.com
for all the information I collected here. You are doing a great job,
a great help for us families in transition.
